Raised by hippie parents, then turned to hate & jihad

Here's a profile of Adam Gadahn -- nothing we haven't posted before, but perhaps some of you have not yet made his charming acquaintance. "Dirty rat behind dirty bomb scare: Raised by hippie parents, then turned to hate & radical Islam," by Celeste Katz for the New York Daily News:

The homegrown terrorist at the center of an Al Qaeda dirty bomb threat against the city is the first American charged with treason in more than 50 years and lives with a $1 million bounty on his head.

Adam Yahiye Gadahn grew up the son of California hippies. He lived on a sprawling goat farm at the foot of the San Jacinto mountains. He is the grandson of a Jewish doctor.

He dabbled in death metal music as a teen, but by all accounts had a peaceful childhood until he embraced a virulent strain of Islam to fill a void in his life.

Gadahn was 17 when he announced his conversion and began frequenting an Islamic center where authorities say he came under the influence of foreign-born Islamic radicals.

As a U.S. citizen, he represents a growing breed of homegrown extremists who have turned against their country.

Gadahn, 29, is known as Azzam the American and serves as a key Al Qaeda mouthpiece, appearing frequently in the terror group's propaganda videos.

On the fourth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Gadahn declared in a tape that Osama Bin Laden's followers "love nothing better than the heat of battle, the echo of explosions and slitting the throats of the infidels."

One wonders how this convert got the Religion of Peace so terribly wrong. And what programs do CAIR, MPAC and the like have planned to prevent this sort of thing in the future. Ibrahim? Salam? Anyone?

'...slitting the throats of the infidels.'

i.e. killing all those nasty people who were mean to me when I was a kid. But he fools himself it's not revenge by calling it religion.

CAIR, it seems, are enablers, facilitators, and silent partners of that brand of "a more Islamic Islam" for which Adam Gadahn serves as poster child.

I've come to honestly believe that the only good thing that came out of the 60s was music.

A thinly veiled air of superiority, claims of peacefulness in a utopian society, threats of violence if you don’t see the need for things to be their way. Not surprising that this apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

Most hippies I’ve met have latent violence and rage issues that are expressed in a strange passive aggressive veneer. They talk peace, but are typically the first to swing. They also have self-loathing issues that they transfer on to others and then embrace some utopian concepts they barely grasp as a way to feel superior over those they consider their moral and mental inferiors. They speak of how it’s good that people die in natural disasters to reduce the strain of too many humans on the plant. And at the same time they give money to an orphanage for orangutans, but wouldn’t give a dime to feed a starving human child. Though not all hippies are that way, so many I’ve encountered are, that it’s a sad archetype.

Is it any wonder the Socialist, Communist, and Fascist have found a friend in the Islamist in their battle against the individualist.

.....could we not find this man and let him eat his own words.

or let him eat koran instead. he will not be charged by eating it.

"Raised by hippie parents, then turned to hate & jihad"

Many people are raised in dysfunctional homes environments, deprived of love by uncaring parents, maybe even phisically and mentally abused.

Adam Gadahn's life doesn't sound especially deprived or brutal. The fact that his parents were hippies doesn't mean they didn't love him. Hippie parents are as capable of loving their children as anyone else, certainly as much, and maybe even more than many conventional looking parents.

If Gadahn's hippie parents failed to give him any moral direction in his early life, that could account for the void that sent him searching for something to believe in. But, again, spiritual voids in peoples lives are as common as dirt.

There's nothing unusual about searching for something to believe in, but common sense alone should be enough to enable a person to distinguish between good and evil.

Adam Gadahn made a willful decision to embrace something that is evil, just as many German youths choose to join the NAZIS in the 1930s. Neither Islam or the NAZIS lied to anyone. Both are up-front about their beliefs. Both make no secrets about who they hate, and what they'll do to those they hate.

Is Adam Gadahn sincere about his beliefs? He is now. Once someone makes a willful decision to embrace evil, it becomes engrained in the spirit, and he becomes sincerely evil.

There's an excuse for most Muslims. They're born into their darkness, and it's almost impossible to break free from it, but there's no excuse for Gadahn. He was born into a world where light was all around him, but he preferred darkness. He had many choices, but he betrayed himself by his own willful decisions.

Cornelius,

My thought exactly. I thought that to myself just a few days ago, when I was rummaging for an old Beatles collection.

