BAGHDAD: Three suicide truck bombers hit members of an ancient religious sect in northwestern Iraq, killing at least 20 people and wounding 70, police said.All the blasts occurred about 8 p.m. in two residential areas primarily inhabited by Yazidis near the town of Qahataniya, 120 kilometers (75 miles) west of Mosul, Iraq's third-largest city, police and city officials said.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the attacks. But they bore the hallmark of al-Qaida in Iraq, which has been regrouping in the north of the country after being driven from safe havens in Anbar and Diyala provinces.
Yazidis — a primarily Kurdish sect that worships an angel figure considered to be the devil by some Muslims and Christians — have been the frequent target of violence in northern Iraq, particularly in areas surrounding Mosul, 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of Baghdad.
The stoning death in April of a Yazidi teenager who had recently converted to Islam after she fell in love with a Muslim and ran off with him appears to have triggered some of the worst attacks. Police said 18-year-old Duaa Khalil Aswad was killed by relatives who disapproved of the match.
A grainy video showing gruesome scenes of the woman's killing was later distributed on Iraqi Web sites, but its authenticity could not be independently verified.
Two weeks later, gunmen shot and killed 23 Yazidis execution-style after stopping their bus and separating out followers of other faiths after checking their identification cards in what was believed to have been retaliation for the woman's death.
The bodies of two Yazidi men who had been stoned to death also turned up in the morgue in the northern city of Kirkuk on Tuesday, six days after they had been kidnapped while they were en route to Baghdad to sell olives, police said.
Police Brig. Gen. Sarhat Qadir and a Sunni tribal leader said Akbar Hassan, 38, and Ayad Khadir, 50, had been kidnapped by al-Qaida-linked insurgents who took them to the predominantly Sunni village of al-Saeeda and ordered the residents to stone them because they were "infidels." The villagers refused, so the insurgents killed the men themselves, Qadir said.
Sheik Ismael al-Hadidi, a Sunni tribal leader in Kirkuk, said about 40 gunmen had distributed fliers signed by the al-Qaida front group the Islamic State of Iraq in the village saying that the killing of the two Yazidi men was in retaliation for the killing of the Yazidi woman in April.
The bodies were left outside for 24 hours before being buried because the villagers were afraid of the gunmen. But some villagers later told al-Hadidi, who informed the family of the slain men, who lived near Mosul.
"By this savage act, the insurgents wanted to win the support and the sympathy of the Sunni residents of al-Saeeda village, but the Sunni villagers' refusal to participate in the stoning shows that those insurgents have failed and they are unpopular," al-Hadidi said.
Relatives traveled to Kirkuk but were afraid to go to the village, so five police cars were sent to retrieve the bodies, al-Hadidi said.
"This is a criminal act carried out by cowards who want to exploit the story of the slain Yazidi woman," one of them, 44-year-old Sami Benda, said. "The two men killed were only peasants who were planning to sell their crops in Baghdad, they have nothing to do with political and religious disputes. We are still paying the price of a foolish, wrong act conducted by small number of Yazidis who stoned the woman."

I hope that members of the media who understand what is truly going on, as far as Islam is concerned, will hightlight this tragic news. This horrible incident illustrates that many Muslims are at war with anyone not Muslim. The MSM wants the story to be between Islam and 'right-wing Christians' or Muslims vs Jews supporting the 'evil, oppressive' Israeli government.

Maybe this particular Sunni village had some previous positive relationship with the neighboring Yazidi/Kurdish village. Maybe these villagers knew these particular hostages. Maybe these villagers didn't want to start a blood feud with the Yazidi/Kurds. Maybe these villagers are anti-Western and anti-Yazidi, but don't happen to belong to the same sect as the Al Qaeda supporters and refuse to follow their instructions. Who knows?
But to assume that therefore these villagers are anti-Al Qaeda, anti-jihad, pro-Western, pro-democracy, etc. is just plain idiotic. This is the sort of naive faulty thinking that has gotten us mired in the millenia-old intra-Islamic sectarian infighting in Iraq in the first place.

