Turin, 3 Sept.(AKI) - A young Nigerian Roman Catholic who faces death by stoning in his homeland for having had pre-marital sex with his girlfriend, has appealed to Italy not to deport him. "I am safe here. I know by the grace of God I will find life here, Felix Eugene told Adnkronos International (AKI).The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) is due to begin considering on Monday whether Eugene, 27, can remain in Italy, where he has been living since 2004.
"I know that as a young man, I can do any kind of work," said Eugene. He been working as a casual labourer unloading goods at a supermarket in the northern Italian city of Turin, and working as a hairdresser in his free time.
Magistrates in Nigeria sentenced Eugene to death by stoning preceeded by public flogging. A Sharia court gave him 20 lashes for 21 days for having tried to convert his Muslim girlfriend Fatima to Christianity. " I wanted to marry her, so she could be the mother of my children," he told AKI.
He said he has not been able to contact Fatima or his family since his escape from jail in Niger State and his flight from Nigeria. "I would like to get in touch with my family and Fatima, but I know it will not be easy to find her," said Eugene....

i used to work for british immigration so i have first hand proof that deportation is very rare in europe. the worst that will happen to this guy, is he will be deported to a friendly african nation. where he will simply get on an aircraft, or his uncles ship and head to the U.K, claim asylum, show his case, get massive hand outs, free home etc and in a few years he will bring over his entire family, their family friends relatives, pets etc.

What gave you the idea that when somebody is deported, he is deported anywhere? It's always to his country of citizenship or birth: that's why nobody has publicly stated that people born in Europe or the US who embrace Islam, or are born to Muslim parents, should be deported, since they can't simply be deported anywhere. It would be nice if all Muslims could be given a 1 way ticket to the Haj, but you will never see, say, an Israeli Muslim, for instance, being deported from the US to Egypt.
Also, Europe has yet to start a policy of deporting Muslims from their lands. Given that, they don't have a good reason to deport this man. Having said that, all of Nigeria isn't Muslim - they do have some Christian provinces. Does this man fear vigilantes from the north will follow him to the South and hunt him down?

I went to a wedding a week ago. The bride had gotten sick out west a month or so earlier and spent the better part of two weeks in the hospital. Thankfully she was OK, but the bill was nearly $200k. She doesn’t have the money and never will. Uncle Sugar covered it. Everything is OK now though, she married a junior civil servant and is covered for the follow-up treatments.
The truly moral thing for the West to do is to create a sustainable social safety net for the people who have paid into it for their entire lives. It’s a little late for that though. The $3 trillion in annual unfunded liabilities is real (US alone).

Right you are, but we're talking about Italy. If a Muslim turns Christian, then it is our duty to help him when in need. Leon, I feel that you are "losing it" with some of your comments over this issue. This is an issue of one man who has fled from Nigeria because he was sentenced to death illegally by a sharia court. The sharia court should have no jurisdiction over Christians but that is obviously not the case. He deserves the same sympathy as any white person who flees a country because of oppression. You are making a sweeping assumption that the man is not a genuine Roman Catholic, and that he has an ulterior motive. However, I suspect that you are totally wrong in your assumptions.

I saw your comments ;-) and I have referred to the actual story. According to the original story, Eugene is a Roman Catholic. His father was also arrested, and his father paid a bribe to the mullah who was guarding both of them so that Eugene could escape. The mullah had his throat slit as soon as it was realized that Eugene had escaped.
If he was sent back to Nigeria then he faces certain death because of the application of sharia law, and the fact that he was found guilty of getting his girlfriend Fatima pregnant. She was the Muslim (someone else who made a comment seemed to think that he was the Muslim.) There is no mention of Eugene converting from Islam, so he is not at risk because of apostasy. However, his life is at risk because he attempted to marry a Muslim girl.

We don't. Countries take their "best guess" based on predetermined criteria.
All a country's bureaucrats can do is follow the rules on immigration. If a person qualifies, then s/he is permitted to stay. If not, s/he has to leave. Different countries have different rules. Sometimes publicity can help sway a decision, sometimes not: it can depend upon the prevailing political climate and proximity to an election.
This man is applying as a refugee. Apparently there is documentation to prove his case.
Accepting refugees is a human rights issue. I don't think refugees are held to the same standard (ie. a certain level of education, money in a bank account, etc.) as immigrants, precisely because they are refugees.
My dictionary says this:
"refugee: a person who flees for refuge or safety, especially to a foreign country, in time of persecution, war, etc."

This is a dispute over the ownership of a female. Fatima is Muslimah breeding stock, and thus is chattel of her closest male relative. Under Islamic law, her title cannot be transferred to anyone but a Muslim. Mr. Eugene doubtlessly knew Sharia law when he was romancing Fatima.
That is the extent of the relevancy of Mr. Eugene's Roman Catholicism. He is not fleeing for his nonexistent apostasy or his freedom of religious expression. Essentially, he stole the property of the ummah, and they want to punish him for it. There's no romantic, nostril-flaring fight for freedom involved in this at all.
I am more concerned about Fatima's fate than this guy's. She's probably dead, tortured and honor-killed, while he sets himself up in a nice new life in a nice new country.

