As Zarmina scurried away, the men took a more studied aim at those they had already shot, finishing off Shukria with bullets to her stomach and heart. Then the attackers seemed to succumb to the frenzy they had begun, forsaking the motorbike and fleeing on foot in a panic, two bobbing heads - one tucked into a helmet, the other swaddled by a handkerchief - vanishing amid the earthen colour of the concealing wheat.
Six girls were shot here on the sunny afternoon last month; two of them died.

The girls are not the only targets; their mothers are under attack as well.

This is almost too sickening to even finish reading. Is this the future of parts of Europe and, then, in the US and Canada? I have a travel book written about Afghanistan that was published int the late 1950's. Although the rural areas were probably very 'traditonal,' the city of Kabul seemed to be influenced by practices outside the country. There are pictures of school girls, in modern skirt/blouse uniforms and a photo of young college women, in modern dress. There are pictures of modern looking dairies and bakeries. In a couple of hospital photos, a male doctor is at the head of a classroom, teaching female student nurses, who are wearing traditional nursing caps, white uniforms and not burqas. In another photo, several female nurses are standing by the bedside of a male patient. What happened to make it into the nightmare that it is today? I have read that the long-serving king of the country had the last Christian Church burned in Kabul in 1973. Maybe he was starting to take Saudi oil money, and it's insidious conditions, before he ran away to Italy. The story of the fate of these little girls should be on the front page of every major media outlet, but, of course, it won't because we must know the details of Paris Hilton's jail experiences and Mr. and Mrs. Beckam's new Hollywood mansion.

A couple of years ago, there was an award winning film called "OSAMA". This film eloquently depicts the horrors of daily encounters with the Taliban. This was the first feature film made in post Taliban era of Afghanistan using non-professional actors and actresses
To find the main character, a young girl, the director/Writer/editor, Siddiq Barmak looked in schools , orphanages, among street children and refugee camps. Many of the actors came from the refugee camps, but Siddiq found the main character, Marina Golbahari, on the street.
Highly recommended viewing. IMO, Suitable for educational purposes from adolescent ages on up.

I agree that the film, Osama, is a haunting and must see movie. It's not just appropriate to describe life under the Taliban but throughout Muslim dominated countries.

It is awful to think that in Afghanistan, we might well be seeing the future of the West. Think about it: 55 or 60 centuries of learning with the biggest strides being made in the last 250 years or so, crumbling to dust at the hands of these bloodthirsty medieval savages sometime between 2080 and 2200, just like those dusty books in the 1960 film "The Time Machine". That's how the mad mullahs view creativity and learning. It makes you sick. And that happening here in Western Europe, the USA and Australia, not just in some backward wasteland like Afghanistan.
This is the stuff nightmares are made of. And it can become frighteningly real, because we have a total dunce in the White House who wouldn't name the enemy, name that enemy's aims and ambitions, or set out what losing would mean. Instead, he described the wicked cult they follow as 'a religion of peace' and surrounded himself with apologists like Esposito et al, in sharp contrast to John Quincy Adams 200 years ago, who named the enemy, described it in graphic detail, its ways, its deceit, its inhumanity and parasitism - everything that would have had millions of Muslims today foaming at the mouth had the Pope or some other leading world figure dared to quote him. And posterity will also remember us in this harsh manner, for the way lawyers and all manner of human rights activists stopped us from destroying the enemy - how they made out panties on head to be just as bad as severing the head, and thought the human rights of terrorists were more important than those of its victims - intended and real. We know how civilizations die - they become too soft, too nice, too decadent to defeat a foe that is determined to kill and subjugate them and will do anything to achieve that aim. Islam gave women the right to own property, to marry and divorce - rights that western women only achieved less than one hundred years ago - blah blah blah. And among those "rights" that Muslims brag about, is supposedly the Allah-given right for a Muslim woman to be educated. Here is an example of how that comes up:

Re. the grand claims of the spin-masters, that Islam stopped female infanticide. Not such a big deal.
As I understand it, long before the time of Jesus (1st century AD) infanticide was simply NOT DONE by Jews. Infanticide of girl children, such as was commonly practised even by noble and wealthy pagan Greco-Roman families, was unheard of among Jewish communities. And the Gentile Christians in general inherited and continued this Jewish respect for human life, forbidding all infanticide. Pagan Greco-Romans killed a significant proportion of their daughters; Christians loved and raised their daughters, all of them, leading over time to some interesting demographic results.
So Islam cannot claim that 'stopping female infanticide' was some sort of wonderful innovation that nobody had ever heard of before. For CENTURIES before Mohammed was born, Jews and Christians across the Mediterranean basin from Spain to Persia had been taking it for granted that all babies - boys OR girls - were to be welcomed and reared. Islam wasn't innovating at all - it was playing catch-up.
In any case: what Islam does to girls after they're born, in most of the lands of Islam, is hardly better than killing them outright. Denying them education; denying them proper medical care; failing to eliminate FGM; veiling them so they get Vit D deficiency; polygamy; forced early marriage leading to death in childbirth; beatings; honour killings.
