Taliban fanatics have been making "hate calls" to the UK homes and relatives of soldiers serving in Afghanistan.Senior commanders believe they get the numbers either by monitoring troops' mobile phone calls or from staff at Afghan phone companies.
The wife of one RAF officer was told: "You'll never see your husband alive - we have just killed him."
It was some hours before officials could confirm that her husband was still safe and well. All troops serving in southern Afghanistan have now been banned from carrying mobile phones.
Soldiers in Iraq can keep their phones but have been warned to keep their use to a minimum.
A senior Army source said the use of mobile phones by troops presented "a huge security problem".
It was feared the Taliban had access to both telephone numbers and the content of conversations.

Elric, I don't think they're getting any help. A lot of them are educated in the west, and they're no dummies, no matter what I may think of their religion. The internet and cell phones etc. help them immensely, for recruitment and passing info. They've once again bastardized something helpful into something destructive.

You may be right. I do know they arent stupid but thought they might need big help in doing that. Im not tech savy in that regard. I dont know how easy it is to tap cell phones and actually get numbers off them.
They go0t the equipment to monitor,track, etc calls and other communications from their 5th columnists in the west (here's it's a felony to do this), but it's also the same folks who got access to security software in order to comlink to, and taunt, Air Force One on 9/11...same folks.
Some of those same folks are still aloowed to work in the US, are computer savvy (silicon valley is infested with them), and some are even suspected of being in the employ of the military, either directly, or by corporate contract...

Fighting a psychological war against psychos like the muslims could be very rewarding. Oh, I'm not talking about dipping bullits in pigs' blood, or starting rumors, but those could be done.
Don't forget we are fighting a war against civilians and sharing a barracks with the enemy. Anything that would freak an al-qaeda out would be upsetting to our "allies" as well.
I don't think this war was well planned. We still have to win it, and those who hate "all types of religious extremists" better get over it. I don't care for self-serving, immoral pagans, but I'll fight the sharia takeover with them.

If we hadn't provided Iraq with cellphone towers and signals, no cellphones could be used to detonate IED's, so control of technology is essential in wartime.

Okay, the jihadists got ahold of the phone records in Afghanistan. It seems that goes both ways: it should be possible to use the phone records to find the people who are making these phone calls. Let the RAF soldiers pay them a visit, and pass on their families' regards.
The same thing is happening to the families of Danish soldiers currently or formerly in Iraq. I'm surprised though that the same thing is happening in both Afghanistan and Iraq, and that both have been reported within a week of eachother. Is it perhaps something they've started doing recently?
