The hijacking did end peacefully with all the hijackers surrendering to authorities.Turkish officials said the hijackers were a Turk, Mehmet Ozlu, and a Syrian national, Muhammad Asis Maliki, who initially had been identified in media reports as a Palestinian.
The hijackers were immediately arrested after their surrender, with the motive for the hijacking unclear. Passengers who had been freed earlier on said the two men had claimed to be members of the terror network Al Qaeda.
The two men were armed with a knife, while also claiming to have a bomb. They did not succeed in entering the plane’s cockpit.
The hijackers had demanded that the plane be flown to Teheran, but instead it landed at the southern Turkish coastal city of Antalya with the pilot telling them he did not have enough fuel to reach the Iranian capital.
The pilot was then able to escape the plane successfully, leaving the plane pilotless on the ground.
