Only the bomber was injured. "Islamist attempts suicide attack in Morocco," from Reuters:
RABAT (Reuters) - A suspected radical Islamist tried to blow up himself near a bus carrying tourists in the Moroccan city of Meknes on Monday but he detonated the gas cylinder he was carrying before reaching it, police sources said.
"The gas cylinder exploded some metres (yards) from the bus and badly injured the attacker," said one police source.
Another source said authorities suspected the bomber was a member of the radical Islamist Jihadia group.
Police sources said the failed suicide attack came after anti-terrorism police stepped up a crackdown on radical Islamists in the past six months, arresting scores of suspected jihadists.
"That crackdown move put terrorists on the defensive and destabilised their plots and forced them to commit acts of despair like this one," a third source added.
Of course, it's hard to tell despair from optimism when suicide attacks are standard procedure.
[...]
In June, Morocco raised its security alert to the [maximum] level, suggesting an attack was imminent.
The gas cylinder exploded some metres (yards) from the bus and badly injured the attacker.
Maybe he will live a few weeks in pain.
Maybe he will live a few weeks in pain.
Hopefully
Nothing to see here.. everybody just move along... oh, and don't forget to purchase your tickets to some vacation paradise in the Middle East..
..anything but would be RACIST.
""That crackdown move put terrorists on the defensive and destabilised their plots and forced them to commit acts of despair like this one," a third source added."
....with or without a crackdown, the Muslims will continue to attack....they have said so....the world must unite in the fight against Muslim terrorists...This may involve the use of spies, bribes, executions, trials, seeking out and destroying the Islamic infrastructures, disrupting the Muslim lines of communication, the feeding of false information to Muslim leaders, locating and removing weapons from Muslim hands, the cutting off of all monies going to Muslims, the freezing of all know bank accounts affiliated with Muslim terrorist groups, the elimination of Muslim charity groups found supporting Muslim terrorist groups, the banning of Muslim student visas, a severe cutback in allowing Muslim travel visas, increased satellite surveillance of Muslim terrorist training camps and of any travel to and from know areas of Muslim conflict, increased surveillance of all mosques in Western lands, increased surveillance of all Muslim clerics and their know associates, closer inspection of all shipping cargoes originating from Muslim lands, the application of profiling at all transportation hubs, bus, trains, and airports, a closer surveillance of Muslim support groups such as CAIR, the banning of the Qur'an from public libraries and public schools, the discontinuance of granting special considerations for Muslim religious practices from all schools, places of employment, places of public consumer attendance, all transportation hubs, and from anywhere that Christian religious practices are forbidden, there can be no double standards....above all, the immigration policies must be changed, Muslim immigration must be banned...
Westerners visit, or live in Morocco, for three main reasons.
The first is simply to enjoy the usual club-mediterranee delights of sand and sea, and if the prices are lower than elsewhere, despite the constantly haggling and attempts to cheat you -- in the souk, in the taxi-tete, on the street, everywhere (but this is par for the Arab course, so that some become inured to the hideousness of it all).
The second are those French retirees who see Morocco as the place to go, a place that will be relatively safe -- in other words, a place akin to Costa Rica for American retirees. It is not out of place to note that the desire to leave France by these retirees is in part due to the expense and growing unpleasantness of life, which, in turn, is partly a consequence of by the growing presence of unreconstructed Muslims in France, and among them, of the very Moroccan Muslims among whom those retirees will now settle. Even a "cultural Muslim" such as the travel writer Shah (son of the Sufi writer Idries Shah), who has squeezed every bit of paid prose he can in the English press for his house-renoviation in Morocco, must surely be having second thoughts.
The third are the Weswtern film crews. When you need an Arab locale, Morocco is the place for you, or perhaps -- Morocco is the place that was once for you, but should not be any longer, given the expense of insuring film stars and protecting the representatives of the "decadent" Western film industry. And then, overnight, a crew can be booted out if an Arab leader decides to intervene.
Decades ago, the movie about Mohammad (script by Harry Craig, financing by assorted rich Arabs) started to be filmed in Morocco, when a phone call arrived from a Saudi prince to the King of Morocco, and overnight that entire film production company had to leave -- to go, I recall, to Libya where Khaddafy, always willing to buck the Saudis whom he cannot stand, allowed the movie to be made.
The myth persists that Moroccco is safe. But in August 1994 there were coordinated attacks on foreigners (and Moroccan Jews) and again, a series of five attacks in May 2003 (with the same targets), and there have been intermittent attacks, including those on luxury hotels.
