Ambassadors from Muslim countries have indicated that they intend to present the Swedish prime minister with a list of demands when they meet for talks on Friday.Fredrik Reinfeldt invited the ambassadors from 20 Muslim countries to government offices on Friday following a wave of protests from Muslim countries after the publication of a caricature of Muhammad in local newspaper Nerikes Allehanda.
Reinfeldt's press secretary Oscar Hållén was unable to say which countries had confirmed their attendance.
Egyptian ambassador Mohamed Sotouhi told news agency TT that he and a group of fellow ambassadors had agreed on a list of measures Sweden needed to take if it was to secure a long-term solution to the Muhammad cartoon controversy.
According to Sotouhi, "comprehensive measures" were required if Sweden was to prevent some "amateur artist" from reawakening tensions every other month.
"We want to see action, not just nice words. We have to push for a change in the law," he said.
"Muslims need legal protection against the desecration of the Prophet Muhammad, maybe something similar to the protection enjoyed by Jews and homosexuals."
Disingenuous. Neither Jews nor homosexuals enjoy the protections he is demanding.
While praising the "very constructive steps" taken by Fredrik Reinfeldt, the Egyptian ambassador said that Sweden had much work left to do."In the long term the school curriculum has to convince pupils that if they want to express their opinion they should do so in such a way that it doesn't cause offence or hurt. This should also be part of journalism training," said Sotouhi.
"A permanent parliamentary committee also needs to be established to tackle islamophobia," he added.
The ambassador urged Reinfeldt to strive towards "reaching a balance between freedom of speech and taking responsibility to avoid offending Muslims or other religious groups in this society".
"Everybody will compare his wisdom with the situation in Denmark, whose prime minister treated the problem with a sort of arrogance, or at least delayed taking action to prevent the problem from escalating," he said.
Sotouhi described Sweden as a sophisticated country containing talented and creative diplomats.
"They know that proactive measures are necessary and we are ready to cooperate with them," he said.
Algeria's ambassador to Sweden, Merzak Bedjaoui, said the meeting "was an excellent initiative taken in a spirit of appeasement."
"At our level, we are trying to work hand in hand with Swedish authorities to try to create a real bridge between our communities," he said.
"When we speak of a dialogue between civilisations, it can't just be a catchy slogan. I think that the publication of this kind of caricature doesn't help at all," he said.
Earlier in the day the Oscar Hållén said that the meeting would form "part of our dialogue with these countries."
"We want to emphasize the fact that Muslims and Christians live side by side in Sweden in a spirit of mutual respect," he said.
Hållén further added that the government intended to reiterate its earler defence of Swedish laws surrounding freedom of expression.

My response would be a plethora of demands they implement in their countries, including:
1. Equal treatment of Christians, Jews, women, homosexuals, dogs, etc.
2. No stonings or other punishment (including 'honor' killings) for extramarital sex, premarital sex, rumors of sex, holding hands, wanting to or marrying someone unacceptable to the family, etc.
3. No hijab/niqab/burqa/coverings. EVER.

Why do we listen to their demands when they don't listen to ours? The Prime Minister should throw every one of these diplomats out in protest to their effrontery to Swedish laws and citizen, who the hell are these countries to dictate civil law to the SOVERIGN State of Sweden like Sweden just lost a war and is signing a peace treaty. All I can say from my horizon here in Sweden is that something is brewing under the surface in this country. People are getting angrier by the day. Both by the spineless ruling elite and muslim behaviour vs. silence from the muslims who claim to be peacefull. They just want to sue the guy who made the picture. Oil is fungible. If Oil Consumer X does not buy his oil from Oil Producer A, he can buy it from Oil Producer B or C or D. Sweden is not "dependent" on "Middle East oil." The oil-rich Muslim lands are totally dependent for their continued prosperity, even survival, on the sale of oil and gas. They make nothing. They do nothing. They rely entirely on small armies of expatriate workers, Europeans and Americans at the top, Koreans as contractors in the middle, and at the bottom, the domestic (and sex) slaves from Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and male workers for manual labor, from India and Pakistan.
One must simply stop thinking in terms of being "dependent" on "Middle Eastern oil." We aren't. We need do them no political favors, but need only offer the market price. That's it. Just as with a gas station: you pay the price at the pump, you get the gas. End of story.

Well, our Prime Ministers meeting with ambassadors of islamic countris hasn't been made yet (in a few ours it is completed) but just to invite them I think is wrong and sends completely wrong signals.
The ambassadors looks at the invitation as an excuse which means an opportunity for them, given by the Prime Minister, to get some influence on the Swedish politics. That's why the ambassadors have a list of demands; they wants to make Mohamed pictures forbidden to publish and a council in the swedish parliament against islamofobic acts.

I agree with you on this, it´s maddening to see time and time again that our politicians behave in that manner. Like they think it will go away if they just spread some meaningless words all over the place, try to make everyone to feel like a miljon dollars and then pretend nothing ever happend.

The prime minister needs to take a stand and take it now and be very clear that their is no negotiation in curtailing your freedoms. The meating between the swedish prime minister and the muslim ambassadors ended a little while ago. The first statements from that meeting was that the PM once again stated that there are freedom of thought and writing in Sweden and that teh government does not decide whats printed or not.
It seems that the ambassadors didn´t bring a list of demands with them. "There have been no demands per se", acording to PM Reinfeldt. If that´s true, it would seem that it was a lot of yapping in order to intimmidate before the meeting.
The ambassadors, acording to the first statements, said they had a good dialouge.
There might be another tune when they report back to their bosses, but only time will tell.
In time we´ll probably get more info on what was said or not, but it is a real problem if our PM and other western leaders don´t take these opportunities to turn the tables on these thugs. I don´t believe the gowernments in the islamic world would ever think of be giving an excuse for their subjects burning of swedish flags and effigies of our PM. They are the ones to be ashamed! Not us.
