Just before his glorious trip to the UN and Columbia University, during which he is sure to mesmerize his audience with a weird celestial light, just as he did last time, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad relaxes by watching a parade featuring banners that read al-mawt al-Amrika and al-mawt al-Israil -- Death to America and Death to Israel.
You can see, however, that they are rendered in English on the same banners as "Down with USA" and "Down with Esrail." (Thanks to LGF.)
I doubt anything too disruptive will happen at my alma mater. I mean, it's not like Dick Cheney is speaking there.
Of course not...brownshirts don't attack their brethren-in-arms like iminajihad- they'll just heckle anyone who dares confront him with real questions that aren't part of the carefully scripted masquerade. Nothing new there.

The Iranian regime is so transparent. Any English sign means "for consumption in the west". It is always obvious what they intend as propaganda. The mistranslation is pretty infantile. Do they think there are no Farsi speakers outside Iran, or expat Iranians quite willing to tip their cards?
Can anyone tell what that photo on the "Death to USA" sign is about? The "Esreal" one is clearly a burning Israeli flag. The USA one looks a bit like the 9/11 attack, but it is less clear in this photo. Are there, perhaps, other shots that give a better view?
As someone whose ears are sensitive to languages and words, I was struck by Mr. Spencer's rendition of the Farsi phrases on the signs. Farsi, after all, is an Indo-European language. When reading the two great Hindu epics this summer (Ramayana and Mahabharata), I could see in many Sanskrit words the roots connecting them to European words.
I am guessing that the phrase "al-mawt", meaning "death", must come from Arabic, however, unless it is somehow connected to "moot". In Hebrew, death is "maveth" (or "maweth").
What puzzles me is that Persia was an ancient civilization with one of the world's oldest religions, so they must have had their own native Indo-European word for death. Why exactly is it that they felt it necessary to adopt the Arabic word for death?

They share the same sentiments, Katie Couric will probably do a lighthearted interview with him so she can show the world how he is so misunderstood.
They have learned from the Master of the Forked Tongue - Arafat, who talked in plaeasant platitudes in English and told the truth in Arabic.
I really doubt that any of the five TV news dispensers will catch this. If someone does, it will not be reported. If any of y'all become aware of a news outlet broadcasting the Arabic words, please post the link or provide a description.

"Down With America"...."Down With Israel"
The "Death To" carries a lot more weight than "Down With". Did they think we wouldn't notice?
How many blocks away from the action are we gonna have to sit with our "Death to islamo-Fascist" signs? My guess is there will be "General Betrayus" signs a few blocks closer

I heard on FNC that some of the students wanted to nail Ahmadinejihad with tough questions. I doubt if these young people would have the ability to pin him down. He would lie, and smile, and the people would believe him. Remember how wily the devil can be.
