Now that Gwen Stefani is "practically Malaysian," why not?
From Agence France-Presse (thanks to JE):
JUST weeks after US singer Gwen Stefani covered up for a concert in Malaysia amid a furore over revealing outfits, her compatriot Beyonce is facing similar calls, Malayasian media says.Beyonce is due to play Muslim-majority Malaysia in November, but will have to tone down her midriff-flaunting tops and thigh-skimming skirts, the New Straits Times newspaper reported.
It quoted concert organiser Razlan Ahmad Razali, who said that the singer would show less flesh than usual.
"As of now, her concert is still on," he told the newspaper.
Stefani performed in Kuala Lumpur on August 21 despite protests from an Islamic students' group which objected to her raunchy performances and outfits.
The platinum-blonde pop star made true to her promise to be a "good girl" and covered her tight-fitting tops in jackets.
She also sported leggings under her dresses and mini-skirts.
"I am practically Malaysian," Stefani told 10,000 screaming fans, including Muslim mothers in traditional headdress toting their young daughters.
Maybe I should say that Islam is an envasive ideology that takes root fast and hard? Better?
"I am practically Malaysian," so says Ms. Stefani. Practically, but not quite there. We will know that Ms. Stefani has completely crossed into Muslim-land (Malaysia) when she has quit her singing career, is at home full-time, with a baby in her arms and another one on the way, in full Muslim attire, without makeup except two black eyes, compliments of her Muslim husband.
The next time one of these air headed performers complains about corporate greed, they should be reminded of their willingness to sacrifice their freedom in order to sell tickets, and make money. They make me sick.
Living proof that musical talent does not equal intellegence.
I recall attending a Fifth Dimension concert in 1971, and the most expensive ticket was seven dollars. Concert tickets have incrased way beyond inflation - performers' greed.
"Bootylicious": Now there's what Amazon would call an SIP, or statistically improbable phrase (or term).

Just like kudzu.
I've never liked Gwen Stefani. Now I have a solid reason. "I'm practically Malaysian" has got to be one of the most idiotic pronouncements ever uttered. And, yeah, how mercenary can you get?
Also, they allowed her to sing those lyrics, yet cover up? How 100% hypocritical are Mohammedans.
R.I.P. Secular Malaysia. We hardly knew ye.
Beyonce K. should tell them:
You don't like the booty, you don't get the licious.
One more example of the lunatic anhedonia of Islam.
Although the singers are conforming to the host country's dress codes, can it be considered a positive thing that at least the locals are permitted to attend their concerts and, possibly, buy their CDs? Might it be a positive thing that the locals are exposed to this type of Western cultural product?
I'm asking because I'm not sure what I think about this type of situation.
I'm thinking about the positive influence that Western books had on Ayaan Hirsi Ali, according to her book, "Infidel".
Of course, it is religious censorship and the host countries are demanding that the singers conform to the rules of a religion that they do not follow, and that is not good.