How crazy does one have to be, given such circumstances, to endure constant worry in order to see the souk, where one is being constantly cheated, or colors not more impressive than those of a thousand other places. The world is large; the Arab world is not the place for Infidels to travel to, or settle in, certainly not in the conditions of complete political and mental and moral disarray that the world of Islam, dimly aware of its own failures but unable to attribute those failures to anything but the Infidel, a view that meshes perfectly with, and indeed naturally is prompted by, the worldview that Islam inculcates, in which there must be unremitting hostility toward non-Muslims, and recognition that a permanent state of war (if not of open warfare, or qitaal) exists between Believers and Infidels.
French retirees can choose other places -- can even choose to stay in France. Movies can be made elsewhere. Tourists, rushing hither and yon, should not take a maghbrebian vacation in which, every minute, they must worry about whether or not they will be the specific targets of attack themelves, or merely present when a major tourist site is attacked on the theory that whoever is there -- at Luxor, in Egypt, where more than 60 Swiss tourists were murdered, or at Djerba, in "safe" Tunisia, or of course all over Algeria, where Westerners simply should not go, period.
" Luxor, in Egypt, where more than 60 Swiss tourists were murdered, or at Djerba, in "safe" Tunisia, or of course all over Algeria, where Westerners simply should not go, period. "
This incident has an American incident connection,(I have noted a couple of paragraphs from an old report)...The connection is the first attempt to destroy the Twin Towers in New York....It gives proof that the "Blind Sheik" was indeed associated with Islamic terrorists..
"Egypt's biggest Islamic militant group said Tuesday it had carried out the Luxor attack in which nearly 60 tourists killed in an attempt to free its leader from a U.S. prison. Al-Gama'a al-Islamiya (Islamic Group) said in a statement received by Reuters that it had planned to take hostage as many tourists as possible to force the release of its leader, blind cleric Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, from a U.S. jail.
The Gama'a said the aim was to win freedom for its leader, blind cleric Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, convicted in 1995 in the United States for conspiring to blow up the United Nations building and other New York City landmarks....
...An Interior Ministry statement said 31 Swiss, eight Japanese, five Germans, four Britons, one Colombian, one French and one Bulgarian national were among the dead. Seven foreigners had not been identified, it added. Four Egyptians, including two policemen, were also killed.
Swiss officials in Berne put the Swiss death toll at 35, with five unaccounted for. Britain has confirmed six Britons killed. Germany says it believes four Germans died. Japan has said 10 Japanese were killed, including seven honeymooners.
Monday, an Egyptian tour company employee said he saw a leaflet signed by a brigade of the Gama'a saying "No to tourists in Egypt" beside the body of a Japanese vacationer."
...........The Muslims have indicated they do not want tourists (Most Muslims in Muslim countries probably concur), just look at how Non Muslim tourists are treated...I agree....Non Muslims should avoid Muslim countries....
I can see it now...
"Hey ali! Watch me martyr myself against these infidels and apostates! Oh, hold on...hmmm, now what does this button do? I pressed it and nothing happened...ok, I'll try again by releas..." ***BOOOOOOM!!!!***
***noise sounds like it's coming through a straw for a moment***
(ali, dumbfounded at his friends stupidity, slithers away into the crowd of onlookers who are stunned at this idiots stupidity)
"...another one bites they dust, HEY! HEY!..."
LOL
...how smart must you be to become a suicide bomber for a worthless cause...
.....duhhhh,.....
...I can see the hands flying inside the local mosque...."PICK ME, PICK ME, PICK ME!!!"
LOL exsgtbrown...
I don't know what made me think of this...when you mentioned that, a SouthPark episode came to mind.
Mr Garrison: "Now who would like to stick Cartman with this cattle prod?"
Entire class, hands raised: "ME!ME!ME!ME!ME!ME!ME!ME!"
You're a walking mnemonic device!...LOL
Europeans keep going to these places.
Turkey, subsidized by the German government, with cheap flights and cheap hotels, Egypt most of all, where wily pretty boyz are trained to (physically) screw middle aged western females our of everything they have ( yes they go there because of lonelyness, because of romance and the charm of those Arabs who are so comforting, so multi-lingual and attentive) and Tunesia, where it seems so exotic that one tends to forget everything.
