A new al Qaeda propaganda ad, headlined "Wait for the Big Surprise" and featuring a digitally altered photograph of President George Bush and Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf standing in front of a burning White House, was posted on the Internet today.The brief clip from al Qaeda's "as Sahab" propaganda arm juxtaposes the doctored photo of Bush and Musharraf along with previously seen images of al Qaeda's top leadership -- Osama bin Laden, Ayman al Zawahri and Adam Gadahn -- as well as a photo of an SUV in a motorcade.
There is no additional information provided in the ad, and it closes with the words, "Soon -- God willing," written across the screen and repeated several times....
A day of great CAIR activity and then this. Quite a day.
CAIR seems to be firing in all directions, aimless and undisciplined.
Al Qaeda Jihadis seem to be desperate just to get in the news.
They both seem like a rickety old Studebaker rambling down a dusty road.
We shouldn't underestimate the potency of either, but I think they are both trending down toward marginality.

Probably Iran will experience sudden "regime change." If the magnitude of an attack on the U.S. is larger than 9/11, Saudi Arabia might have to cede control of its oil fields, or there might be other drastic geo-political changes. The current movement toward increasing levels of global social surveillance would accelerate drastically.
That's one place Matt Drudge is asleep: he doesn't seem to realize that the accelerating technological development of ever cheaper WMD in ever more varieties and flavors with ever more destructive power that is ever more accessible to ever more people -- is leading toward the implementation of social surveillance to an extent currently hard to imagine. The challenge will be whether liberal democratic societies can find ways to retain a modicum of social freedom despite tremendous reductions in privacy. Apart from a vast increase in surveillance, I don't see how coming advances in biotech, nanotech, AI, explosives, and other fields have a chance of being safely managed.

o/t: There is a State that considers pez to be a registered engineer. Pez has designed bridges, got one being built as we speak. You design them to withstand earthquakes. You design them to withstand violent wind events. You design them to handle big bouncing concrete trucks. After all of this, code makes you put in a healthy safety factor. And then to cover the engineer’s rear, add a good deal of conservatism on top of it all. The public pays for the extra material and doesn’t know any better. The engineer sleeps better and has lower insurance premiums. Just one more way of ripping off the taxpayer in my opinion.
Bridge design 101: you create a concrete/metal framework upon which you construct a reinforced concrete slab. The concrete/metal framework is free-standing. Any surface work on the slab shouldn’t impact the free-standing base. Fox News’ plastering of the fact that the bridge was ‘under construction’ doesn’t make too much sense.
The idea of a bridge just falling down on a quiet evening with stationary traffic is pretty far-fetched.

That post or another one by Lileks on the same topic has been changed or deleted. It originally said something along the lines of, 99.8 percent of people surveyed did not walk to go screaming into the Mississippi when the bridge collapsed.
That was the eerily prescient part of his posting, not just a link to a news story. It was written several hours before the bridge collapsed.

o/t again; Nobody knows what happened. It is possible that four decades of the Mississippi washed out material below footings. But usually bridges in rivers use piles or place footings on bedrock.
What is weird is that the failure happened without heavy loading. Looks to me like mostly cars and a truck or two. Reportedly stationary. If a bridge had a problem, you’d expect it to fail when an army convoy was crossing at speed or something along those lines.

Actually, Leon, They may want spectacular, but they've also indicated that they are not going to target the big cities specifically, as there is a desire to let the Americans know that you are not safe just because you don't live in the NorthEast corridor, for example.
That said the last thing that came to mind when I heard of this was jihad-inspired terrorism (family lives in St. Paul, I was more concerned about them than some global jihad at the moment).
It seemed to me more so just an unfortunate accident.

