South Carolina: 2 Muslims charged with felonies in explosives scare

Megahed and Mohamed Update. "2 charged with felonies in explosives scare; Authorities tightlipped on what was found in car," by Noah Haglund and Andy Paras for the Charleston News and Courier (thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist):

GOOSE CREEK — Two men pulled over Saturday in Goose Creek and detained for carrying explosives in the trunk of a car have been charged with possession of an incendiary device, Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt announced today.

If convicted of the charges, Youseff Megahed, 21, and Ahmed Mohamed, 24, could face between 2 to 15 years in prison.

DeWitt said the men were pulled over Saturday night on U.S. Highway 176 while driving more than 60 mph in a 45-mph zone. When an officer approached the car, he saw one of them men fold a laptop computer, which the officer believed was suspicious, DeWitt said.

The officer asked them if he could search the car, which the men agreed to. When he asked if there was anything in the car he should know about, the men said there were fireworks in the trunk.

DeWitt declined to say this morning exactly what was found in the trunk. However, the FBI has already said the men are not suspected of orchestrating a terrorist plot.

Then what were they doing? Why 2 to 15 years in prison?

CAIR's Ahmed Bedier has picked up on this incongruity also:

And an Islamic community leader from Tampa, Fla., who’s been in touch with the families of the two detained college students, told The Post and Courier that Megahed and Mohamed are not troublemakers and that they a were simply on a weekend trip to North Carolina.

Ahmed Bedier, executive director of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil rights organization for Muslims, said family members have told him they think the materials were leftover fireworks Megahed kept in his trunk since July 4.

“Both of them are really naïve kids,” Bedier said.

He said Megahed is a permanent legal resident of the United States and Mohamed was the passenger. Mohamed’s legal status is not known.

“There’s a lot of unanswered questions,” Bedier said.

A terrorism task force, meanwhile is reviewing the evidence, said FBI spokesman Richard Kolko.

“At this point, it is too early in the investigation to say there is any link to terrorism,” Kolko said.

If its just a bunch of firecrackers; Why wont they say so? What, a bottle rocket cant be discussed?

We'll know when they reveal what was in the trunk. Fireworks seem unlikely, but it'll be pretty embarassing to law enforcement if that's all that's there.

DeWitt declined to say this morning exactly what was found in the trunk.

Hrrmmm, what is the betting that they are RPG's?

As an officer of the University of South Florida’s American Society of Mechanical Engineers Chapter, Youssef Megahed should have known that gravity is a far better way to release a whole bunch of energy than a van with explosives.

Heck, he must have been sleeping through the plasma arc lessons during welding class. Cuts through steel just like butter. Silly Jihadis.

....more like, two giggling Muslims with explosives.....

Is it not illegal for noncitizens to be in possession of explosives for any reason? I know as a legal resident (but noncitizen) of the U.S. for several years I could not carry a firearm.

But exactly what this turns out to be and why Bedier feels compelled to once more step in makes little difference -- it is pretty clear to me that this is not an accidental encounter, and the kids were scripted as to what to do beforehand. This is another 6 imams story.

These kids were set up to deliberately be pulled over with as suspicious a cargo as possible. They will have a prefabricated reason "explaining" everything in the trunk, and authorities will be threatened for a lawsuit over any kind of investigations they try to instigate. They will be accused of unfair racial profiling, targetting of muslims, etc. Bedier et al will do their best to raise a furor about "Islamophobia".

I hope the FBI handle this one wisely as was done with the 6 imams affair. In fact, I think this kind of behavior signals them to investigate the previous collusion between these kids and the groups that are making a fuss. I'll be highly suprised if these teenagers cannot be placed at a meeting with CAIR (or a similar organization) leadership within a 6 day period prior to Saturday's arrest. That's when the details of the staged event were worked out.

Hold on folks, it gets a bit bumpier from here. The so-called "terrorism probe" has now moved from the airways to the highways.

if cair is vouching for them, they must be guilty as hell.

l agree it could be another set up, why would these so called islamists be speeding on a highway, they probably wanted to be stopped by the cops.. looks and smells like another flying imman stunt.