The U.S. Senate Project (an initiative to increase congressional awareness of the nature and goals of jihad) currently has 74 volunteers in 36 states.
WE ARE STILL SEEKING ADDITIONAL CITIZEN VOLUNTEERS FROM ALL 50 STATES, ESPECIALLY THE FOLLOWING 14:
Connecticut
Delaware
Hawaii
Kansas
Louisiana
Mississippi
Montana
North Dakota
Oklahoma
South Dakota
Utah
Vermont
West Virginia
Wyoming
The Project: We're looking for people in every state of the Union who would be willing to purchase, from Amazon or any other source, a copy of Robert Spencer's Religion of Peace? Why Christianity Is and Islam Isn't and mail it, on an agreed upon date, to one of the senators in your state. We want to get the book simultaneously to all 100 senators, in order to send a strong message. If we get more than two people per state, books can also be sent to the U.S. House of Representatives.
If you’d like to be involved, please write to me at traehnam@yahoo.com under the subject heading “Senate,” and tell me the state your senator represents, an email address where I can reach you, and a nickname. No need for your real name. And I will never share your email address with anyone, not even with other volunteers for this project.
And visit www.jihadawareness.blogspot.com to get more info on this project and to leave comments other volunteers can read. You can also see there the growing list of participants in this project, and the states their senators represent. I've also designed a graphic that might amuse. Scroll down when you get to the site.
Once we have at least two people from every state, we can agree on a mailing date and then each of us can mail a copy of the book on that date.
Right before each of us mails the book, we can issue a press release to various media outlets in every state, and in that way announce and explain the mailing. And perhaps we can come up with some other ways of maximizing the effectiveness of this project and gaining as much positive attention as possible.
Congress is in recess until after Labor Day. But one of the project's volunteers suggested contacting Rep. Sue Myrick, who started the Anti-Jihad Caucus in Congress. I'll try to coordinate this project with Rep. Myrick to maximize its effectiveness. I've also been calling various congressional offices to get advice on how best to go about the project.
"Bootylicious" Beyonce?
Got me laughing out here. (Oh, she is bootylicious, but for some reason that headline got me laughing.)
i think i agree with Josephine, in that i am not sure either.
Stefani conformed to her degree, but her Malaysian fans were, by being her fans, non-conforming to a dangerous degree. that kind of situation can get riot police itching to use their batons on bad girls. so, if it all went off without violence and everyone had a good time (apart from the "Islamic students") i don't think much harm was done. it is only pop music, after all.
ps i have always had a soft spot for Stefani, i think it is because she has a good voice, but it could be her nice posterior, i am not sure.
I'm almost Malaysian myself, of the English, Irish, French, German, Dutch variety, with some Red Indian thrown in for good measure. I also have a fifth of Scotch in me. That's the part I like best...
Criticism should depend on the extent to which Stefani and Beyonce pushed the envelope or stayed within it. If they pushed it a little -- and their sheer presence there arguably was pushing the envelope a little -- maybe they deserve some kudos.
Having lived in Malaysia, it is frustrating to see these episodes.
Malaysia is a country with religious and ethnic minorities that are these days under significant pressure by islamic fundamentalism that is changing the society. Still these minority people even under opression and pressure maintain their own culture and dignity. They refuse to display islamic symbols and dresses. And while being minorities thay represent significant group overall - almost half of the total population. Together with secular muslims they could even be majority.
Driving from Kuala Lumpur airport a mobile company advertises phone services for all Malaysians. And that billboard has such a great variety of people - none of them wearing islamic dress, scarve or tudong.
Then arrive western cultural icons, wearing headscarves and bowing to islamic fundamentalism, without any cultural pride.
I still vividly remember the newspaper frontpage with Alicia Keys arriving in Kuala Lumpur, head all covered of course. Such painful experience for all those opressed under the islamization and racial/religious apartheid system that is openly practiced in Malaysia.
Well,
As a feminist, I'm not surprised, look,
Stephani, lets not forget, is the woman who sings I'm no hollerback girl" which is reference to the women and girls in New York and other cities who are fighting back against street sexual harassment [in India this is also going on, especially on college campuses and buses where sexual assault is often the daily norm]. So you have here a woman making millions singing how she's not anti-harassment,
so surprised that for a 'buck' she caved in to misogyy and sexualization [be it forced covering up to project the reality of 'male ownership of chattel' in Islam or the baring of all in that projection of 'no self respect'] NO--not surprised at all,
and the Mentality is the same. Whether its the tolerance of abuse and degradation by Islamic misogyny or tolerance of self-abasement, it sends the same message: "I'm just a piece of meat put on earth to be screwed, beaten, demeaned, ridiculed, etc...just dress me up and throw on the jewels and treat me like a Christmas tree' type of thinking--I'm not human, just a 'sex thing'.
Its the same message, so pushing the envelope--no, not really, if Anything it just feeds into the 'lie' that women are mere sexual 'holes', nothing more, just baby makers.
Beyonce is no better, and lets be honest here,
both these women [and so many others in the music industry] are not known for their voice,
they are known for their T&A. Lets not kid ourselves, why we see more 'non talented' women/girls who can't sing, making it big in the big buck music 'soft porn' industry,
and the travesty is that we do have the freedom here Which is good, but women seriously do need to reflect upon the message they project,
you can't say, one on hand you want equal rights and respect as a human being and not as a sex object--then turn around and Act like nothing but a sex object then wonder why one isn't taken seriously. And the other travesty, is that this debasement is the Exact thing that many of the Isamists women point out about Western society which gives the Islamists the propaganda material to influence millions of young women worldwide.
I once read something about why many women in Islamist countries get angry at Western feminists and its that, for many, to proclaim the injustices then to be able to leave, go back to the free west while millions of women don't Have that choice--they have to adapt to living under the worst form of slavery there is--
for Stephani to stand there and say "I'm Malaysian" is the Worst insult to millions of women--because she is Not Malaysian nor is she oppressed as those women are--
she can get on the plane back to the US, back to LA, back to wearing her bare skinned designs and luxury lifestyle--while the Malaysian women go back to their day of daily living with
harassment, control, abuse, and the bleak reality that they will never have the freedom,
to stand, sheet free--and feel the wind in their hair. For those who do, they do so with great risk.
No Stephani, you are no Malaysian nor are you a Hollerback girl,
but you are, the reason women's rights, are going back five hundred years.
Shame on You.

"The next time one of these air headed performers complains about corporate greed, they should be reminded of their willingness to sacrifice their freedom in order to sell tickets, and make money. They make me sick." - from post #2
I am afraid they are sacrificing OUR freedom, not their own. They are showing to the fundamentalists that we can be made to follow dhimmi rules - for money, fear, coercion or otherwise.
I have lived in a totalitarian system where anything coming from the West was a breath of fresh air and an act of dissidence. It was so though, because even the official aims of our system were close to the aims of any Western society. We had very, very similar ideas of what progress is. None of those ideas included alah, world caliphate, sharia and other seventh century, epilepsy-induced anti-utopia. As disgusting as communism is, it is not as alien to civilization as islam is.
Bravo, Natasha.
I agree, these female singers and others like them, Britney Spears being the most infamous example, are examples muslims hold up to prove how debased and wicked and immoral the West is, and how pure and perfect islam is.
If these entertainers had a conscience, they would refuse to perform in muslim controlled countries, no matter how big the payoff. It's not like they need the money.
Natasha,
You nailed it...completely NAILED it.
They are lame for caving.
Natasha: Although there might be other meanings of a "hollaback" girl, one of them is the secondary cheerleader (a member of the pep squad) who yells back to the cheerleader. In other words, a hollaback girl is not a leader, is inferior. This has morphed into the idea that a "hollaback" girl settles things just by yelling; Stefani is saying she won't take insults and she'll solve them physically.
While I disagree with Stefani's culturaly cave-in, her song "Hollaback Girl" in no way implies that she supports the abuse of women.
Natasha:
You GO, GIRL. Hear, Hear!
Personally, I dont listen to her music, not my taste.
However if I did, I would give her the same treatment as the Dixie Chicks........