Sixties kids are now the pushers of Occidentalism at [w]academic institutions, and the kumbayistic policymakers at State Department.

rational,

There's an excuse for most Muslims. They're born into their darkness, and it's almost impossible to break free from it, but there's no excuse for Gadahn.

To be raised by hippies is already a good start on the way to darkness. Those who embraced the Viet Cong in the 1960's are now sympathizers with, if not converts to (like Gadahn), Islam. A change of specifics, but underneath it's the same now as then.

And what programs do CAIR, MPAC and the like have planned to prevent this sort of thing in the future. Ibrahim? Salam? Anyone?
They are planning wrist slaps, and "condemnation" for all who "misrepresents" True Islam(TM).

Cornelius,

I've come to honestly believe that the only good thing that came out of the 60s was music

The music was one of the vehicles for the culture. Remember "If you are going to San Fracisco" ?

The 60s were an idealistic age, in which people really thought they could change the world by being "free spirits", and rebeling against authority. The problem of course is that the real world made sure that their humanistic dreams went down the toilet.

The spiritual void in their souls is still there, and they are trying to fill it with things that won't work. We were made in Image of God, and only He can fill that void, not Muhammad, not the islamic allah, neither the holley Qur'an

....If you are incapable of adapting to society, have a yearning to rape, pillage, or kill, are unwilling to learn a trade, seek revenge for imagined injustices bestowed upon your miserable life, are unwilling to abide by the freedoms given to you which were paid for by the blood of the great men and women in your countries short but fabled history, and you seek to associate with the most unstable and miserable excuses for human beings history has ever seen...then Islam is for you....Adam has made this decision....he is a loser...Islam is for losers,,...

ban Muslim Immigration..

Professors of Self-Esteem Studies should have a field day with the terminally confused and wretched, such as Adam Gadahn and John Walker Lindh. Why not use their case histories, the way business schools use business-history case studies, and law schools already adjudicated cases, in courses in child-rearing, as indictments, for that matter, of much of modern America. Sure, give it an anti-American slant, if you will, but make sure you point out how and why these miserable psyhic misfits are such obvious and fit fodder for Islam. That should please everybody.

Little Adam lived on a sprawling goat farm.

That a "hippie" lifestyle would breed a violent, anti-American fanatic doesn't surprise me. Although the counterculture ostensibly promotes pacifism and love, it's main engine has always been alienation. Anyone acquainted with its adherents can sense their hatred of mainstream culture, often expressed as hatred of America. It's also not surprising that a Jew would be involved, since Jews are especially alienated from mainstream culture.
The tragedy is the failure to find constructive expression for that alienation, in the arts, for example, or through philanthropic organizations aimed at reformation of mainstream culture, as at JihadWatch, for example.

jewdog,

It's also not surprising that a Jew would be involved, since Jews are especially alienated from mainstream culture.

No, it's about a Jew who was (probably; I'm reasoning from my familiarity with such cases, one of them having been... myself) raised on the negative aspects of Judaism ("All the goyim hate us!"--negative and also a distortion, because it's untrue. Just one look at LGF refutes that), without the positive aspects (Judaism as being G-d's nation of priests). Jews with a complete Orthodox Jewish education don't stray away to graze in strange fields such as Marxism and Islam.

Our attention to the treason laws are sersioulsty lacking . We would not have to here from so many whackos today and we would have identified the enemy and won by now.

For my money the best thing to come out of the 60's was the Apollo program and the moon landings. Some of the music was pretty good, but only some.

Do you mean orthodox Jews?

I've gone to school and worked with a lot of Jewish people who are full participants in mainstream culture.

Noted here from a video in 2006,Gadahns highlights Robert, Daniel Pipes, Michael Scheuer, Steven Emerson,, and President Bush.

On September 2, 2006 a video called "Invitation to Islam" surfaced on various pro-al Qaeda websites. It featured a lecture by Adam Gadahn for 44 minutes i. In this video, Gadahn stated "If the Zionist crusader missionaries of hate and counter-Islam consultants like Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Michael Scheuer, Steven Emerson, and yes, even the crusader-in-chief George W. Bush were to abandon their unbelief and repent and enter into the light of Islam and turn their swords against the enemies of God, it would be accepted of them and they would be our brothers in Islam." Both Pipes and Spencer publicly declined to accept Gadahn's invitation to convert to Islam.

