Sheikh Qaradawi, in his The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam, reflects a more mainstream view when he argues that photography is acceptable and is not an example of the image-making that is forbidden by Allah, because a photograph merely records Allah's creation, rather than involving human artifice. And of course the practical difficulties created by this Deobandi fatwa are illustrated by the practice of the Dar ul-Uloom itself.

Muzaffarnagar, Sept. 6 (PTI): The Dar-ul Uloom has issued a fatwa banning photography, saying it is unlawful and against the Shariat.However, the Islamic seminary in Deoband has itself issued photo-identity cards to its students and employees.
According to Dar-ul uloom sources, four clerics have ruled that photography, including clicking someone’s picture and posing for a picture, is illegal under the Shariat.
Anything beyond the Stone Age is a no-no by the reckoning of such primitives. Is this really what their god wants for mankind? To drag it backward rather than progress? What kind of ridiculous god would want his people to worsen their lives? Anyone following a god calling for regress HAS to be out of their right mind.

But god forbid that any depiction of people involving "human artifice" should dare to be practiced or, in a truly Islamic society, even tolerated. None of that "human artifice" as practiced by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, or Piero della Francesca, Rembrandt or Vermeer, Velazquez or Goya, Chardin or Balthus, Gainsborough or Romney, John Singleton Copley or John Singer Sargent, or ten thousand others whose pieces hang in the museums, or millions of others of delighted and sometimes delighting Infidels, attempting to capture a human form or face on canvas, indifferent to whether or not their productions would come to the notice of posterity.
In Islam, all of that is forbidden. Look at the museums. Look at the Metropolitan Museum or the Louvre or the National Gallery or the Prado or the Rijksmuseum or the Hermitage. What do you have in the half-room, or room or two, devoted to "Islamic art"? Calligraphy, pieces of ceramic identified as "Islamic art" but often wrongly so because one can clearly discern -- as in the Harvey Plotnick collection now on display at the Art Institute of Chicago -- Christian or Jewish imagery. The only thing "Islamic" about some of those artifacts is that they were made by Christians and Jews in lands now ruled by Muslims, and Arabic was in widespread use.
Islam is the enemy of Western -- and Eastern -- art. It is the enemy of free inquiry that underlies science. It is the enemy of all Infidels who are attached to, who wish to preserve, their own legal and political institutions, and the solicitude toward individual rights and autonomy enshrined in those institutions.

While we're on the topic of modern inventions like cameras and photos, perform this litle mental exercize the next time that you see these rabble demonstrating their idiotic outrage in the streets after someone draws a picture of Mohammed with a grenade up his turban: imagine that everything in the picture or video that was invented in the West wasn't there. No megaphones or microphones, no cars or trucks, no cameras to take the photos of all the non-Islamic inventions, which are the only signs of progress beyond the 7th century in the photo. In short, there won't be much left in the picture except dirt poor hellbound grievance mongers.
Also, no Internet on which to post their infantile threats, no washing machine timers or cell phones with which to detonate their cowardly bombs. No airplanes to fly into buildings.
If these dopes were consistent they would ban more than cameras - they would ban *all* these things from their midsts. But they could hardly live without the fruits of Christian progress, could they? A delightful irony no doubt lost on them.

The funny thing is, very few people in Muslim countries (with the exception of Saudi Arabia) actually believe that photographs are anti-Islamic. The ones I've been to, anyway. Seems like far more Muslims in the West believe this. And when the Muslims in the West are too radical even for Muslim countries--well, it's just freaking scary.
This is GREAT! No pictures, no Muslim driver's licenses. No Somali taxi drivers. Since the U.S. requires photo ID (passport) to enter the country, no Muslim immigration.

Yes, the irony is lost on them and so is their hypocrisy when they flock to the U.S. to be educated by inferior infidels in our finest universities. And we are STUPID for allowing them to come to America and gain access to the technology and knowledge that wouldn't exist were it not for Western innovation and genius. Why should they improve their lot at home when they can get everything they need from us? They come to America, join the muslim student association, engage in da'wa and islamic activism on our campuses, get the best educations the world has to offer, then return to crapistan and join the mujahadeen to plot our destruction.
They become familiar with our culture, our vulnerabilities, our legal system, our military; we are absolutely insane to allow muslim spies to come here and exploit us! We are also insane to allow muslims to immigrate to America, but after 9-11, muslim immigration increased by leaps and bounds and continues unabated.
A hundred years from now, if America and the Western world still exist, people will no doubt be amazed at the level of ignorance and incompetence prevalent among our currentleaders. They will be shocked when they read about the lunatic left's hysterical devotion to and promotion of cultural Marxism and their sublime, politically correct, multicultural utopia where truth was called hate and death was preferable to self-defense or rudeness. Unless Ibrahim Hooper can assure people that every Quran that CAIR hands out is actually hand written , the CAIR is breaking the rules by taking pictures of every verse and page to be put together in a book form.
