Iraq: British withdraw from Basra base, Mahdi Army moves in

The BBC didn't see fit to take note of the new occupants until the 9th paragraph of this story. "Troops withdraw from Basra base," from the BBC (thanks to John):

British forces have withdrawn from a base in Basra they shared with Iraqi police - the first step in a plan to move out all troops based in the city.

Another 500 troops will now pull back from Saddam Hussein's former palace, their only remaining base in the city....

Then follow many details, and finally Paragraph Nine:

The British military spokesman in Basra has dismissed reports that Shia militia men from the Mahdi Army took over the base after British forces passed control to Iraqi police last night.

Witnesses told the Associated Press the Mahdi Army emptied the building taking generators, computers, furniture and even cars.

Major Michael Shearer told the BBC News website that officers from the Multi-National Force spoke to the local Iraqi Army commander who "assured us that the PJCC is under his control and being efficiently run by the Iraqi Army. He also stated that all the equipment remains within the PJCC".

An MoD spokesman said there was a green Shia flag flying on the building, but not the black flag associated with the Mahdi Army....

It had to come to this.
Ignore the sucking sound you hear.
Just Jihadis filling the vacum.

let them have it.

It's been 4 years, and we've all been urging the Brits to let them have it. Finally, the Brits complied.

That's when you drop the MOABS.

Have a friend, an anglophile (we both are) who often boasted of how the Brits knew how to put down insurrections, like in Malaysia.

When I referred to Basra, he tried to change subject.

Guess the Brits just dont have a General Petraeus.

It is well to quote history - that the Tet Offensive failure by our enemies constituted a great victory for us in Vietnam. But idiots like Walter Cronkite and the lefties in the press told us otherwise,(like Hugh did then and does now). The Dems sold us on failure !

But we are winning, and we can win no matter what the lefties say.

"Guess the Brits just dont have a General Petraeus."

Lucky us...

If this is a fact, and the Iraqi army stood by and watched. I wonder where were the predator drones and other military hardware at that should have been deployed to watch this situation?

"Tet offensive...But idiots like Walter Cronkite and the lefties in the press told us otherwise,(like Hugh did then and does now).
-- from a posting by "dgene"

I "did then" -- that is, at the time of the Vietnam War --- did what? Commented on the Tet Offensive? Then? Where? And now -- where? Where have I written about the Tet Offensive? Tell me exactly what "Hugh did then and does now." I'll wait right here for you to present the evidence -- I preume in my comments on Iraq and what constitutes "victory" in Iraq (hint: it has nothing to do with short-term military victories by the American forces) that I am an "idiot." It better be good.

Our President is either in denial or is playing the blame game with his successor. Congress needs to act.

Hugh is brilliant, but I sure hope we’re able to buy a Halal or Haram board game by Christmas. Failure to act on that idea would be ‘questionable’.

The Brits did the right thing. Iraq is a freakin lost cause, Afghanistan is a lost cause. The mohammedans will cling to their Islam no matter what better alternative they are presented with. Let them have what they want, death and destruction, they are choosing it for themselves and their children.

Humble apologies Hugh.

You are far from being an "idiot" and that comment was not meant for yourself. In fact you have been a valued teacher, and for that one is grateful.

Again, sincerest apologies.

But as for counselling defeat, your view is that the Iraq war cannot be won, that we should leave now - which is exactly the counsel of the drive bys (the media) and the Dems was in Vietnam, and which is their view now. One extrapolated that since your view is in sinc with the Dems now (leave as soon as possible - it will really not be a defeat), it would have been so then (if you were available for awareness and comment then).

Saying that your view now is as their view then, and their view now. If you vary from this alignment, let us know the difference. What is it ?

good grief people! there is no such thing as a sovereign nation! there are only those nations we allow to exist! there are no problems, only our own.

get behind the 8 ball, GWB. step up to the plate! do the american thing! we are a free people! we wish to remain a free people! step off the islam BS and do the right thing!! you got my vote, now earn it!

I'm looking for at least two people in every state of the Union who would be willing to purchase a copy of Robert Spencer's Religion of Peace? Why Christianity Is and Islam Isn't and mail it, on an agreed upon date, to one of the senators in your state. I'm organizing an effort to get the book simultaneously to all 100 senators, in order to send a strong message. If we get more than two people per state, books can also be sent to the House of Representatives.

If you’d like to be involved, please write to me at traehnam@yahoo.com under the subject heading “Senate,” and tell me the state your senator represents, an email address where I can reach you, and a nickname. No need for your real name. And I will never share your email address with anyone, not even with other volunteers for this project.

And visit www.jihadawareness.blogspot.com to get more info on this project and to leave comments other volunteers can read. You can also see there the growing list of participants in this project, and the states their senators represent. I’ll try to update the list at least once a day. I've also designed a graphic that might amuse. Scroll down when you get to the site.

Once we have at least two people from every state, we can agree on a mailing date and then each of us can mail a copy of the book on that date.

Right before each of us mails the book, we can issue a press release to various media outlets in every state, and in that way announce and explain the mailing. And perhaps we can come up with some other ways of maximizing the effectiveness of this project and gaining as much positive attention as possible.