In the same video Gadahn praised British politician George Galloway and journalist Robert Fisk for expressing their "respect and admiration for Islam" and for "demonstrating their sympathy for Muslims causes", but added "I say to them, isn't it time you stopped sitting on the fence and came over to the side of truth?" Gadahn urged American soldiers to "surrender to the truth" and "escape from the unbelieving Army" and "join the winning side

It's also not surprising that a Jew would be involved, since Jews are especially alienated from mainstream culture.

Drivel!

BTW, it says his grandfather was Jewish, not also his grandmother, father and mother. In addition, his Jewish grandfather was a doctor. How was he "alienated from mainstream culture" if he went to med school to get a doctorate?

Go back to your stereotypical drawing board and try again.

What's weird for me in watching whatever video Adam is in is the recurring "Truman Show" effect...peering in through the TV to see this kid grow, with the early videos having crumbs on his beard.

...And not much of a beard. You can actually see the kid mature into something 60's Free Love & Bananas...never, dreamed of...The Revolution Will Not Be Televised!!!! Wait, but it will!

Even his speech patterns started maturing...in the last videos, he has no problems at all pronouncing Arabic words and verses from the Koran with as much inflection as Dr. Ayman Al-Zawahri.

I even thought I detected a look of paternal approval from Zawahri from some of the last few vids when Adam took the helm.

If you think about it, Azzam would be the perfect CIA mole since he's garnered the trust and approval of Al-Queda leadership, and his views on America probably dominate the thinking. He's in an interesting position where they've given him rule of the eventual North American Caliphate (from that vid where he lugubriously says, "Come on over to the other side...") in a syrupy voice.

Wherever he's at, it's playing hell with his sinuses if you compare early tapes with the last three vids...he sounds congested, stuffed up and plugged, almost raspy.

Finally, the kid can read a tele-prompter now, and if you notice it's almost like he's being portrayed as #3 in the leadership.

I'm sure that OBL is quite proud of his American propaganda star, problem is, if he thinks the average American kid is like Adam, he hasn't watched Bart Simpson.

And that's why we'll win this thing.

First, it ain't the goats' fault.

For some of us children of the 60's, it began as a search for truth, and we found it. The truth is love and beauty, just as the poet wrote centuries before. Most of us learned that love is choice, a decision, and a life-long responsibility. We became adults who contribute and serve.

Others of our "love children" took a bad turn in their "path to enlightenment". They found "shelter" in "caves" of thought inside of which they became lost. As "adults", they often act-out in childish, destructive ways. They learned to blame, not create. They came to hate, not appreciate.

All of us old hippies didn't turn out like Manson or Gadahn. I've a long list of hippy-friends from the 60's who have led remarkable lives of benefit to others. They are not all bitter anarchists, murderous cult-members, or pot-smoking adulterous ex-Presidents of the United States. Give at least a few of us members of the OFC (Old Fart's Club) a break now and again.

Speaking as someone who was made in the Summer of Love, sometimes I wish some brave souls in the Amsterdam Air Force would load up a squadron of 50 C-130's and then drop 10 million hits of Ecstasy over the entire Middle East.

Who knows, it just might work...

Okay people. ADAM GADAHN IS NOT, I REPEAT, IT NOT AND WAS NOT A JEW. Gadahn's paternal grandfather was a Jewish doctor who settled with his non-Jewish wife in Orange County, California at the end of WW2. His son was raised as a Christian. Adam Gadahn's mother was a Christian and they raised the boy in that faith tradition.

Stop saying Gadahn is a Jew or that Jews are "estranged from mainstream culture." Jews in America are fully integrated into every aspect of this nation's culture and society. Saying otherwise, or calling this man a Jew, or trying to interpret his motives psychologically, just makes one sound ignorant.

Just to clarify my remarks about Jews being alienated. I do not mean Orthodox Jews, since they tend to have a firm sense of belonging and often vote Republican, although many are non or anti-Zionist. I mean the secular or Reform Jews. Reform Judaism is ethically similar to secular liberalism. That's why American Jews vote democratic at roughly 89%, the same frequency as blacks, another alienated minority. Noam Chomsky, Tony Judt and many leading anti-Zionist, leftwing radicals on campus are Jews. Many radicals during the '60s were Jews. Jews are often in the forefront of leftist, extremist movements in the West. Many of the leading British union, anti-Israel boycotters are Jewish Trotskyites. Thay have now turned their attention to helping the Global Jihad, having been at the service of Communism for many years.
Come on, you guys didn't know that? That's not stereotyping, that's reality.
I sympathize with their alienation, but not with their masochistic means of expressing it.