I went to Malta instead. Yes I had planned to go to Morocco this year after what, 30? 35? years, but no. Perhaps I will never go again. Why risk it?

"Europeans keep going to these places"
....before they leave home, I hope the travel agencies have them sign a release form, stating that if they are kidnapped by Muslim terrorists, no attempt will be made by their government or the travel agency to rescue them or to buy their release.....in other words, if the Muslims take you prisoner, you are on your own....
...and if the Muslims kill you, well, just blame yourself....
Assalamau Laikum all,
Please don't listen too much to exsgtbrown...he is too biased.
There are many countries in the muslims world that are safe and good countries to invest in.
Dubai, Bharain, UAE, Libya, the Saud, Indonesia....and yes even parts of Pak are fine too.
Obviously, Iraq, Afghanistan and a couple of others like Palestine, Lebonan and Israel to be avoided.
Good news.
Another jihadi closer to death.
"There are many countries in the muslims world that are safe and good countries to invest in. "

....certainly not safe to live in, especially if you are a Non Muslim....In Lahore, Pakistan, even Naseem could not guarrantee your safety...
...it is best you stay home and guard your children and educate them in the ways of the Muslims, taking time to teach them the words of the Qur'an and how , through out history, these words have been used by the killers of millions of Non Muslims.....these are still the words the Muslims use to justify todays Muslim attacks by the Muslims themselves....The Muslims do not deny this...
"There are many countries in the muslims world that are safe and good countries to invest in.

Invest? Maybe. Live? Not a chance. Visit? Dubai, perhaps....Not sure about Bharain...Libya? Not a chance. Saudi Arabia? HAHAHA! You must be kidding. Why would a non-muslim want to visit Saudi Arabia? I want to wear my cross necklace and bring my Bible.
Indonesia? Once. Bali is perhaps the most beautiful place on earth....the Hindus keep it beautiful and pristine, the muslims try to turn it into hell on earth. Wonder why that is?
Hugh
I am really disappointed by your entry. One should draw a line between being against Radical Islam and being merely a bigot, don't you think?
What about the brave bus driver? Without his quick reaction many tourists would have been killed or injured. (Hugh: Oh noo he was just scared for his life, he's a muslim after all,...never trust them!...they're all after killing infidels.!!!)
So because an unfortunate incident like this one, we should punish thousands of families whose life is tied to tourism?
How many tourists have been killed in Miami(just an example) by criminals? what is your suggestion? Boycotting this US destination?
Yes some Moroccan cities are notorious for their hassle, even more are India's tourism destinations, so? It has more to do with poverty and need than Islam. If you want hassle-free vacation you've just got to go to Paris or Palm Beach.
You won't be safe from terrorist attacks, whether you're in New York or Marrakech, terrorism has no border and no territory. The only way to defeat it it, is to cut it out from its roots, and we can't achieve this if we start alienating and marginalizing Muslim countries like Morocco and Turkey that struggle hard to embrace modernity and western enlightnment instead of islamic barbarism.
I'll just watch "Road To Morocco" and spend my tourist dollars in the U.S.
I trust an Islamic country about as far as I can throw the Ka'aba.
Hope and Crosby beat gas cannister and jihadi anyday.
the muslims try to turn it into hell on earth. Wonder why that is?
The Temptation of Jesus
1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread."
4Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'[a]"
5Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6"If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written:
" 'He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'[b]"
7Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'[c]"
8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9"All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me."
10Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'[d]"
11Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
***
Well, the Enemy has always desired the worship that God alone is entitled to, and has deceived 1 billion people to "bow down and worship me."
The people who are enslaved in islam have become the army of darkness.
", we should punish thousands of families whose life is tied to tourism?..."
....and just what are these people doing to stop the terrorists who threaten to take away any job or income they may get from tourism?......
...i suspect nothing....
Naseem sez:
There are many countries in the muslims world that are safe and good countries to invest in.
Yep...but what if you dont want to, or cant invest in these countrys, of what use are they then?
These countrys and others like them, are generating the jihadists, who at the present time, are afflicting the world. The best way to stop Islamic hegemony is to stop funding it. To stop investing in muslim countrys, to stop giving aid to muslim countrys, and find alternative sources to replace Arab/muslim oil. Yes the Chinese would keep buying it, at dirt cheap prices, but they would also switch to something cheaper, and better if it was available.
It is insane that we in the west are funding those who would destroy us.
Robert was right, in his interview with Malkin, that not enough American/western people are aware of the magnitude of the problems with Islam.