Haven't we been told that one reason for the continued violence is that almost every family in Iraq owns firearms? If these insurgents are that unpopular why wouldn't the Sunni villagers not only refuse to participate in the stoning but then turn around and kill the insurgents? It would seem that the insurgents' willingness to harm other Muslims would remove from them any protection accorded by Islamic law.
The insurgents might have superior weaponry but the villagers would have strength in numbers.
This also raises the question of whose Islam will rule Iraq? Will Sunnis accept Shia rule and will they tolerate "idol worship" that is part of the Shia interpretation? Being a Muslim isn't sufficient protection. You need to be the right kind of Muslim or else remain under threat.
I remember watching the stoning in bits and pieces from some videos taken on a cell phone. It was horrific to see what these people did to that poor teenaged girl. It was something like 1000 to 1, i.e., 1000 big strong men to one little girl. The howling that went on while they diligently put this poor kid to death was beyond disturbing. Someone of these brave men had pulled this kid's pants off and she was down to her panties and a long sleeved shirt or sweater. The men kept lobbing the stones at her and she rolled around to try and get away but then would go incoherent as the life was ebbing out of her. The most enduring and, I think, ludicrous image I remember is that as they were destroying this poor, pathetic looking human being, someone went and covered up her bottom with a pillowcase or something. I don't remember what it was but I do remember that I thought it was ironic that the main thing this guy was concerned about was that they hadn't thought it through when they pulled her pants off, thought better of it and realized it was not appropriate to have her bare legs showing. But it sure wasn't inappropriate for her family to lie to her to get her to come back to the village and then let 1000 men kill her.
Sad, very sad...but we shouldn't be too surprised either.

I have a positive attitude towards the Yazidis. I would very much like to see their culture de-islamized, rid of all the venal behaviours that are a by-product of too primitive a tribal worldview (which is reinforced as they imbibe the surrounding Islamic culture), and for them to be welcomed to become citizens in the West, as I believe Robert has suggested ought to happen for the Assyrian Christians and the Mandaeans. The question of whether the West can import and accommodate Iraqi Yazidis will go a long way to helping us determine the extent to which Islamic perspectives and imperatives have been assimilated by non-Islamic peoples from the Muslim world. I understand that there is hope to raise consciousness among Berbers, and secular Kurds; but what about the Yazidis, who may yet be adversaries of the West although their religion apparently has only superficialities in common with Islam (they worship Malak Ta’us, the Peacock Angel, and regard him as God’s partner, which in Islamic terms makes them rank mushrikun, though they are monotheists)? Are they too wedded to Islamic norms, Islamic mindsets, Islamic “attitudes and atmospherics”? It’s an open question.

Also, one thing I appreciate about this site is its ecumenism. I’m strongly in favour of building a broad coalition of ALL those threatened by jihad, encompassing not just Christians, Jews and freethinkers but also Dharmic peoples (Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs) and members of small faiths that have been brought to their knees by Islamic cruelty, but who we seldom read about in the West: African and Asian tribals, Taoists and Confucians, John the Baptist-revering Mandaeans, the noble Baha’is (a wonderful group of post-Islamic monotheists who prophesy world unity), and the much-beleaguered Zoroastrians. It is DISGUSTING that the mainstream media never cares to report on these incidents. These people deserve our protection and support, and their spokespeople in the West ought to know they have it. The more we document the injustices they have suffered, the better we can make a claim to the anti-jihad struggle as a universal movement based in human dignity. More active participation by non-Abrahamic peoples in the anti-jihad struggle will be a good thing, especially if they do not espouse supremacist ideologies of their own (e.g. Hindutva or Sikh extremism.) Meanwhile, the Left is so quick to valorize Muslims as “exotic” and “oppressed” people of colour that it doesn’t care to recognize the REAL oppressed minorities, by no means all of them Christian or Jewish, suffering under the Islamic yoke.

The minorities in Iraq need to be fast-tracked for immigration to Western countries if they so wish. We have a moral duty (if not a strategic one) to help them survive. Their numbers preclude them being militarily useful and Washington cynic will always bring up the excuse that it is not in our interest. But their presence among a newly radicalized Islamic society is a cause of instability.
The United States cannot afford instability in the Middle East. It is the source of its energy supply. The oil supply needs to be secured and instability quelled.