"And what programs do CAIR, MPAC and the like have planned to prevent this sort of thing in the future. Ibrahim? Salam? Anyone?"

A moment of silence while they consult with their attorney Joseph E. Sandler.

I wish I had some details on exactly where this traitor lived. I know Southern Cal like the back of my hand much of it I have explored on foot. More importantly I have always traveled the area making work related contact with average citizens so I understand the demographics. OC is/was a fertile area however the further you go from the sea and the closer you get to the desert the ground takes a drastic turn downward you can view it as you drive along. His dad’s area is probably good only for goats as plants generally don’t grow well in rock. So if you were a serious farmer/rancher you would not pick that area. This is the type of area that would have made a great location for the African after battle scene in the early part of the movie Patton. Sounds like a desert rat to me and that they existed similar to how the Manson family lived in LA County. It is a good place to move if you are a weirdo, and this is the truth and it is a little spooky, some say the sun out there or the terrain or both does something to the already weak mind and I cant argue with that. Anyway my point is that his family made an effort to get lost so where did he encounter a mosque? What city? What year? I need to know because the anti muslim sentiment he talks about developing in the 90s is bs. Remember the 79 hostage crisis? A little talked about fact is that in OC there was a substantial anti muslim backlash. So the feelings have been there for much longer than he says and I suspect anti American sentiment was well established in whatever mosque he visited long before he showed up. So if anyone has details please post them so I can track his movements through his yout up to becoming a traitor.

From Death Metal to Death Cult.

Next step, just death.

ASAP.

Prickzilla:

ROFLMAO! I don't think anyone else even got it!

I think a fitting end for Gadahn would be in a 8'x8'x8' metal box somewhere on a US base in Afghanistan with "Tiptoe through the Tulips" blasted in 24 hrs a day at +/-120 db.

He dabbled in death metal music as a teen, but by all accounts had a peaceful childhood until he embraced a virulent strain of Islam to fill a void in his life.

Must have been one horrific "void" if only a "virulent" strain of islam could fill it. Too bad he couldn't find a kind and gentle strain of islam to fill the empty space in his worthless life, but he probably didn't bother to search for that because he knows it doesn't exist.

Good to see you're here, CGW.

The "peace" and "love" hippies talk about seems to have been mostly drug induced. Their politics seems to always be on the edge of anarchy. They did have cool music—I still like psychadelic rock. Remembering the pre-hippie world and comparing it with the world today, i think their "revolution" may have worked. I know a lot of hippie parents—their kids tend to be either really cool or really screwed up.

‘STOP THE ISLAMIFICATION OF EUROPE’ DEMONSTRATION (11th SEPT)

Freddy Thielmans, Mayor of Brussels, has banned a demonstration which was scheduled to take place on Tuesday 11th September at 1pm outside the building of the European Parliament to protest against the relentless ‘Islamification of Europe’. The organisers are now mounting a formal legal challenge to the Mayor’s right to take this action.

Until this matter is properly resolved they cannot endorse or accept any responsibility for any protest made by any individual or group of individuals.

However the Mayor of Brussels has no power to prevent tourists from visiting his city. Visitors to this website might like to consult ‘sioe.wordpress.com’ to gain helpful information about visitor amenities and tourist attractions in Brussels.

So besides the moon landing and the music what good ever came out of the 60s?

Could any ex-hippies tell me how they became a hippie, and then how that got cured?

It's plain that the majority of posters here don't like 'hippies', now would someone define just what a hippie is...

You, too. I'm always here, just like a lot of us old-timers. I read a lot but just don't post much, since I said it all a few years ago. I just give the newbies a chance to vent.

The end of this heavy-metal-brained animal torturer Adam Gadahn (later turned Muslim) will be very much like this at the hands of a Muslim........the tortured animals are crying for vengeance, Adam....

Finis Fanucci Gadahn

They forgot a couple things...
1) his family-aquired hedonism bred the inevitable narcissism,
2) eventually giving way to malignant narcissism
3) he got turned down by some girl because he was such a loser, so...

