Republican lawmakers are urging the Justice Department not to participate in a convention held by the Islamic Society of North America — a group named as an unindicted co-conspirator in an ongoing terrorism-financing case.In a letter to Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, Reps. Peter Hoekstra of Michigan, ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and Sue Myrick of North Carolina called the Justice Department's involvement a "grave mistake."
"In light of the threat that our nation ... is currently facing from radical jihadists, and because of the president's commitment to fighting the war on terror on all fronts, we believe it is a grave mistake to provide legitimacy to an organization with extremist origins, leadership and a radical agenda," the lawmakers said.
Rep. Peter T. King, New York Republican and ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, said he agrees that Justice officials should not attend the conference.
"It is absolute insanity for the federal government, especially the Department of Justice, to be giving any credibility at all to a group like the ISNA, which has such strong links to Islamic extremism," Mr. King said.

This should not be a matter for Republicans. Where are the Democrats? How foolish of them not to put to rest any worries that they are "soft on terrorism." What would it cost them? Nothing. What would it gain them? A great deal.
The war in Iraq is one of the greatest follies in American history. But the domestic campaign to limit the power and influence of those conducting Jihad, often financially supported by the Saudis and others aborad, directly and indirectly, may be in places too weak, or too confused, but is not a mistake.
Perhaps the Ant-Jihad Congressional caucus headed by Myrick is bearing some fruit.

I've been reading an essay addressed by Bin Laden to other Muslims. The essay is published in The Al Qaeda Reader.
It's disturbing, because Bin Laden understands a great deal, both about Islam and about the West's ideas of freedom. He is more sophisticated than one might suppose. He quotes copiously from the Qur'an and the hadiths Muslims consider reliable: Bukhari and Muslim, and uses such quotes as justification for making offensive war against non-Muslims.
It would be easier to comprehend the evils of Bin Laden's position if he were a completely unsophisticated moron. And on a certain level, that is precisely what he is. But there is no denying that he combines a certain kind of sophistication with his advocacy of disgusting evils, and that makes his advocacy the more horrifying, the more demonic. It's one thing when a mindless beast kills someone. But when a intellectualized being like Bin Laden uses conscious theory to advocate disgusting evils and, without any scientific proof, and relying on his own arrogance, asserts that some physical book (the Qur'an) put together by mere human beings justifies him in murdering and dominating and tyrannizing others -- when one meets this in Bin Laden's writings, an almost supernatural disgust runs up the spine.

A valid observation up to a point, Hugh, but frankly, the Democrats ARE squishy soft on terrorism, and some hypothetical Democratic lip service supporting the Republicans here would hardly "put to rest" my worries. The Republicans have made mistakes in opposing the global jihad, but they are still a few pages ahead of the Democrats, many of whom need to be convinced there IS a global jihad in the first place (yes, John Edwards, MSM gave you a pass, but I didn't). Hugh, can you name even one Dem, except Lieberman, who you would feel comfortable with leading our country against the global jihad?
Of course the Democrats aren't involved... They get the Muslim vote and cozy up to them.

Why the Democrat bashing? The Justice Dept. is an extension of the administration, hand-picked by the Chief and Gonzo himself, they 'heil' the White House line. Republicans are afraid that this may make the party look soft on terrorism. Dems want the JD to step in it so they can throw it back later, when it's more useful.