"This is another 6 imams story."
-- Archimedes2

You may be on to something there. if the items in the trunk turn out to be legal (or even illegal) fireworks, then this incident begins to resemble the flying imams incident: muslims engaging in suspicious activity designed to provoke a response from law enforcement that will give CAIR an excuse to scream muslim profiling & islamophobia.as far as i'm concerned, if dez muslim youts were truly well-intentioned, they would not have driven a car knowing that fireworks were on board.

I want to know why %#)!@#$ are free to roam about in our land. What a bunch of idiots we have in charge of this country!

What if they were WORKING for the Feds, attempting to infiltrate a terror cell with a 'small' quantity of explosives when they were pulled over by a small town sherriff who had not been apprised of the operation.

Woudn't that explain the descrepancy between what the FBI says was in the car (fireworks) and what the sherriff said ( one assembled bomb and materials to make more, along with chemicals). Wouldn't that explain why the FBI blew up some of the evidence and took possesion of the rest for 'further evaluation'?

Also, there needs to be an answer as to WHY this story seems to have a mystery force attempting to suppress it. For example, why, after THREE DAYS has it NEVER popped up on DRUDGE?

Just finished reading Religion of Peace?, Robert Spencer's latest book, which Amazon just a few days ago started shipping to buyers.

The book is powerful, and provided one suspends one's prejudices and sticks with it, it grows increasingly powerful the further into it one reads. The book reveals anew the roots of our civilization, its central historical threads.

Jihadists want to murder Spencer because he tries to tell the truth about Islam, but with his last two books, and now this new one just out, Spencer has transformed the cultural landscape. Now, whether they know it or not, it's too late for the would-be assassins, as any action against Spencer will only propel Spencer's books to stratospheric bestseller status. I think that's especially true about The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam, and also The Truth about Muhammad, and now, Religion of Peace? Why Christianity Is And Islam Isn't.

Also, there needs to be an answer as to WHY this story seems to have a mystery force attempting to suppress it. For example, why, after THREE DAYS has it NEVER popped up on DRUDGE?

Let's fix that for them;

Ahmed Bedier, executive director of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil rights organization for Muslims AND unindicted Hamas terrorism co-conspirators...
There, that's better.

New details;

Explosive Materials: Men claim they're Fireworks: Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne Dewitt address members of the media at 11:30 Monday morning... Dewitt says the men told deputies they had items in the car for making fireworks. They are being held for possession of those items -- some chemicals with the intent to distribute. Sheriff Dewitt was not able to give much info. But we now know more about the two men. Megahed is from Egypt and Mohamed is from Kuwait. Both have addresses in Tampa, Florida and have legal status in the U.S. When asked about the chance of terrorist activity... Dewitt says he can't be sure... But they have not ruled out they really were only making fire works.
Sounds like they definitely were NOT fireworks, but chemical precursors for explosives.

I want to know why %#)!@#$ are free to roam about in our land. What a bunch of idiots we have in charge of this country!

ANSWER:

…the FBI has already said the men are not suspected of orchestrating a terrorist plot…A terrorism task force, meanwhile is reviewing the evidence, said FBI spokesman RICHARD KOLKO

RICHARD(Smooth talking)KOLKO:

Eleven missing Egyptian student visa holders:
FBI Special Agent RICHARD KOLKO said there is no threat associated with the men.

Scuba Jihad:
FBI spokesman RICHARD KOLKO described the advisory as routine and said it was not prompted by any threat.

School bus Jihad:
"There is no plot. There is no threat. And parents and children can feel perfectly safe," FBI spokesman RICHARD KOLKO told FOXNews.com...

VT Shooting:
RICHARD KOLKO knew it wasn’t terrorism before the shooter was identified.

7 arrests over Chicago plot:
“There is no imminent threat to Miami or any other area because of these operations,” said RICHARD KOLKO, spokesman for FBI headquarters in Washington. He declined further comment.

RICHARD KOLKO was probably the first to undergo CAIR sensitivity training. If they failed to alert local law enforcement of a sting that is on the FBI. I would trust local law enforcement first. It is their community not RICHARD KOLKOs.

I'm with MP above.

