"We warn the Israeli enemy government against this flagrant aggressive act, and retain the right to respond in an appropriate way" -- this from a country that harbors jihadists who are bent on the destruction of Israel and glory in the murder of Israeli civilians.
"Syria: Air defenses fired at Israeli aircraft over our airspace," from the Jerusalem Post:
Syrian air defenses opened fire on four IAF aircraft that violated Syrian airspace overnight Thursday, a Syrian military spokesman said.Four or five IAF aircraft broke the sound barrier and dropped heavy equipment over deserted areas of northern Syria, along its border with Turkey. Syrian officials reported that fuel tanks were dropped.
"We warn the Israeli enemy government against this flagrant aggressive act, and retain the right to respond in an appropriate way," the Syrian spokesman said.
It was not clear if Syria was accusing the Israelis of using warplanes or some type of other aircraft like drones.
"The Israeli enemy aircraft infiltrated into the Arab Syrian territory through the northern border, coming from the Mediterranean heading toward the eastern region, breaking the sound barrier," the spokesman said.
"Air defense units confronted them and forced them to leave after they dropped some ammunition in deserted areas without causing any human or material damage."
The IDF said that it was "not accustomed to responding to such reports."
Israel acknowledges flying over Lebanon routinely, but it is unclear how often its aircraft fly over Syria, if at all.
Syrian officials, including President Bashar Assad, have repeatedly warned Israel in recent weeks that the occupation of the Golan Heights "cannot last forever."

....neither can Muslim control of the Middle East....
Assad - hello - it is not occupation, it is ownership which will probably outlast your lifetime.
One cannot unilaterally change the rules of war, even if you are a Democrat.
Rummy understood this (but then the dimwits forced his removal).
What's won in war by blood, belongs to the victors, if they can keep it.
(maybe Olmert can get on the ticket with Hillary)
Syrian Information Minister Muhsin Bilal addressed the report on the infiltration of an Israeli plane into Syria's airspace, saying that "President Bashar Assad had said that this year would be crucial to the region and the entire world.
"The president has said more than once that he does not trust the Israeli government, and this act proves it. Israel has proved that it is only interested in aggression and not in peace," Bilal said in an interview with al-Jazeera. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, in Arabic, this is how the quote is probably going like this:
Syrian officials, including President Bashar Assad, have repeatedly warned Israel in recent weeks that the occupation of the entire Palestinian lands "cannot last forever."
Well look at this........US Democratic presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich, on a Mideast visit that included a stop in Syria, said the country lambasted by the Bush administration deserves credit for taking in more than a million Iraqi refugees.
Kucinich, a strong anti-war opponent who trails far in the US presidential polls, also said he won't visit Iraq on his trip to the region because he considers the US military deployment there illegal
I feel the United States is engaging in an illegal occupation ... I don't want to bless that occupation with my presence," he said in an interview in Lebanon, after visiting Syria. "I will not do it." http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1188392553023&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull
And why didn't the Syrians scramble fighters to confront the Israeli planes????
I guess nobody said they were stupid....
"Syrian officials, including President Bashar Assad, have repeatedly warned Israel in recent weeks that the occupation of the entire Palestinian lands "cannot last forever."

........The Syrian officials should be more concerned about the Iranians, who are plotting to eliminate them.....

But do they really want to keep it? The Israeli will appears to be broken, if Olmert is any indication. People are tired of fighting. Peace at any price is now the goal.
lol @ topic...
Hmmmm...while at the same time, THIS:

True, but the israelis have been fighting almost constantly since 1948. I can understand that they are tired. But now is not the time to give up.
It sounds as if the Syrian government has hired Vladimir Putin to write its speeches for it.
To PMK and bonncaruso -
Fighting evil, as Israel has had to do for more than sixty years, is exhausting. The lies and propaganda are probably worse than the bombs.
However, I think that as the truth sinks in that they are facing not a local nationalism but a state of mind driven by Islam, its 'dominate at all costs' imperative, and as more of their citizens begin to grasp that the 'Palestinian' method of 'negotiation' is the classic Muslim technique of suckering the 'enemy' just long enough for the Muslims to regroup, rearm, and attack at will, then they should lose the confusion.
Once Israelis 'get' the meaning of hudna and the Treaty of Hudaybiyya, along with taqiyya and kitman, everything that has happened in their dealings with their neighbours, and the 'Palestinians', from 1947 onward, ought to make sense. They have been suckered, and then betrayed, by hudna after hudna; and by barefaced malicious lying. Time for them to quit negotiating and stick to darura (as Hugh advises). You can't negotiate anything meaningful with a 'partner' who lies without blinking, perpetually.
I hope that the Israelis are looking at the mistakes made by the Crusader Kingdoms - and learning not to repeat them! I hope they are looking at the mistakes made by the Persians and Byzantines when fighting with Islam, and learning not to repeat them! (As indeed our own leaders should also be doing...and if they were, we would all be supporting Israel to the hilt, as also all the others who are engaged in similar struggles, such as Thailand and the Philippines).
Hang in there, Israel - and Thailand, and India in Kashmir, and Philippines, and southern Sudanese, and Ethiopia too. You are fighting for us all.