NOW MIGHT be as good time a time as any for the US government to eliminate those Islamic terrorist training camps operating with impunity on American territory (in at least seven states including New York and California).
These (numerous) terrorist training camps are leaving American people vulnerable to terrorist 'spectaculars' staged by the likes of al-Qaeda and ul-Fuqra as never before. For our elected officials to permit these terrorist training camps' continued existence and operation here is absolutely UNCONSCIONABLE!!!!! (not to mention rightdown DANGEROUS!!)!.
I have contacted the US government on this issue repeatedly and have not heard even one of our elected officials address this issue publicly. I am sure many other posters at JW have had the same (frustrating) experience.
I'm with you, Pez. It is cause for for alarm if a fairly new bridge (40 years is still very young for a bridge) collapses in such a catastrophic fashion. I'll be keeping my eyes on the bridge near where I live, as it is also of similar construction.
I wonder if any of those Minn. Muslim Cab drivers were on the bridge at the time of the collapse... Just an errant thought... I'm still a little stunned about the whole thing...

Well, you have to understand. Those people have been convinced that to be 'biased' is the ultimate evil. That to have an opinion of good versus bad,up versus down, right versus wrong, is.... bad. That to have 'pre-judging' or prejudice is the ultimate evil.
Evil is non existent to them, and bad things happen because 'we' don't end all 'pre-judging' hence these others who are feeling 'lesser' they just have to gosh darn not only blow up our children, but their's too.

It seems to me that there can be many types of terrorism. This sort of article is simply one of the various types. It's nothing more than bullying, mere playground stuff.
The Internet is such an obvious route for the bullies to take and here I think that they have gone down that route. This is nothing more than a rather amateurish attempt to bully and intimidate. A playground bully in primary school could have done better. Simply because it's on the Internet doesn't mean that it has any validity beyond the attempted intimidation of westerners.
Al-Qaida, and all its associate organisations, more or less have to produce some sort of Internet headline everyday and I think that this is merely one of them.

Operating A Plasma Arc For Cutting
Begin cutting by placing the torch as close as possible to the edge of the base metal. Press the trigger to initiate the preflow air; the pilot arc will then light, followed by the cutting arc. Once the cutting arc starts, move the torch slowly across the metal, maintaining a distance of 1/16" to 1/8" from the workpiece. All Miller Electric plasma cutters have a drag shield, which lets the operator drag the torch across the workpiece while the torch tip stays the appropriate distance from the metal. Adjust your speed so that the cutting sparks emerge from the bottom of the metal. You should be able to see the bottom of the workpiece and the arc should be directed straight down. If it's a big surprise, why are they giving it away? Assuming these demented islamic psychos follow some sort of guideline established in the qur'an or muhammad's addled brain before they launch catastrophic terror attacks, I believe they have already warned us to convert or face the consequences.
I guess they want to lay some mental anguish on us while we wait to be vaporized or smashed to pieces. So, thanks to the advice of many posters here I have been preparing my family for any possible interruptions in goods and services by stocking up on essentials: water, canned food, meds, personal items, etc. I already have 2 large guard dogs and I am signed up for a 1st time shooter handgun course and plan to buy a gun. Well, if a nuclear detonation is a possibility in a city somewhere near you -- probably only a few cities are a real concern as targets of Islamic terror: NY, DC, and a few others in the U.S. -- then if you really want to be prepared, you should get some cheap radiation shielding so you can avoid radiation exposure for at least a week or several weeks after the blast. After that, the radiation levels apparently would be low enough (except for the occasional hotspot) to permit you to evacuate to areas more distant from the blast and less affected by radiation. Setting up a small space that is radiation shielded can be very inexpensive and not difficult. There are some websites out there on doing that and other survival prep for a nuclear blast (assuming one is some distance away from the blast, obviously) and I remember at least one site that seemed pretty sane and gave advice about cheaply shielding a space from radiation.

I am a middle-class, over 50, educated business owner and in not-so-distant times was a supporter of more stringent gun laws. But times have changed, or hadn't you noticed? I live in a transitional neighborhood full of good people and some who are not so good (I have 20 registered sex offenders living within a mile of my house).