-XRDC

I agree. This may be a set-up, another, "Law enforcement always victimizes innocent Muslims, just driving down the road with some fireworks in the truck to light off at a picnic." I assumed at least some guilt on their part, mainly because they both are wearing beards. Beards on Muslim men signal fundamentalism. Of the newer details of the story, it was stated that they had chemicals to 'make' fireworks. Are they in the profession? I have been around back yard firework displays many times. I have never known anyone to 'make' their own. What of the FBI? Is this another case that they will fumble? Yes, it is strange, as Billyoblog noted, that Drudge never carried the story.

Meanwhile in Canukistan, IED mines "deliberated rigged" in rural Ontario creek where kids play;

Landmines found in London, Ont. creek: Two landmines found by a creek outside London popular with local kids were deliberately rigged and placed where they were found, experts say. Bill Rawling, a former Canadian Forces reservist and military historian, says anti-tank mines that are filled with explosive material -- as is suspected with the two found between Strathroy and Mount Brydges -- don't float. That would suggest somebody's tampered with the weapons. Rawling also says it was strange that the landmines had what police thought were timers on them. "I've never seen or heard of that before," said Rawling, of Ottawa. "That's usually a sign that it's an improvised device."

In Canada we had Dr.Sheema Khan from CAIR ( employed by CAIR at that time) responding to the evidence that 2 illegal Sunni Muslim students from Pakistan with bogus ID and fake passports
were caught scouting the Pickering Nuclear Power plant Cool-water intake ducts from Lake Ontario , the 2 single male Muslims also took flying lessons that went over the Plant and they had blue-prints of Boeing Passenger planes posted on the walls of their shared apartment .

CAIR's answer was that "Lots of people take flying lessons" and "Lots of people go to the beach and don't get arrested" , and "Lots of people have taken the same lessons at the Flying School" .
Rather than admit to Canada's Right to remove Illegals that may be a threat to innocent civilians , Khan (aka Con-Job Khan) used this example to push CAIR's agenda for victimhood in the West by Islamophobia and Racial-Profiling to deport Muslims that had not broke the Law while in Canada.

Khan's statements were on a Gov.ca website for the Transcript archives that dealt with Islamophobia in the Post-911 era.
I guess Khan feels we are overly sensitive
about the 3000 civilians slaughtered by 19 Muslims all using the Quran and Muhammed to justify it , even when the Muslims themself claimed to do it for Allah's cause.

* Lots of people drive around with bombs in the truck and they don't get arrested, right Khan......it was racism just like Ahmed Ressam who was caught with bomb material in his car while trying to enter the USA to murder civilians at the LAX airport during New Year's 2000 .

You are right XRDC,
The days of the fbi moving in and taking over local investigations is over. The locals have a responsibility to their community as they generally live in these communities and are accountable to these communities. Let the fbi get involved with local law enforcement and they will be giving sensitivity training to the locals. Just as individual States are taking the immigration failure into their own hands, local law enforcement has a responsibility to the local citizens above and beyond their responsibility to the feds. Don’t let them push you around local law enforcement, if an attack occurs your heads will be the ones to roll not theirs. It is not as if local law enforcement hasn’t given them plenty of opportunity to do their jobs.

If they arent linked to al Qaeda, then they can not terrorists. Thats the way it is.

Every day 'really naive kids' blow themselves up to 'get laid'.

tgusa -

I had a discussion over the weekend with a local FBI agent in my area and I have had lengthy discussions with family members in local law enforcement.

I am convinced that FBI agents are either aloof or have their hands tied when it comes to muslim extremism. I am also convinced that we are going to lose many first responders in the event of another attack because the FBI doesn't communicate the threat well at all.

Fortunately, many officers DO listen to talk radio while on call so they are self-informed but not formally the way it should be. If my child's gradeschool was ever hijacked as in Beslan, our local law enforcement would NOT know how to deal with it. They just don't train for such scenarios and simply hope that it never happens.

-XRDC

Something really stinks here.
All sorts of conflicting reports.
Why would the FBI/Sherrifs,blow up evidence.
Can they not tell the difference between fireworks and explosives?
Maybe it is just the media, maybe the authorities, but one thing is certain,we are being played for dupes!