I had misrepresented Eugene’s girlfriend as Christian, which she is not, though from the article he hoped to convert her to Christianity. This is a terrible crime under sharia law, but it does not excuse Islamics in extending their cruel laws to non-muslims, which in so doing they then become an all pervasive cult religion. In my treatment of Islam above I sounded unduly harsh to prove a point, that the caliphate turned this Mohammedan religion into a jihadic cult, which makes it evil and shaitanically unconscionable. I do not believe individual Muslims are all cultists in this respect, though the jihadists would have us and their own believe they represent the true Islam, so every muslim must be like them. That is false. I hope in time Muslims will learn to distance themselves from this harsh calipha-sharia-jihad interpretation of their religion. If more Mulsims would stand up to this evil caliphate jihad, and be less punitive with its regressive sharia laws, especially as it applies to non-muslims, they could perhaps regain respect from those of us who now view Islam with disdain and loathing. To call this evil cultlike version of Islam a religion is a crime against humanity.
Back on track, Eugene made mistakes, he made a muslima pregnant which earned him condemnation from the ummah, but it does not justify his stoning death, nor hers. Nigeria is not a sharia state, but has a secular constitution. Their imposition of vigilante sharia on Nigerians is a violation of the law of the land, and such individuals should be rounded up and arrested for doing so. The fact that he wanted her to convert to Christianity should be between her and God, and not the business of sharia or the ummah. The fact that Eurgene’s life is at risk in Nigeria is a failure of their government, and that his muslima friend may have already suffered by this sharia should be punished as a crime, regardless of what sharia says. It is because sharia and ummah disregard the laws of the land, and place themselves above them, is why Eugene has grounds for seeking political (or perhaps renamed as religio-political) asylum in the European country in which he lives. Ideally his woman muslima would join him, if still alive, and marry him properly as a Christian woman, if that is her choice. The moral issue is whether or not she is free to choose, as a free human being, or is she trapped by the evil cult into which she was born. This is not about religion, not about the merits of Christian values opposed to Islamic values, but it is firstly about universal human rights.
Should Eugene be given asylum on the basis of his and her human rights? If I were an Italian judge, I would grant it. If she is still living, he should bring her to Italy and raise the family in a civilized world. From this base then he and his family can work to influence events in Nigeria, if it is his ability to do so, and fight against the spread of that evil cult in his land of origin.

What's this back on track nonsense. Now we criticize Eugene for fleeing to save his own life? Who is the enemy?
In a modern non-Muslim, Western country, what would be the punishment for Eugene? Fornication is a religious transgression, to my knowledge, it is not punishable in modern Christian societies. Man does not have the right to punish people for purely religious transgressions.
Unfortunately, Felix "Hotfoot" Eugene didn't perform his religious transgression in a "modern Christian society." His love 'em and leave 'em routine was performed in an area subject to Sharia law, which he was certainly fully aware of at the time.
While I can understand some of the opposing points here, this guy is no showpiece of the Resistance, and the real victim's voice will never be heard. (I find Eugene's protestations that he would like to find Fatima -- it's been three years now, note, and not a single clue? -- about as convincing as O.J. Simpson's vow to find the "real killers.") But Eugene's found a good hook to hang his asylum hat on; and perhaps we need to take the bounders and the hangers-on along with the genuine fighters.

If he is returned to sharia law in Nigria, stoning is surely his fate. It took me a while to find out that "lapidation" is a nice word for stoning.
He was in jail and escaped, hardly a situation where he could become a hero. He might not meet someone's expectation of chivalry and romanticism, but he has not broken any law, except sharia law which we must not ever recognize has having any legitimacy anywhere.

Give him asylum if he will learn to become a missionary in order to return to one of the neighboring countries of his homeland and spread the Gospel from there.

I think my point was that there's not a lot of difference, in the sum of it, between "Hotfoot" Eugene and Billybob who gets his daddy to buy him a ticket out of Texas when Sharlene turns up pregnant. If we have standards of behavior, we should apply them equally.

A few words:
1.) Civility is crucial. Accusing fellow posters of being "ignorant," or "pinko liberals," and so on does not advance the discussion, and ultimately reflects poorly on any point one is trying to make.
2.) Exercise caution against posting too prolifically. No one likes a thread monopolized by one poster.
3.) My thoughts on this:
This story is about the double standard that exists in the West for taking in refugees; Western countries are all too eager to take in refugees from Muslim countries, while throwing other refugees, including non-Muslims persecuted by Muslims and Islamic law, to the wolves.
Additionally, it illustrates the violently enforced double standard for Christian evangelism versus Islamic dawa under Sharia law.
Both of these points are valid to report, regardless of Felix' character. However, even if Felix is an unsavory character, persecution is persecution, and Western values indicate that the punishment is excessive and unjust for something regarded here as a moral failing rather than a civil crime. We need to stand up to Sharia for anyone, as a matter of principle, rather than being tempted to look the other way when we don't like the accused.
In that light, I don't see how "brain drain" from Africa or shortcomings in the U.S. government's response to Katrina factor in.
In summary: Please be civil, stay on topic, maintain perspective and leave your non-jihad axes to grind at the door.