The uninformed, or partially informed are still into the 'religion of peace' propaganda, and the 'small number' of jihadists, just a few radicals, and other excuses.
And besides, it's Americas own fault because of abusive American policys for decades. The Joos are equally guilty, and get lots of finger pointing from the same people.
In other words, the uninformed, and partially informed, are 'stuck on stupid'. The job of those not stuck, is to unstick those that are.
One day soon the western masses will wake up and refused to get stoned. On that day, stupidity will vanish and enlightenment will occur...
exsgtbrown
What are you doing to stop rapists, murderers and thieves running the streets of your city?
...I suspect nothing...
therefore you're also a rapist/murderer/thief...
...good logic
...it is illogical to allow Muslim thugs rule your life and take away your freedoms and heritage...The average citizen can begin to fight back by voting against those who will not fight terrorists, the average citizen can educate his neighbors into the grand plans of Islam...the average citized can educate his neighbors on the Qur'an and all its evil writings. One can monitor the local mosque, documenting all vehicle tag numbers, photographing all who come and go, one could email their elected officials in DC with all issues discovered that clearly show Islamic attempts to force Islam on you or your countrymen, one could continue firearms training and begin to stockpile supplies for the time when Muslims begin to conduct drive by shooting and bombing attacks, one could get neighborhood watch programs going to monitor Muslim employees in stores and transportation hubs such as train stations, subways, bus stations, and airports, one could research all the old news stories to gather the names of Muslims who have been involved in terror attacks and to become familiar with these names, one could become familiar with all the different Terrorist group names and with who is involved with each group, on could track the activities of these individuals by the speeches they give and where they appear and with whom they associate with, one could get spies to infiltrate mosques and report back with what is being said in mosques, one could notify authorities with information uncovered, one could photograph suspicious Muslim looking characters acting suspiciously in bus terminals , train stations, and airports and keep a scrap book of the photographs documenting the date and time and location where the photographs were taken, one could study reports on Muslim attacks around the globe, noting the names of the attackers (the attackers often boast of committing the attacks), one could do much to prepare to defend the homeland from the Muslim hoards that are infiltrating , one could petition the politicians in DC to stop Muslim Immigration, to stop allowing special Muslim priviledges at universities and on job sites, one could locate remote crossing sites along the Canadian and Mexican borders and monitor such sites for people crossing illegally, one could do research on Muslim job applications and check out the references given, ....there are many things to do to combat Muslim infiltration
....you are wrong if you think I am doing nothing...sir....
"The only way to defeat it [Muslim terrorism], is to cut it out from its roots, and we can't achieve this if we start alienating and marginalizing Muslim countries like Morocco and Turkey that struggle hard to embrace modernity and western enlightnment instead of islamic barbarism."
-- from a posting above by "LeviToledano"
"Cut it out from its roots"? Which "roots"? Do you mean the phony "root" of poverty, or the real root of Qur'an, Hadith, and Sira -- that is, the immutable texts, and the tenets that are derived naturally from those texts, and the attitudes that flow naturally from those tenets, and those atmospherics that one breathes in, in societies suffused with Islam, even if one hardly ever steps inside a mosque and never attended a madrasa?
And why should Infidel tourists take risks with their own safety in order, as you so misleadingly put it (would you be in the tourist trade, by any chance? any connection to those who are, or who do business in Turkey or Morocco?), encourage those who "struggle hard to embrace modernity and western enlightnment." What percentage of the population in Morocco or Turkey is "strugglnig hard" to embrace "modernity and western enlightenment"? And why, if they are doing this, do they need Western tourists to encourage them? Surely the perception that the failures and backwardness of Muslim states, societies, and individuals, political, economic, and social, moral and intellectual, are due not to a failure of Infidels to supply still more money, beyond the tens of billions in the disguised Jizyah of foreign aid, and the ten trillion dollars in OPEC money for its Muslim members received since 1973 alone -- surely it is best to condemn the Muslim world to the solitary confinement of Dar al-Islam, and not to keep bailing out Muslims, "moderate" or otherwise, but to force them to confront the sources of their own disarray.
Infidels may still have to buy oil from Muslim oil-possessing states. But we can work to diminish Muslim oil revenues, and to force them to spend as much of it on living, in order to ensure that there is as little as possible left over to conduct campaigns of Da'wa in the West, and to buy arms that may actually work (selling them arms that have been cuningly sabotaged, so that they will self-destruct if used in a certain latitude and longitude -- well, that's another matter), and to rent armies of Western hirelings to Defend the Faith of Islam and the demands of Muslims and especially Muslim Arabs.
