Izetbegobitch without a doubt tried to terrorize and intimidate voters in to giving him power in 1990 and cheat his way to the presidency, yet he still lost by several hundred thousand votes. I say "without a doubt" because Izetbegobitch, as evident by his 1970 "Islamic Delcaration" was a full blown jihadist and that's what jihadists do. It is my understanding, that being in Europe, isolated from the rest of the Islamic world when the Ottoman Empire began to decline, Balkan Islam evolved into a moderate and heavily Byzantine (Eastern Roman Empire)-influenced form of "Islam." The Ottoman Empire itself, once Constantinople fell in 1453, adopted many aspects of the Byzantine model to administer its empire. As the Ottomans retreated, Balkan Muslims were forced into coexistence with Christian Europeans. Perhaps Balkan "Islam" could have been the roadmap for a more modern Islam, but history crushed that possibility.
With the breakup of Yugoslavia, all hell broke loose, as we know. There is no doubt that the Serbs where involved in ethnic cleansing, but an as-yet not much explored historical involvement from the Muslim side could be the involvement of foreign jihadis, especially "Afghan Arabs," in fomenting discord in the region.
I hear that now in the rebuilding process, Saudi Arabia has been putting a lot of money into the Balkans, but with a proviso. Old historical mosques, built on a Byzantine plan, must be raised, regardless of the architectural value. New mosques are built, and the money for rebuilding of course comes with the caveat that Wahabbi Islam must be taught.
So what we may be seeing here is just the influence of Wahabbism taking hold amongst Balkan Muslims who had previously been forced to coexist with others and had developed a more sane and moderate form of Islam. Now the Saudis are making sure that sanity and moderation are purged from "Balkan Islam," which they no doubt view as a form of apostasy.
Saudi Arabia, on the Sunni side, and Iran, on the Shiite side, are the two most dangerous countries in the world. They are dangerous not just for the world but for Islam itself. It has always been the case with human history that the aggressor must find fault with the target of their rage in order to justify the most extreme inhuman depravity to rid the world of these persons! The truth is that it’s the aggressor that demonizes another party who is truly the aggressor to all the people of the Earth. The party that is used as the scapegoat is ultimately the non-aggressor and most often than not is more educated and prosperous than the aggressor that holds them in contempt.

When I was in Bosnia, there were a lot of mosques being built. The intel folks told me the Saudis were funding them. The first time I saw a burkha, not a hijab/niqab, but the "bee-keeper" outfit was in Bosnia and the man leading her looked middle eastern as all hell. Freespeach, - Bosnian Muslims are not only ethnic Slavs, they are in more than 90% cases Serbs who converted to Islam, - their mostly Serbian family names demonstrate this. This proves only one thing: that ethnicity is nothing , - the ideology, tradition in which we are raised is a decisive factor. In case of Bosnian Mohammedans it is Islam that gives the answer to the question why they solidarize with Turks, Saudis, Pakistanis, Palestinnians, Afgans , inspite of being of Serbian ethnic origin (and knowing it, most families know damn well when their ancesstors converted), speaking Serbian language (they have no other language, of course they call it "Bosnian" now, but this is 1:1 Serbian).

That is false.Balkan Islam didn't 'evolve'- and neither did any other due to the immutable nature of the Koran.
Islam was suppressed, just like in the SU, or like in China. Hardly any clerics came from the outside and life under communism brought some kind of equality on the surface, something that couldn't be maintained once the system collapsed.
I remember vividly the towns along the coast, but also inside the country, where you had Muslims on the one side and Christians on the other. The Muslims were the ones lurking in the dark, sitting in the coffee-houses smoking, and on the other side the Christian areas were brightly lit, cheerful and vibrant. The Muslims kept their women in the house and the Christians behaved like they normally do.

But still we could say that this is not that bad in a sence that it can go even worse in Bosnia. Their radicalism is just developing and evolving. And the fact that they are sorrounded by prosperous western christians, far away from their brothers in middle east will grow them into a true bestial jihad warriors. Meanwhile I beieve that the Golghota the Serbs are now going through is a just punishement for this foolish, extreemely foolish, tollerance that also included allowing other nations to rule over them ( given that the Communist leadership was mainly Croatian , including Tito who was half Croat, half Slovenian). I myself was also not born into views I hold now - I used to be Yugoslav oriented, tollerant and all that garbage. It took 15 years of suffering and irreparable losses to change my mind. Unfortunately, many Serbs are still infected with poisonous virus of tollerance (the irony is that they are depicted in the outside world in exactly the opposite manner).
Could be the realization, on the parth of both, that both "Kosovar" and "Palestinian" "nationalist movements" are nothing but post-colonial wrappers for the same Islamic jihad that's going on all over the world.
