When confronted there about the fliers, he made unspecified verbal threats, according to the sources.
Chowdhury was charged with aggravated harassment as a hate crime.

The alleged perp's name and affiliations are easy to deduce. There was a more curious incident in Toronto recently.
In the middle of August, there were a number of letter bombs delivered to a limited number of people in the Toronto area. The police quickly caught the perpetrator, apprehending a suspect on the 31st of August and closing off major arterial roads so that the bomb squad could transport the suspect's car and the bombs it carried to a place where it could be safely detonated. But unlike other cases in which violent offenders are caught, there was no announcement of the perpetrator's name. I found this curious and immediately wondered whether the accused was a Moslem. I don't know why "Moslem" immediately came to my mind. It just did. So I pored over the local newspapers and found the story eventually buried in the back pages. Yes. Moslem name all right. "Adel Mohammed Arnaout." Lived in a house with a Moslem landlord ("I don't understand. My tenant is a nice man. He wouldn't do such a thing." etc. etc. etc.). But this bit of information wasn't forthcoming. What was almost forthcoming was that the suspect's motives were personal. Apparently this bit of information was considered important enough to broadcast immediately, perhaps even before the police had an opportunity to question the man in custody.
Of course it's true that this man's alleged actions may or may not have anything to do with his religion. But the way in which the story was handled leads me to conclude that somebody didn't want this fellow's ethnic background broadcast. Someone felt that there was something to hide. When the Unabomber was caught, how long did it take for his identity to be made known? Remember "Theodore John Kaczynski?" The police couldn't wait to provide the public with an identity. But it would seem that times have changed.

It makes me laugh how the school bored will cover this up, when wasn't it in Queens not too long ago a female teacher was reprimanded for wearing a cross? If I'm not mistaken it was on the news, and the news station very much took the stance of mixing church & state. I might be wrong but...its not out of the realm of possibilities.

If a person was distributing leaflets that called for conversion to Islam, the "religion unknown" commentary is a dhimmi move done as to not upset you-know-who. Who else would make such a demand? Did they think this guy was like those door-to-door flyer deliverers?

OT My daughter is a TA at a grade school. Her class won a pizza party for reaching a fundraising goal. There is one muslim cild in the class.
Usually the students can vote on 3 kinds of pizza-pepperoni, sausage, or cheese. This year the teacher said "cheese only" to be "respectful of all" in the class. The kids did not get it, but my daughter did. Several parents inquired and the mud hit the fan. Bottom line: There will be 3 kinds of pizza this year, and 2 will contain pork.
This is a situation where the teacher "dhimmied-out" before any muslim complaint was made.

You don't know how many school board meetings I've attended just to be ridiculed by teachers and other parents who believe "all religions worship one God," "it's just a few muslims who are terrorists, "the qu'ran honors Jesus and Mary," and "you're can't be a true Catholic if you don't love others."
But Robert Spencer's knowledge changed all that. Using the actual qu'ran and Robert's books, I can silence an auditorium of people faster than a masked man with an Uzi.
People are very uncomfortable when confronted with reality. It puts a major crimp in their fantasy football, happy hour, t.v. distracted existences.

It would have been a fair statement if the student's name was "Bob Smith", because the guy might have been indulging in black propaganda, i.e. trying to make Muslims look worse than they are (difficult but possible). But the guy's name--Yaseen Chowdury--just makes it silly.
Or, to be charitable, the remark might have been a subtle piece of sarcasm.

Earlier this year there was a live BBC report on a family in England (originally from Africa) that had just had its 7th child on the 7/7/2007 in ward No7. The father on his own initiative explained how important it was to him because he was a Christian and the biblical associations with the No 7.
The BBC reporter quickly interrupted him with something like " Oh..Oh..its also important for Muslims because of...(something about Islam and No7.)
As soon as he heard the word Christian he felt it was his duty to include Muslims. You could hear the tremble in his voice as he desperately tried to counter talk of Christianity on its own.
Luckily this particular Christian had not spent to long in the West and replied "Well I don't want to talk about Muslims."

Why would anyone other than a muslim pass out fliers urging people to convert to islam?! Did someone offer him a commission for each successful conversion? This "news" story is about as satisfying as reading a gripping mystery that reveals few clues and keeps you wondering 'till the end, only to discover that the last three pages are missing and you'll never know the outcome.

"The student's religion was not immediately known." There may be a good explanation for this. Consistent with his new religion and its doctrine of taqiyah, the culprit may have misrepresented and lied about about his culpability for hours and hours and hours.
Imagine if two Mormon missionaries came to your door to talk about their religion. What if, later, you had to report them to the police for some reason (for, I don't know, being too polite, or saying no to a cup of coffee). Would the news report that night say, "The men's religion was not immediately known"? I don't think so.
