BAGHDAD - A sniper killed a Shiite pilgrim on a Baghdad bridge Monday while another was killed and six injured in other attacks as tens of thousands of faithful made their way to the southern city of Karbala for a major religious commemoration.

Iraqi security forces have mounted a major operation to protect Shiite pilgrims. Sunni religious extremists, including al-Qaida in Iraq, have launched massive and deadly attacks against pilgrims during Shiite celebrations in the past.
Despite the security measures, one pilgrim was shot on Baghdad's Jadiriyah bridge and gunmen hiding in an orchard south of the capital opened fire on another group, killing one and injuring three others.
Three more pilgrims were injured when gunmen blasted them in a drive-by shooting in southwestern Baghdad and police prevented another attack, defusing two roadside bombs planted along the route to Karbala in Musayyib, about 40 miles south of Baghdad, officials said.
More than a million Shiites from throughout the world were expected to converge on the Shiite holy city for the celebrations, which reach their high point late Tuesday and early Wednesday. The Shabaniyah festival marks the birth of Mohammed al-Mahdi, the 12th and last Shiite imam who disappeared in the 9th century.

David Rising you get an F in journalism. Why do you say "extremists" target Iraqi pilgrims? Surely this was just done by a devout Moslem. How do you know he is an extremist? Are you putting a value judgment on the act, thereby saying only an "extremist" would snipe and murder innocent civilians or infidels. Where have you been for the last 45 years? Is this your first visit to Baghdad. Tell us the part how the U.S. is responsible for this moslem and moslem murder and how the murder by a moslem of another moslem gets charged against the Yank account. Tell us the part that it was done by an extremist because islam is a religion of peace.
reminds me of the sectarian slayings that occur all over the West during our religious holidays as all religions are alike

Maybe these "extremists" would benefit from taking up a hobby (other than killing people) so that they would have something better to do than brood over ancient history (and perpetually murder one another as a result of such brooding)...
I don't understand all these "pilgramages" for muslim holidays.
Can't these people just stay home and have a BBQ in the back yard or maybe a turkey with all the fixins (out of religious sensitivity I won't suggest a glazed ham) like everyone else? Or just go "over the river and through the desert to grandmothers house. . ." for food, drinks and fun? Why do they have to travel some place where people want to kill them?
It's just traveling long ways to beat themselves over the head with a sword, or throw rocks at a meteor rock (followed by a stampede), or starve themselves for a month. They never seem to have any fun at their holiday celebrations.
Maybe that's why they hate us, we have too much fun during the holidays.
Just think of these snipers as soon to be new contributants to the 50 average jihadis killed or captured each day in Iraq.
Just need to keep culling the gene pool.

...because MO said to...besides MO's descendants now own the porto pottie stalls, the Qur'an bookstore, the booth selling MO teeshirts, and MO sandals, the Burka/Niqab stall, the Bush effigy kiosk, the lastest dvds showing exciting action showing the IEDs blowing up some truck or bus, and the kiosk with photos of the Burka Beauty contest (actually there are no losers here), and the kiost selling real Muslim oil in a 12 oz can....it is all about the money and besides Muslims do not care about death.....

What happens when Islam rules the world (perish the thought - just a hypothetical!)? Will dhimmis be killed if they convert to the wrong sect?
Will the Saudis turn their attention from the West to Iran (it was once a Sunni nation) and the Shiites in all countries? Being Muslim won't be enough, you'll have to be the right kind of Muslim.

These Shi'ites seem to have more holy days, holy shrines, and holy cities than you can shake a stick at It seems that every week there's an attack on another "holy" place. Why are all these places holy, and who are the shrines dedicated to? Isn't islam supposed to be monotheistic? Do the Sunnis have all these holy places?

...probably not, but they have probably paid for most of them....Sunnis provide the Money, Shi'ites provide the suicide bombers...they are partners with an unwritten agreement....