And we need not continue the disguised Jizyah of foreign aid. We need not buy -- I certainly wouldn't buy (and I boycott any manufacturer or store involved in the making and selling) clothes made in Jordan (where the Arab owners of clothing factories, hire and treat as virtual slaves non-Arab workers, as horrific stories in the American press have made clear).
Finally, why travel to countries where many people, not random criminals (as in Miami), deliberately may target you as an infidel, or still worse, as an American.
There is much to see in the world. There is much to see right in one's own country. Why give money to those who -- at least a great many of them -- are taught to dislike or hate you, and at least some of whom may go beyond wishing to ill to causing you ill?
Why?

....ABSOLUTELY!!.....
I hope this wannabe mass murderer will live with a serious physical disability for a long time.
Sir, (Hugh Fitzgerald)
-By "cut it out from its roots", I mean fighting, strangling, wiping out the Salafist, Wahhabist, fundamentalist scope of influence in the Muslim world and elsewhere.
By alienating and marginalizing the moderate and progressive forces in the muslim world, all you'll achieve is helping the salafists, jihadists to achieve their supremacist goal.
And believe me, once they get in power, it'll be much harder if not impossible to defeat them. Just imagine a Bin Laden inspired atomic-bomb-armed oil-rich caliphate strentching from Indonesia to Morocco. America and its weak ally Europe would never know peace in this scenario. And the best you'd achieve with China, India and Russia is guaranteeing their neutrality, so don't be deluded by the dream of the "world against Muslims".
Take a look at the cold war. Communism wasn't defeated by nuking Moscow and Havana, or by adopting fascistic isolationist stance against citizens from communist countries. The west gave moral and material support to the anti-communist forces in these countries, and the result was the destruction of communism from within in the early
90's. People just got fed off of this utopic and totalitarian ideology. The same with islamism, and any type of destructive ideology. You cannot defeat it with nukes and fascistic policies.
The same people who are subjected to the evil of its grip will someday rise up and overthrow it. All they need is support from the outside. America should stop being naive and deal with Jihadism as a communism-like ideology instead of mere marginal groups. It should help to the anti-islamist forces in the muslim world. It should give support to the moderate muslim governments instead of alienating them. It should adopt a hard-line posture against the main salafist sponsors as Arabia Saudi, while encouraging the spread of more moderate and spiritual Islam like Sufism and cultural Islam of North-Africa and south Asia. Instead of spending billions of dollars in weapons to arm Salafism sponsors like Arabia Saudia and Egypt. It should spend it in building schools and universities and spreading humanist and liberal values in the muslim world. An educated and elightened muslim world would be less prone to religious fundamentalism than a backward and ignorant one. Believe me, the far-right, paleo-conservative policies you suggest won't work, the world today is different from the one of the early decades of the 20th century. We're living in a globalized world and a destablized "outter" world will inescapably affect us.
-Whether I am in the tourism business or not has no relevance in this discussion (in case you came out with this idea noticing my jewish nickname). But just to feed your curiosity, I am a Moroccan Jew, whose family immigrated to France some decades ago, for economic reasons rather than political ones (as you may think). My grand parents' house is still there, and we still visit Morocco from time to time.
Most Moroccan Muslims treat us as Moroccans, since my mother and father was born in Morocco and speak fluent Darija (Moroccan Arabic), which is actually their native language. Intolerant Muslims? Yes there are many, but they are usually the "orientalized" ones, usually young people with beards and egyptian "Jillabas". The common, normal Moroccans care more about their daily needs than what happens in the middle-east. Everytime you describe Muslims as blood-thirsty beasts I think of the nice 80 year-old shop-keeper in the "Mellah" (which is now 99% muslim) who has only good memories of Jews, or the Berbers who share the same (Jewish) saint as Jews, and who you can see, once a year, side by side, with religious Moroccan Jews coming from far places as Tel Aviv, Paris or New York.
.
-Finally, whether you like it or not, westerners and other people will keep going to Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey, because they love these countries and their people, no matter hard you try to paint them as monsters and blood-thirsty animals.
I suggest to Robert Spencer whom by the way, I greatly respect, to take the example of Daniel Pipes and focus on radical Islam and Jihadism instead of bending over backwards with a far-right agendas.
