Carter is "a true friend of American Muslims" -- his Palestinian propaganda piece did at least some Muslims a world of good. "AN INTERFAITH VIEW: Carter helps fashion Muslim-Baptist dialogue," by Lawrence Swaim for Southern California In Focus (thanks to WriterMom):
Immigrating to Boston from Britain in 1630, Roger Williams is generally regarded as the father of religious liberty in the United States. He advocated a "wall of separation" between religion and government.
He opposed forced conversion of Indians to Christianity.
He refused to take loyalty oaths. He called himself a "seeker" rather than a Christian.
He was probably the most controversial freethinker of his time.
And he was a Baptist.
That will come as a surprise to many people, who tend to think of today’s Baptists as the bedrock of the Religious Right. But many Baptists are returning to their roots.
Former President Carter, a Baptist who is a true friend of American Muslims, is helping independent denominations fashion a "North American Baptist Covenant" as a new evangelical presence.
And one of their first projects will be Muslim-Baptist dialogue.
"We need to repair the damage done by Baptists who made hurtful statements about Muslims in the past," Dr. A. Roy Medley, general secretary of the American Baptist Churches, told InFocus.
"If you believe in religious liberty, you must respect other religions. The best way to witness to your own faith is through humility and service," he said.
Good. What will Muslims do to repair the damage done by hurtful actions perpetrated by their coreligionists?
"What will Muslims do to repair the damage done by hurtful actions perpetrated by their coreligionists?"
Let's see...what will they do....got it...NOTHING!
The American Baptist Churches have always been in the liberal leftist camp. When (and if) the Southern Baptist Convention gets on board with such foolishness we should then be worried.
Carter is so clueless. If he claims to care about other religions, why would he write a book that can do no possible good, and actually help extend the misery and suffering of the Philistines by enabling their leaders with propaganda.
He's the epitome of liberalism: Great big ideas, great big hearts, not a single real solution to actually improve the world.
Respect other religions-yes.
Respect death loving cults-hell no!
Stop the presses....
Jimmy Carter is a Southern Baptist (but he denounced the Baptist church), not Independant or Fundamental, but Southern. Southern is fine, Southern is the most liberal of the Baptists.
So the article above is written with a broad pen, trying to represent ALL Baptists'.
Lets look and Jimmy. He was a Sunday school teacher for many years, but he has denounced almost every part of Christainity there is, and as far as Baptists' he has denounced every part and has even left the church. He called Baptists 'blind' and 'not up with the times'.
So, is he Baptist? Absolutely not, I am not sure he is a Christian. He sure does not have a walk like one.
The one comment above that is true is 'Carter is a true friend of muslims'. He sure is not a 'true friend' of Baptists.
I wonder, has Carter ever witnessed to a muslim and tried to get him 'Saved' or 'Born again'. I bet not. But he has no problem asking for Baptists to compromise.
Remember, that there have been several articles stating that Carter and Clinton would be bringing in new organizations into the Conservative Right that would decieve many, while at the same time delute the Conservative Base.
So what is Carters agenda? Pure deceipt and treason. A wolf in sheeps clothing. A great liar.
The writer quoted Dr. Medley of American Baptist Churches. It is up to the reader to understand that this a small group that does not represent Baptists as they claim, but represents a small mission organization. But if you read their web site you would think otherwise, claiming '1.5 billion Baptists'.
Either American Baptist is assisting in the lie or they are out for the Power grab. The only Baptists that are part of an organization is the Southern Baptists, that is why they are the most liberal. The rest are Independant or Fundamental and are no part of this attempt of deceipt. But I can see them moving on the Southern Baptist organization. If they can overtake their board and them vote in a new agenda the followers (in general) will follow. That in it's self is about 36 million in America.
A great investigative piece would be to see who the players are at American Baptist Churces, how they interface with Clinton, Carter and track the money.

I love in the complete article the quote 'when the word 'Baptist' is used it is often considered extremism'.
