KABUL - Afghanistan’s parliament demanded Saturday that US-led forces apologise for distributing footballs that carried Koranic verses and have been labelled insulting to Islam.
The US-led military coalition late last month dropped toys, including soccer balls, into the eastern province of Khost as part of a goodwill gesture aimed at winning over support from the local population.
The balls showed the flags of several nations, including the Saudi standard, which bears the verses.
‘The people’s representatives want them (US-led forces) to formally apologise out of respect for public opinion and sentiment,’ the conservative parliament said in a statement that was voted for by most MPs.
‘We, representing the people of Afghanistan, want our friendly forces to respect the culture and tradition of people in their activities.’
About 100 people demonstrated after the balls were dropped into Khost by helicopters, saying they were an insult to their religion.
The US-led coalition expressed regret for causing unhappiness.
Deeply Islamic Afghanistan is sensitive to slights on Islam. Last year there were days of sometimes deadly protests about cartoons printed in Europe that were deemed to insult the Prophet Mohammed.

It is only by comparison with Tarbaby Iraq that the attempt in Afghanistan to "rebuild" the country (it was never built in the first place), to provide "prosperity" -- a chicken in every pot, forty acres and a mule, a Ford-T outside every house, you name it -- to the locals, to do, in short, everything for those Muslim locals except the one thing that might improve their lives, in the long run, and our lives too -- to diminish the political and social power of Islam, to cause Afghans to begin to resent Islam as the vehicle of Arab supremacism, entirely indifferent to non-Arab histories and cultures, and ultimately, to recognize that the political, economic, social, moral, and intellectual failures of their society is a direct result of Islam -- and if that is not cured, all of the aid poured into the bottomless pit of this or that Musliim society by the limitlessly naive and hopeful Infidels, who keep thinking that eventually, somehow, they can make this Islamic society work, and allow for real, not false democracy, and for real economies, not dependent on undeserved manna, whether that manna be the oil of the OPEC countries, or the manna -- the disguised Jizyah -- from the Infidel lands that seem paralyzed and unable to understand that they must change their view of Islam, and stop adding to the amounts already being transferred, because of oil and gas, to the Muslim states by the non-Muslim ones.
Western troops over the horizon (Kazakhstan? India?) can intervene from time to time when they deem it necessary. They can support this or that group of locals to fight other groups of locals. They should not be building any infrastructure -- highways, or information super-highways. Afghan villagers who are subsistence farmers will be less amenable to the lure of Jihad, and less capable of participating in it. It is poverty, not plenty, that makes them less of a threat. It is their lack of access to the outside world, through satellite television and the Internet, that makes them less of a threat, say, than the rich Arabs and Iranians, or others who, though not rich, have access to such Western technology and to the Islamic propaganda disseminated by such technology.
Afgnhanistan is a tiny tarbaby, Iraq a big one. But both are tarbabies.

Emagine our Congress passing a resolution itimizing the incredible number of evil verses in the Koran, or demanding that Islamic countries desist from persecuting Christians and other faiths in their countries, and grant all people, including women, equal rights under the law.
On the contrary, if out Congress passed any resolution, it would be to praise Islam for its high moral character, and contributions to human rights and world peace.

After the posed, staged or outright Photoshopped scenes in the Lebanon War of the summer 2006, and after seeing photos of Pretendestinian kids throwing eggs at demonstrations (in supposedly "staaaaarving!" Gaza), I take all their outward shows as poses unless I have very good evidence to the contrary.