...in classic signs of his malignant narcissism (that of either being a superhero, or supervillain, one MUST prevail in malignant narcissistic personality disorders)

The text in italics IS based on "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited", fourth, revised, printing (2003)

An all-pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behaviour), need for admiration or adulation and lack of empathy, usually beginning by early adulthood and present in various contexts. Five (or more) of the following criteria must be met:
*Feels grandiose and self-important (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents to the point of lying, demands to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
*Is obsessed with fantasies of unlimited success, fame, fearsome power or omnipotence, unequalled brilliance (the cerebral narcissist), bodily beauty or sexual performance (the somatic narcissist), or ideal, everlasting, all-conquering love or passion
*Firmly convinced that he or she is unique and, being special, can only be understood by, should only be treated by, or associate with, other special or unique, or high-status people (or institutions)
*Requires excessive admiration, adulation, attention and affirmation - or, failing that, wishes to be feared and to be notorious (narcissistic supply)
*Feels entitled. Expects unreasonable or special and favorable priority treatment. Demands automatic and full compliance with his or her expectations
*Is "interpersonally exploitative", i.e., uses others to achieve his or her own ends
*Devoid of empathy. Is unable or unwilling to identify with or acknowledge the feelings and needs of others
*Constantly envious of others or believes that they feel the same about him or her

Arrogant, haughty behaviours or attitudes coupled with rage when frustrated, contradicted, or confronted

Some of the language in the criteria above is based on or summarized from:

...and since islam appeared to be his only way out, VOILA!
adam gadahn morphs into his new identity of, not Superman, but *BOING!* "azzam al-amriki"!

Thus the result based on long-established pattern:
Hedonism breed narcissism, untreated
narcissism breeds paranoia, untreated
paranoia breeds schizophrenia, untreated
schizophrenia breeds (among other things) islamofascism, which treatment is then pointless.

Freshamn Psychology made simple.
LOL

If young Mr. Gadahn had any moral bearings whatsoever, if he studied the Qur'an he would have found a deity that is vicious, mean, violent, controlling, unloving, unmerciful, uncompassionate, and downright bellicose. Compare this deity to the Father of Jesus and the Yahweh of the Jews and you would see a stark contrast in values and moral stance. If one was raised on the values of the Judaeo-Christian God, then those values would serve to guide one in making a proper assessment of what "Allah" is all about. Anyone who cannot come to the conclusion that Allah is Satanic never had good bearings to begin with.

The heart must always play a role in what the head does with articles of faith. Clearly, his heart was corrupt and so his mind's attraction to the simple tenets of Islam follows quite logically.

I think that deconstructing Mr. Gadahn's inner life in psychotherapy would reveal some hidden and ugly facets of his parents' and other caregivers.

We just did, Fred...both our posts are two sides of the same coin, and both spot on.
Great job...^5s

Read this.

duh_swami,

It's that many hippies tried to subvert and destroy the age-old accepted morals, politics and religion of Western countries, even to the point of siding with declared enemies of our countries in order to do so that causes them to be disliked.

That said, their movement broke almost every accepted rule of our societies, sometimes in sheer hateful destructiveness, but often in discovering new, possibly better, ways to express them.

While I do like some parts of the movement, I think that it was cancer or a hemorrhagic fever on society. We would have been better off without it.

Lexicographer Jesse Sheidlower, the principal American editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, states that the terms hipster and hippie derive from the word hip, whose origins are unknown.

The following is true to the best of my knowledge.
You read it first on JW...

I confess, I invented hippies, or at least was instrumental in coining the word. In those days I lived in Vallejo, California, which is about thirty miles from S.F. In the days just prior to hippies, the word 'HEP', like 'I am hep', or in the 'know', was in common use.
No one anywhere was using the word 'hip'. I gave it deliberate thought, and started using the word 'hip' instead of hep. The next thing I knew everyone was using the word hip. Soon there was such a thing as a hippie. That made me the very first 'hippie'. Can you imagine that? Strange but true.
The origins of the word 'hip' are not unknown any longer...now you know the rest of the story.

Seems to me, from the little bit that I've read, that Adam Gadahn and Johnny Jihad (Walker Lindh) have a lot in common.

I grew up in the SF Bay Area in the 60s and 70s. The only "children of hippies" that I knoq who ever made anything of themselves are the ones who "rebelled" against their libertine parents and became conservatives and/or Christians. The rest, I'm afraid, are in and out of rehab and 12-Step programs, can't hold jobs, and play the perpetual "victim of society" game.

The history of the word hippie has me curious.