One of the project's volunteers suggested contacting Rep. Sue Myrick, who started the anti-Jihad caucus in Congress. I'll try to coordinate this project with Rep. Myrick to maximize its effectiveness. I've also been calling various congressional offices to get advice on how best to go about this. And I'll soon contact Regnery, Robert Spencer's publisher, to ask their advice and to see if we can coordinate with them in some way.

dgene -- Hugh has explained his position often, and it doesn't line up with either Dems or Republicans in any predictable way. One way to find out what Hugh thinks on this would be to try doing a google search of "Jihad Watch" together with "Iraq" and "Fitzgerald." Or you might click on the "By Hugh Fitzgerald" link at the very top of this website, to find all his articles and then look for one with a promising title.

When things get tough; the tough get going!

Where is the stamina that was the GB of the 40's?

Come on fellows, where are you? Afraid of nettles and sand fleas again? You f'n wimps! You have more of an Islamic fascist problem there in the UK than US. Get you asses up off the turf and do something in the sand! We may not be available again to bail you out if you can't show your own resolve!

God bless Lady Diana!

The Brits are not whimps by any stretch of the imagination. Please don't insult our allies. Non-Muslims need to hang together or we'll all hang you know how. Criticism is fine, but if we Americans go beyond criticism of European non-Muslims and start insulting them and calling them names, we create hostility among potential allies, and that can only help our common enemy: totalitarian Islam and jihad.

Guess the Brits don't like killing jihadis.

Shouldn't miss any opportunity you get to send them to Allah.

Preferably perforated.

Preaching Democracy to Iraqis at this stage of their extreme feudal stage of development is throwing pearls to the pigs.

That's what Iraqis call progress, the medieval Mahdi armi finally in power. Iraqis rejoice! You garbage feeders got finally what you wanted.

Oh yeah, must be why George Bush chickened out of
doing any fighting for good ol U.S.A & hid under a mountain when he heard about 9/11...
Anyone who believes they can win in Iraq or Afghanistan should put themselves where their mouth is-on the Frontline instead of being a cyber space 'Warrior'. Reckon all our loud mouthed, lying Politicians should be shipped out to DANGER ZONES instead of avoiding 'em as Bush & Blair have been so careful to do.
U.K have their soldiers dying & maimed because they are on a BUDGET whilst the bastards who sent them there wax fatter & richer-there are always those who get rich upon the spoils of War such as arms profiteers, politicians, black marketeers, people traffickers, sex traffickers...
Few will know this but Iraq even under the rule of brutal Saddam Hussein[kept in power by U.S &
Britain for decades] had no history of women & girls being sold off as sex slaves-now they are like
those in Kosovo to be auctioned like animals & treated worse than animals until death grants them release or their tortured, broken bodies are
left on the streets to die more slowly-who cares-certainly not the men who grow fabulously rich from their suffering & inhumane degredation.
Please note that U.S soldiers like NATO & U.N
NEVER face prosecution, gee,& America always trumpeting 'JUSTICE & DEMOCRACY'-for whom-what 'Democracy' in a country where the man with
biggest amount of dollars can buy the PRESIDENCY
[& just about anything else]e.g The Bush dynasty,
also The Clintons. As for JUSTICE am still waiting for Divine sort which would see Bush & Blair dragged to the Hague for War Crimes Against
Humanity but I'm not holding my breath...

LMAO@ such tripe.
Someone's been sipping Reverend Jim Jones' kool-aid once too often.

There was a quote from a soldier in the newspapers that basically said the soldiers in Iraq were fed up because they were being told to stay in there barracks all day. But in Afghanistan even though there losing more men, moral is very high because they are doing what they trained to do, taking the fight to the enemy - the taliban.

If you can find that article, I'd like to see it.

.....That is a lie...Many here who keep up with current events and seek the truth, know that American were prosecuted in the Abu Gharib prison fiasco....

.....Many here who honor justice are aware that some American soldiers were recently imprisoned for the rape and murder of some Iraqi family members..

....Many here who strive for the truth know that some US soldiers were convicted and imprisoned for killing some civilians in Iraq...

....Many here follow the events of the world and know that Nato troops were convicted and imprisoned for killing civilians in Chechyna..

....Many here from UK, know a few British soldiers have been convicted and imprisoned for assaulting civilians in Iraq...

....Many here know that UN soldiers from some African contingents have been convicted and imprisoned for war crimes....

......Morgane, you appear to either be uninformed or you have been listening to much to your favourite crazed, bearded , finger pointing Islamic cleric....or maybe you are an appeasist, apologetic leftist dhimmicrat...you sound like one...and a bitter one at that...

...go home and sip on your Islamic koolaide and try not to hold your breath too long....

Ban Muslim Immigration.

For those advocating leaving Iraq to the jihadists, whats next? Honest question. Its really a no win situation since we wont fight it to win.

Dumb question....

But can someone explain to me what the Mahdi army is? I thought it was an Iranian thing, certainly a Shiite thing.

BB,

The Mahdi is the 12th Iman or missing Iman. He is worshipped almost like Jesus among Shi'ites. According to Shi'ite traditional, the Mahdi will return with Jesus by his side and bring peace to the world. Peace as in Islamicfying the planet. If you read the rise of the Mahdi and the rise of the anti-Christ, its eeire in it is so damn close.

So of course the Shi'tes will name their army after the Mahdi.

The British troops that I've had the pleasure of serving alongside were all well trained, extremely motivated, and even tempered professionals. I am firm in my belief that any problem with our strongest ally is political not military. Looking at the Bush Presidency, we in the U.S. have very little we can complain about regarding the actions of the United Kingdom