By who? Liberals or Politicians.
If you go to a third world country 9 out of 10 would not even know what the word was.
Now if you say 'Crusade' they know that word and that is a word of extremism in their eyes but that is the Catholic Church.
This should be viewed as a frontal assault of the Conservative Right by liberals and muslims.
"If you believe in religious liberty, you must respect other religions."
Oh yeah! Sorry, but I do not respect those who follow a religious cult whose foundation is the conversion, subjugation, or else murdering non-believers. I do not respect female mutilation, honor killing, killing those who leave Islam, and the veiling of women, just to name four repulsive aspects of Mohammedism.
Mr Carter can stick Mr Medley's statement where the sun doesn't shine.
I can be tolerant of many things without respecting them. I can not be tolerant of jihad, sharia, honor killings, female genital mutilation, etc.
"What will Muslims do to repair the damage done by hurtful actions perpetrated by their coreligionists?"
They'll riot and bomb some more.. They see damage in the fact that we have neither capitulated nor converted yet.
So naturally that is a damage they very much seek to repair.
Stupid craptist dhimmis
In Canada, there are two types of Baptist (I can't remember what terms we use to differentiate between them); one is more strict than the other (no dancing or drinking, no secular music).
Any Baptist I've known would say that anyone who isn't a certain type of Christian is going to hell.
Surely to goodness American Baptists will continue to have the right to believe what they believe?
What is this constant pressure to erode the idea that one's own faith is the superior faith? What's the point in having a religion if you don't believe that, ultimately, it is the one true faith?
And why, oh why, are we being told that it's okay for Muslims to believe they are right but that, as Christians, we must abandon our belief that we are right?
I totally respect everyone's right to believe or not believe in any religion. Everyone should be treated equally under the law with no consideration of religion (except for religious freedom). I treat everyone I meet with respect, good manners and decency.
But, ultimately, let's face it, I think any religion other than my own is incorrect.

Alaskan, I'm not getting your meaning at all. There are numerous Baptist conferences in the US, the Southern Baptists just being the largest. The oldest Baptist conference is the American Baptist Churches, which is also one of the most liberal (although I suspect some of the primarily black Baptist conferences may also lean liberal).
If you read the entire article, you'll see that the author says nothing positive about the Southern Baptists. It's kind of amusing when one considers that the Southern Baptists have two former Muslims in high leadership positions (Ergun Caner and Emir Caner). If you read the Caners' works on Islam, you will see that while they have a great heart for Muslims, they don't play the "Muslims and Christians pray to the same God" game. Instead, their writings tend to focus on teaching Christians how to witness to Muslims. Maybe that is part of the author's problem with Southern Baptists???
Peanut Khadr sold his soul to the Islamic Satan.
If he is not one of them he is most certainly their loyal bootlicker and a traitor to civilization.
Nobody is that dumb the way he pretends to be...
Respect satan worship, Jimmah?
Don't worry, he just wants to perform an encore to his wonderful dialogue with North Korea (which enabled them to build nuclear bombs), and all his previous stunts as a representative of left wing idiocy.
I was raised a Southern Baptist....but now call myself a seeker. My father (now gone) was raised in Atlanta Gerogia, always said that Carter made him feel ashamed for Georgia. My father was also a career Navy man who had several times visited Iran and Istanbul also said many times that we "should bomb the hell out of these countries and make Christians out of them". That was in the late 70's and I was apalled at the idea. Guess Daddy got it right. Oh yes..Daddy did not go to church
I'm not a Baptist of any type, but I grew up in the South and I can't think of one Southern Baptist worth his salt who would buy what Carter is selling. Pure rubbish. These incessant apologies for the imaginary crimes of Christians are nauseating; as though one might apologize for actions of the dead. And the idea that Roger Williams was religiously tolerant is laughable. I guess that all that is required of a journalist in this day and age is internet access and a knowledge of how to log onto Wikipedia. What a sad state of affairs.
