TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran's judiciary on Tuesday for the first time confirmed that two Iranian Kurdish journalists have been sentenced to death for being "enemies of God."Rights groups had reported that Adnan Hassanpour and Abdolvahed "Hiva" Botimar were sentenced to death on July 16 by a revolutionary court in Marivan, in Iran's northeastern Kordestan province.
"Botimar and Hassanpour have been sentenced to hanging on the charge of being mohareb," judiciary spokesman Ali Reza Jamshidi told reporters, using a Koranic legal term that is usually translated as "enemy of God."
According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the two journalists wrote for the magazine Aso (Horizons), before it was banned in August 2005.
Hassanpour published several articles on local politics and gave interviews to foreign media including Voice of America while Botimar was also a member of the environmental NGO Sabzchia, RSF said.
It said that at Hassanpour's closed door trial, he was found guilty of "activities subverting national security" and "spying," while his interviews for Voice of America were also cited by the prosecution.
Iran is indeed the guiding light for human rights in the Islamic world.

Do we have any Sunnis out protesting in the streets about this? No!!
Sunni/Shiite? what does it matter? The barbaric mentality is never far below the surface in any man but in Muslims it just seems so much closer to the surface. And I mean ALL muslims as if they fail to demonstrate about this sort of thing then they condone it as after all, it is bound to be justified by some idiotic sura in the Koran.
Muslims have it good. They get to decide their god's intent and will here on Earth. They also have permission to judge a person based on partial information and then have carte blanche on whether to pass sentence for execution or not.
Islam empowers every muslim to be jury, judge and executioner based on the perceptions of each individual. No wonder it's attractive to many marginal souls -- it gives the power of a god to mere mortals at their convenience.
There may be some hope for these two men. After all, they are Muslims. Western liberals might try to protest, put together a campaign in support of them. On the other hand, if these two men were Assyrian reporters or reporters from the Bahi'a faith, forget it. They would be considered non-Muslim trouble makers, and not worth the outside world's efforts.
Sure glad the Bush team has decided to have direct talks with these psychopathic, retrograde theocratic lunatics.

Sounds like muslims have a lack of faith if they believe their entity would have enemies. Logic would dictate that all-powerful beings whould not have enemies. Islam: the cult of no logic.

All media and government will, and have, bowed to Islam - down to the ground! No one anywhere will go all the way towards pointing out that those religions which use the Koran are evil and murderous mainstream religions - so evil and murderous, that they alone stand as one of a kind in all the world - all other religions are good in comparison. But Islam is praised by all the media - or at least not identified as a "religion" leaving the impression that what is evil are people, and not the RELIGION. How does Islam accomplish this? Simple, it murders anyone who tell the truth about it! So, everyone respects the Muslims (respect is another word for fear). The criticisms against the Muslims is alway persecuted to the extreme of western Law, even breaking that law - yet these same indignities thrown at other religions are allowed because no one respects them because they will not murder you and you family for expressing them. See how good fear of murder works to make a ridiculous Religion of Murder into a "respectable institution that the heads of all governments bend and kiss the raised posteriors in homage to the great gift of not being Murdered as the Koran commands!

This is so depressing. I feel so sorry for those men and their families.
When I was young, I thought that Canada, the U.S. and other democracies were the norm. Now I'm starting to feel as if we're the exception to the (mob) rule.
How very sad. This sounds like a scary novel about a totalitarian society that aspires to rule the world, with the harshest penalties for just the thought of freedom.

It's sad to see journalists in free lands not make this a bigger deal than what has been posted about it so far. I guess it's kind of the same thing as when the women's groups are silent about FGM.
Highrise - today's journalists are products of education of the last thirty years: multi-culturalism, relativism, and secularism. They are also intimidated by CAIR, and by examples of Islamo justice for journalists, such as Danny Pearl, and the two guys who were freed in Gaza on their promise to be Muslims (never heard of them again), and others. They are intimidated when an Oriana Fallaci can be brought into court for telling the truth about this fanatical evil.
What about the professional organizations of journalists? - Silence on Islam and its "justice".
We in America have an increasingly warped justice system where CAIR/ACLU in a conspiracy with liberal judges use our Constitution to actually destroy its principal tenets, the most important of which is free speech, totally free speech, particularly on politics and on religion.
Free speech on politics and religion was the rock foundation of the American experiment, and these guys are eating away at it as we go about our daily business, shopping, the beach, etc.
We used to have a vigilant "Fourth Estate" that first of all defended the country against its enemies. We now have a complete flip-flop in the orientation of the "Fourth Estate" - aiding and abetting the enemy will get you a promotion at the NY Times and similar rags.
With the press and the TV media in the hands of dhimmis the nation is being force-fed Islamic pabulum - the Islamists are feeding the media the "Mecca verses" - Islam is all sweetness and light - whereas they practice the "Medina verses" - in which Islam is a fanatical tribal culture enamored with death.
There is a great need for courageous journalists and a great need to impeach judges who conspire to trash the First Amendment so that journalists can indeed use it as it was intended.