XRDC,
Simply incredible. We might as well all be operating at defcon 2 in our communities.
It is unacceptable that criminal immigrants are posing as students and preying on the local community. Who needs al kayda when we have college campuses right in the heart of our communities? Jihadism and immigration are linked and the feds are importing more potential islamists into the country. Individual States need to say no to educating immigrant islamists, the local communities need to call these college administrators on to the carpet and let them know that this is unacceptable. They need to be told to get a handle on the problem and that doesn’t mean sensitivity training. Otherwise it will be these administrators who end up in an 8 by 8 concrete cell.

As XRDC points out above, Richard Kolko seems to get around quite a bit.
I suspect that he wishes that he had one of those flashy things from the MIB movie, with which he could wipe the short-term memories of inconvenient witnesses.
While he waits for that technology to become available, he is being forced to use bizarre and confusing pronouncements in the hope of achieving the same result.
My brain does start to wobble whenever I read his name, but my memory seems ok, so i think it is not working - so far.

One more for Kolko:

The FBI responded to the collapsed bridge to offer assistance and conduct any investigation necessary. Although it is early in the investigation, we have no reason at this time to believe there is any nexus to terrorism. The Minneapolis office of the FBI has provided special agents, its Evidence Response Team, and support in the command post. Additional Evidence Response Team assistance is being sent from FBI offices in Chicago and San Antonio. "We will provide whatever resources we have available if requested by the NTSB or the State of Minnesota," said Special Agent Richard Kolko from Washington, D.C.

There are 27 cubic feet of concrete in a cubic yard. A cubic foot of concrete weighs about 150 pounds. Ten cubic yards of concrete are carried in a fully loaded concrete truck. That means that the concrete in a single truck weighs over forty thousand pounds. The truck itself weighs about 20,000 pounds. So, a fully-loaded concrete truck can weigh over 60,000 pounds. This is less than a semi-truck’s legal limit, which is 80,000 pounds. Truck loading on bridges is much higher than dead weight like stationary construction materials because trucks bounce and the bridge needs to react to the dynamic load. Bridges are designed to safely support lots and lots of moving trucks.

The all-knowing NTSB spokesman is releasing information that Progressive Contractors, Inc. was storing ‘tens of thousand of pounds’ of material on the bridge, suggesting that this may have been a contributing factor in the collapse.

Nobody knows what happened in Minnesota. But the NTSB pointing the finger at the contractor for storing a small amount of construction material, in front of the rolling cameras, is stinky stinky from the standpoint of an objective analysis.

----------

Let me give you a little hint there, Kolko, if you and your department want to be taken seriously.

Stop having your agency put out there asap whenever something happens that something ISN'T a terrorist threat or a plot when you are still *early* in the investigation. Good grief that is common sense..what other common sense things are you guys missing if you can't understand that concept? While the loons on the left are stupid, not all of the public is in that category so don't shine us on.

haha fireworks...that is rich.

Have you seen this article about the terrorist threats (written in red ink) that were sent to Goldman Sachs?

Teens behind terror 'hoax,' sez new letter

One has to wonder why it is that CAIR officials like Ahmed Bedier always jump to the defense of a Muslim instead of their country in situations like this. They do it every time.

It would be far more normal for a patriotic person to be more concerned with the safety of America and her citizens than with those who might be a threat to them.

A statement to the effect that "CAIR is deeply concerned about the safety of our country, and feels that all situations of this kind should be thoroughly investigated to determine if these young men posed a danger to others and to our country.
It is entirely possible that these young men are innocent of any wrong doing, in which case, an investigation by the FBI will exonerate them. For their sakes, and the sakes of their families, we hope that is the case.
If, however, it can be determined that these men intended to do harm to others and to the United States, they should be prosecuted to the full entent of the law.
If these men were speeding at 60 miles- per- hour in a 45 mile-per-hour speed zone, the State police did exactly what we would expect them to do by stopping them, and can see no reason to suggest that their ethnic or religious backgrounds have any part to play in this."

CAIR'S Knee-jerk defense of suspects in cases like this should raise suspicions of just where their loyalities lay -- with Islam or the United States. If it's to the United States, their behavior is not normal.

