UK officials drop loony plan to have Muslim panels vet intelligence on Islamic jihad groups before raids

Could a sense of reality be setting in?

An update to this story. "Plans dropped for Muslim panels to vet intelligence," from the Daily Mail (thanks to Twostellas):

Plans for panels of Muslim community leaders to scrutinise intelligence in advance of anti-terror raids have been shelved, it was revealed today.

The idea - put forward by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair last September - has been effectively dropped following "protracted" negotiations with other forces and the security services.

The move was designed to avoid repeating the damage done to community relations by the botched raid in Forest Gate, east London, last summer.

However, it sparked fears that the success of crucial operations could be jeopardised and informants may be discouraged from coming forward.

Under the original proposals, around four prominent figures from communities were to be allowed to assess intelligence in advance. They would have been security vetted, but not made to sign the Official Secrets Act.

Will there now be a negative response from the Muslim front groups?

It's about time Britain wised up.
It seems the foiled jihadist plots were a wake-up call.

StillBreathing: “Will there now be a negative response from the Muslim front groups?"

Since the new official UK line is that terror and Islam/Muslim have nothing to do with one another, there would be no grounds for singling out Muslim community leaders to vet intelligence on future anti-terror raids (of course I thought there is no WOT now either). If any Muslims complain about this, that would constitute an admission that Islam/terrorism do have something to do with eachother. Can't have it both ways.

Finally! Some things need to be private and classified. This is obviously one of them.

Seems it didnt help with the jihadist doctors.

Sir Ian Blair in one of the biggest disasters ever inflicted on the British Police Force.
If the Conservatives regain power they will probably fire him.

Perhaps we will soon end hearing how "we need the help of t he muslim community to stop the jihad" next.

Caroline, good thinking! Hard to be mindful of the implications that result from the different fictions, whether the irrelevance of Islam in relation to terror, or the reliability of Muslims in the fight against aggressive jihad.

Caroline points out the irony of this whole global war with jihad. It has nothing to do with Islam but we must not isolate Muslims and force them into jihad. If it has nothing to do with Islam, why are we so worried about the feelings of the Muslim communities and the Muslim world?

If it has nothing to do with Islam or Muslims, then thankfully we won't be hearing any more about Muslim grievances either!

....it would have been like advising Rommels field commanders where and when you planned to attack in the desert.....

They intended to select local professional people, such as doctors, and there would have been very rigorous checks on the panels???????
We have been very lucky that this time the terror cell was even more incompetent than the politicians, and the security services.

Coincidence???

According to HotAir : "Glasgow jihadis were tipped about police pursuit"

No sense of reality is setting in.....the mere fact that they even considered and debated about this is a horrible sign....but a predictable sign unfortunately.

Ha, ha! Firstly, it is hard to work out what the Conservatives' policies are so how can anyone decide to vote for them?

Secondly, from what I have surmised, the Conservatives are more committed to multiculturalism and appeasement than New Labour, so they are unlikely to get rid of a dhimmi police chief.

Watling,

David Cameron has said a Conservative Government would

- launch an inquiry into the state of the Police
- Repeal the Human Rights Act thus making it easier to deport those involved in terrorism. i.e. put the duty to protect the public ahead of the rights of the terrorist
- Ban the organisation Hizb ut Tahrir

Peace in our time deferred)

It may not be much but it’s a start.

I have it on good authority, people I have spoken to in the Conservative Party, that there is disquiet, even at MP level, over the performance of Sir Ian Blair.

One wonders how the politically correct/multiculti experiments known as "affirmative action" and Muslim panels projects affected cases like this

LOST FILM WRECKS RACE BEATING CASE
Published: 1st August 2002

THREE Oldham teenagers have been cleared of attempted murder because police lost video footage which might have been vital in their defence.

Judge Simon Fawcus stayed the indictment against them on the grounds of abuse of process, saying: “I reach this conclusion with some regret. It is plain on what I have heard this was one of several serious racially motivated attacks carried out at Oldham this period where white youths were deliberately targeted.”

The judge discharged the youths – two 16 and the other 17 – who were all legally aided and cannot be named because of their age. They denied attempting to murder Mark Clayton, who was stabbed on 27 January last year in a sub-way in Manchester Street in Oldham town centre.

Mr Clayton was on his way to work as a pub disc jockey when he was savagely attacked by a large group of young Asians. The attack was racially motivated “with robbery as an ancillary motive”. The victim thought he might be able to recognise some of them again.

The three defendants were arrested after they were identified by another young man. They denied involvement. Less than a fortnight after the attack, the victim was taken to the Spindles Shopping Centre where many Asian youths often gathered.
In the control room, he watched monitors linked to security cameras and identified a man as an assailant. That man was arrested but had an alibi which if correct, meant Mr Clayton was mistaken.

Without the video footage, no one could say how clear faces were on the “important” one at the shopping centre. In addition the paper management system might have provided leads the defence lawyers could have followed up had also been lost.

“I have come to the conclusion the combination of problems – identification and the loss of the videos, particularly that of the shopping centre – make it a real possibility these defendants cannot have fair trial,” said the judge.

Later a senior crown lawyer said police were “very embarrassed” by the loss of the videos and paperwork. There was an office re-structuring in the middle of last year. An exhibits officer put the videos and paperwork in a box when she was on maternity leave. On her return the box and the contents had disappeared. All efforts to trace them had failed.

Inquiring minds want to know.
