Over 80,000 illegal weapons are believed to be in the hands of West Bank terrorists, according to the IDF's latest assessments of the ongoing power struggle between Hamas and Fatah.Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas may be facing serious threats his West Bank stronghold.
The weapons are mostly held in private homes or hidden in caches throughout Judea and Samaria.
According to the latest assessment, and contrary to earlier predictions, defense officials told The Jerusalem Post this week that Hamas was just as strong as Fatah in the West Bank and could pose a genuine threat to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's security forces.
On Monday, the London-based Al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper reported that Fatah security forces had recently thwarted an attempted coup in the PA by Hamas.
Hamas had tried establishing a military force in the West Bank similar to its Executive Force in the Gaza Strip, which then planned to attack PA institutions and take over the government, according to the report. "They have weapons and explosives and, more importantly, they are highly motivated," a senior defense official said.

Eight Arrested in Denmark
COPENHAGEN (AFP) - Danish police said Tuesday they had prevented a terrorist attack with the arrest overnight of eight men believed to be linked to Al-Qaeda and suspected of possessing bomb materials.
The director general of the Danish intelligence service PET, Jakob Scharf, said the arrests near Copenhagen had "prevented a terrorist attack."
"We would describe the main suspects as militant Islamists with international contacts, including leading members of Al-Qaeda," Scharf told a press conference.
Scharf would not disclose any information about the possible target of the planned attack, but said there was "no direct link" to Denmark's military involvement in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Police raided 11 homes in the early hours of Tuesday.
"We made our move now because we had gathered enough evidence to make an arrest, and because several of the suspects had created an unstable explosive in a densely populated housing area," he said.
"During the raids overnight and this morning we found a series of objects and materials that are important in this case," he added.
The eight, aged 19 to 28, were of foreign backgrounds from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Turkey, and six of the eight held Danish citizenship, Scharf said.
Two of the men were to be presented before a judge on Tuesday and could be placed in temporary detention.
The investigation had been underway for several months and PET had cooperated with foreign intelligence agencies, Scharf said.
"This is a serious case. A case which we have been investigating very intensively... A case which has required much of PET's resources, a case which has had high priority for us," he added.
This is the third time in two years Danish police have conducted operations resulting in the arrests of people suspected of preparing acts of terrorism.
In September 2006, PET arrested nine people after finding chemicals in a raid for explosives production.
Four young Muslims were indicted in the affair, accused of planning bomb attacks in Denmark or abroad. Their trial is to begin on Wednesday.
In October 2005, PET arrested a group of people accused of having helped two accomplices, a Swede of Serbian-Montenegrin orgin and a Turkish-born Dane, travel to Sarajevo to acquire explosives and weapons aimed at carrying out a terror attack in Europe.
So, what's the big deal? Those weapons were probably supplied by the USA and Israel to bolster Abbas sometime over the past few years.

A SWAT team has entered a Newington, Conn., synagogue in a stand-off situation.
Officers sent a police dog inside shortly before 7:30 a.m. and followed it into Congregation B'nai Sholom on Church Street. Police earlier had used a megaphone to ask the person or people inside to come out, and tossed an unknown object into the building.
The initial call was for a possible break-in. Heavily armed officers surrounded the synagogue, and New Britain police were called in to help.
Three dirt motorcycles were parked outside the building. A neighbor told WFSB-TV that the motorcycles were stolen from her shed.
Two schools near the synagogue delayed opening because of the stand-off.

Does anyone remember one of those old B grade science fiction movies. I used to love them. In Australia during the 80's one theatre used to show them and have comedians dubbing the movies live with relevant news of the day. They were hilarious.
One of my favorites was a movie about aliens invading the earth and presenting the world leaders with a book. After much work the earthlings managed to decipher the first line of the title of the book which was "How to serve Mankind". People were all excited.
The whole purpose of these Aliens was to serve mankind. Masses of people were flocking to the spaceship wanting to go with these wonderful creatures.
However, there were some nasty doomsters, who did not belleve that these aliens were benign. One of them was a cryptographer. Finally as the spaceships were leaving Earth with there willing cargo, he managed to decipher the second line of the title of the book. The full tittle was " How to serve mankind - a cookbook"- I wonder how the comedians would have dubbed this movie

The bums rush to get a Peace Treaty between the PA and Israel just sets the Stage. Once that happens Hamas is free to make the final move. The UN and the EU are bending over backwards to help Hamas despite Hamas's desire to destroy Israel(or because of it???).
It is alL Israel can do to put up with Hamas as it is. As tempting as it seems for Israel to act agressively in responce to provication. The longer term benefit may be letting the Palistinians kill each other off in the process of controling the "new State".
If the PA wins. They are diminished while being more inclined to "peace", alowing Israel to deal with other matters. If the PA just folds or Hamas wins would indicate either a pure sham or just plain unacceptable. Hamas's Charter is something everybody knows Israel will never accept. With Hamas in power, any pretence of "Peace" for Palastine flies right out the window.
Either the PA fights and dies for a free Palastine or there never will be one.
What I always wonder is why so many Palastinians have so little respect for how they put up with their surroundings, yet do nothing about it.

good one...here we used to have Mystery Science Theater, where the guests acted more like critics, talking all through the B movies...much like the peanut galleries of old. They were hilarious. The worst I ever saw was "Plan 9 from outer space"

The episode you're thinking of "To Serve Man" was from TheTwilightZone, early 60s, and the man who starred as the big alien was a one Richard Kiel, who later went onto fame as "Jaws" in the James Bond movies. That was an excellent one.
(I knew that as our family knows him personally, he lives just south of here in Clovis, California, long retired, and arthritis has him in such a bad way I feel awful for him...his size has taken its toll on him...actually one of the funniest guys I ever met. Classy and well spoken-a real honor to know him)