In my local newspaper today, the Goose Creek
story, buried inconspicuously (its source: "compiled from wire services") and recounted with extreme brevity, never uses the word "Muslim" in describing the suspects. Rather, they are identified merely as "men." Thus, it is reported that two "men" were detained after police found a suspicious item in their car during a routine stop in Charleston, SC.
When will this insanity stop? Muslims are the enemy. (All right - not all Muslims. But many, many Muslims.) And the dhimmi fools, who scramble to hide this incontestable and increasingly obvious fact, are aiding and abetting the waging of global jihad.

More fireworks, Canadian style.
“A country creek where children swim, fish and frolic was instead swarmed by police yesterday as Canadian Forces explosives experts detonated two live landmines.”
Snidely Whiplash or the usual suspects? That’s right, I believe that men are somehow behind this despicable act.
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2007/08/05/pf-4394957.html
They may point fingers at us and talk big about attacking Military installations but their preferred target remains the same, shoppers, students, pedestrians, picnicers, and don’t forget cab fares and airline passengers.

"An Islamic community leader from Tampa, Fla., who’s been in touch with the families of the two detained college students, told The Post and Courier that Megahed and Mohamed are not troublemakers and that they a were simply on a weekend trip to North Carolina."

Hmmm--this is very curious. If they were on a trip to NC, why on earth were they stopping off in Charleston, SC??? It is not directly off I-95. Moreover, if they were visiting someone in Charleston, why were they on Hwy 176 which, as far as I can recall from years spent living in that area, is not a direct route to NC???

Several years back I heard tale of an Islamic man in Charleston running a scam whereby he gave local residents cash in exchange for government subsized items like infant formula as well as WIC coupons and foodstamps. He then sold these items elsewhere. The trucks used to pick up the contraband always had Florida tags. Wonder if there is a connection????????

commonsense

The same article your paper used was probably the AP article I noticed buried in the back of my local rag. AP articles like that are just used as filler and are usually trusted and used verbatim. Lazy liberal editors.

This story is full of bullshit! ! In South Carolina you can purchase ANY kind of ready made firework made in this world. Cheap, too. These two assholes had ingredients that may be used to make rockets similar to the ones dropping on Israel each and every day. There has to be more than simple hi-jinks on these guys part. When caught, all Arabs are only simple innocent boys. But given a chance, they turn into killing bastards . People, beware! !

Of course if you go to the news report from the Charleston newspaper (Post and Courier), it says something about pipe bombs....And the above poster is absolutely correct--there is no end to the variety and type of fireworks one can buy in SC at any time of the year!!!!!!!!!! There is no need to make your own.....

Have to agree with two posters above: you can buy any type of fireworks in SC. There are huge fireworks stores off the interstates with every kind of rocket, sparkler, firecracker, --you name it. There is no need for anyone to collect the materials to make fireworks unless they're doing it as a creative challenge.

Aren't fireworks unislamic? I've never seen any fireworks displays in Mecca, or anywhere else in the no-fun islamic world. I'm sure allah would frown on non-lethal displays of firepower. He prefers bombs, bullets, blood, and bodies.

Yes, the A.P. is reporting that "several pipe bombs" were in the trunk of the car. This is from the arrest affidavits. See the Fox News story here:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,292278,00.html

"Mohamed, 24, said he made pipe bombs from items he bought at Wal-Mart, according to an affidavit with his arrest warrant."

And the F.B.I. approved blowing this evidence up??

How many foreign students drive around with homemade pipe bombs in the trunks of their cars?

This just gets weirder and weirder the more we learn about it.

In the story at the Fox News web site, the 2 students stated they were heading to a North Carolina beach to shoot off some fireworks for mohamed's birthday. To get to any of the North Carolina beaches they would have to take highway 17 North. They were not far from Highway 17 when they were pulled over. Perhapse they were on there way to NC to celebrate mohamed's birthday by "shooting off some fireworks", in other words, planting pipe bombs on a North Carolina beach. Just a thought.

Ya know, Jim-H, that's just what I was thinking. What better way to celebrate the birthday of a robbing, murderous, child molester than to plant pipe bombs on a beach where innocent families will probably be.

"Aren't fireworks unislamic?."

Posted by: Susanp

Well, here in the UK I personally know someone who swears his muslim neighbours used fireworks to "celebrate"....

he couldnt work out what all the noise was about....it was a September 11th.... what were they celebrating?