Hep?

Any relation to the expression "hopped up" or "pep"?

My hunch is that "hep" probably has it's origins in some obscure corner of the jazz scene, as in something that someone sang or said in a jam session that just stuck and spread -- in the way that so many completely informal, spontaneous and personal things do. But I wonder if there isn't some relation to the phrase "hopped up" or "pep", as in "pep-pills", an old expression for benzedrine and such.

The later development is clearly from hip -> hipster -> hippie.

The older terms hip and hep originally had implications of being in possession of secret knowledge -- secret knowledge being an important part of the romance of that time.

It's always struck me as significant that the aesthetic of the period was always so ... well anesthetic if you'll excuse me.

Passion was never in it. Emotion yes. But jaded indifference was the expressed ideal.

All of this is rather off topic, but of interest to me.

BTW it is my settled conviction that a portion of the hippie crowd were in rebellion against the socialized institutions of the post WWII period, which were a legacy of the war and the Roosevelt period.

They were raised on ideals of American individualism and then confronted with the coarse impersonal realities of the bureaucratic post-war gov't-run school system.

This is not to say that there weren't plenty of rotten eggs in the bunch. But I'll bet that the later outcomes were closely correlated to the original motives.

Plenty of malcontents that would otherwise have been ordinary neurotics became enshrined cultural types.

Apart from all this, mere demographics tell us that there have to be plenty of less active and less dramatic Gadahns out there.

Both aware and mindless fifth columnists.

Whoever said the worst people have some good in them was totally wrong. These people like Adam, which I won’t refer to him with his Islamic name, has absolutely no good in him. They all sit around the camp fire praying to kill, maim and torture people. Freaks, they aren’t human…nor is the fictitious allah…and mohammad. He is threatening the lives of all his family members...sorry for his parents.

hip·pie also hip·py (hĭp'ē) pronunciation
n., pl. -pies.

A person who opposes and rejects many/all of the conventional standards and customs of society, especially one who advocates extreme liberalism in sociopolitical attitudes and lifestyles.

lol...`nuf sed.
;-)

The definition of hippy should have gone further to emphasize hippies completely avowed aversion to bathing and dental hygiene (see pictures of islamic rage boy). Yeah, he lives the hippy lifestyle, no work, all day to protest, living off other people (us, the decadent capitalist pigs)

I find it curious that the author of the article feels it imperative to mention that this little creep has one Jewish grandparent? Why not mention the religion in which he was raised. Talk about a sub-plot!

In the immortal words of Eric Cartman, "I'm gonna get all these hippies and they will respect my authori-tah!"

First there were 'Bohemians', that morphed into 'Beatnic's', these people were all 'HEP'. Which has nothing to do with drugs. It is an exclamation, that 'I am in the know', I understand', I am 'HEP'. Thats what the word means, and how it was used then, and to this day. The word 'HIP' means the same thing, but became a cultural movement when a group of like minded people morphed that one into the word 'Hippie', and applied it to themselves. It was the introduction of drugs that wrecked the hippie movement. Some hippies got jobs and went up the corporate ladder and were called, 'Yuppies'. Other hippies chose to live by the river and grow pot, or live in old school buses and tents in the woods.
Most, but not all, of these 'never give it up hippies' are liberals.

I agree joeblough,
I also believe that after WWII the country having just made it through a harrowing ordeal. Some of us were so determined to never see it happen again that they started living their lives with the commitment not to fight under any circumstance. Others were so sick of fighting and just wanted to go on with their lives and so stayed silent or didn’t even recognize what was happening. You can see it in the movies after WWII the constant theme of fear of guns the fear of confrontation. Those themes were never seen before WWII. Then you have to take into account that everyone saw the WWII group as hero’s that saved the world and that is a tough thing to measure up to so inevitably some will have sour grapes over that issue. Their parents tuned in, turned on and dropped in(to Europe) they did just the opposite, tune in turn on and drop out. It just goes to show us that no matter what we do the job is never done as long as we are alive we are responsible for what allow ignore or participate in.

Now now, it's not entirely true that all hippies end up on skid row...
...many of them end up elected to office, especially in san franpsycho (nuf sed), lalaland, "coke"land...and sometimes even governor & attorney general (jerry "moonbeam" brown), and some even do better...they lie about their own troops, getting some killed, an end up in the senate (guess), and get to spew their wares on national television.

Lovely.
