BEIRUT, Lebanon - An explosion rocked a Christian suburb east of the Lebanese capital Wednesday, but the cause was not immediately known, a senior Lebanese security official said.It was not known if there were any casualties.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, said the explosion occurred in the Sin el-Fil district.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A car bomb killed an anti-Syrian Lebanese lawmaker and at least six other people in Beirut on Wednesday, just six days before parliament was due to elect a new president, security sources said.The lawmaker, Antoine Ghanem of the Christian Phalange party, was killed by the blast in a Christian district of the Lebanese capital. At least 19 other people were wounded by the bomb in the busy commercial and residential area of Sin el-Fil.
Several cars were set ablaze and rescue workers carried bodies from the scene in eastern Beirut.
Ghanem, 64, was a member of the anti-Syrian governing coalition which has been locked in a power struggle since November with factions backed by Damascus.

I don't know why any Christians are left in Beirut. My brother's in-laws left in 1969, before the "Christian annihilation" began, and said it was not easy to immigrate, and even more difficuly now (unless you were a member of Hezbollah during the summer of 2006).
These people are Maronite Catholics who can trace their ancestry in that region for >600 years. St. Louis is loaded with Lebanese Christians, and they, along with some Serbs, Armenians, and Orthodox Jews were the only ones to protest the mega-mosque being built here.
