ISLAMABAD, Oct 1 (Reuters) - A suicide bomber wearing a woman's burqa set off explosives in the northwestern Pakistani town of Bannu on Monday killing up to 15 people, including four policemen, security officials said.The blast was the lastest in a wave of attacks, most in the northwest of the country near the border with Afghanistan, blamed on Islamist militants based in tribal areas on the Afghan border.
Military spokesman Major-General Waheed Arshad said 11 civilians and four policemen had been killed in the suicide blast in the town, which is in North West Frontier Province.
An Interior Ministry spokesman said 11 people -- four of them policemen -- had been killed.
"A burqa-clad bomber -- either it was a woman or a man in a burqa -- set off explosives when police approached," said ministry spokesman Javed Iqbal Cheema....
The surge of violence comes as army chief and president Pervez Musharraf is preparing to try to win another term in an Oct. 6 presidential election.
Many Pakistanis disapprove of Musharraf's staunch support for the U.S.-led war on terrorism, which they blame for stirring up militant violence in the ethnic Pashtun areas along the Afghan border.

One cold morning way back in 1974, I was commuting to work on my motorcycle, and the temperatue was slightly below freezing. I was stopped at a traffic signal when a police car pulled up next to me. I was wearing a ski mask, and the officer gave me the cold stare several times over. I found out that there was a city ordinance prohibiting masks. I presume the cop thought I was stupid for riding a motorcycle in freezing weather and gave me a break.
Whatever it is called, burka, hajib or hijab, it is a mask and must not be allowed, except for dumb 27 year old guys on motorcycles in 30 degree weather.

Hirsi Ali has returned to the Netherlands
According to the newspaper Telegraaf Hirsi Ali has been forced to return to the Netherlands as the Minister of "Justice", mr. Hirsch Ballin, is no longer willing to pay for her security detail in the US. Her protection was withdrawn as of today, according to NRC Handelsblad.
Hirsi Ali arrived from Washington at Schiphol Airport today and was brought to a secure location. From there she will continue her work for her employer, the American Enterprise Institute. As a "threathened person" she can count on security paid for by the Dutch government, as long as she is a resident of the Netherlands, which she is planning to become again.
Authorities in the US apparently cannot assume the burden of her security as US law does not permit this.

For America's own protection, do we not still have laws in the US which make wearing a disguise or a mask in public a crime? I know there used to be such laws, even in the state of NY. And certainly within the last 30 years when my father was still on the NYPD.
And if we don't have 'disguise laws' because they have been deemed unconstitutional what can we do about it? Using Constitutional granted rights should not the be all and end all of every argument. Nor should draping oneself in Constitutional protections put the lives of others in danger.
Its a bit like liberals always harping on about how we have to allow terrorist to phone each other freely just so we protect the 'inalienable right to privacy' as they believe it. If you have nothing to hide why care so much if law enforcement searches you?
This is a shame -- as the burqa was once a stunning fashion statement and a symbol of life, beauty and elegance. Now it symbolizes death and destruction. How sad.

slightly OT - I was attending a vegetarian festival in Charlottesville, VA this past Saturday - I do volunteer work with an animal rescue group and we were there to increase the public's awareness of us. Anyway, a middle aged woman stopped by and asked about our group, etc and commented that she isn't a vegan, but that food animals should at least be humanely raised and slaughtered. I said I agreed and how sad that (northern) Virginia with a influx of Muslims over the past several years has seen an increase in farms catering just to them and their barbaric halal method of slaugherting animals. She then tells me that kosher is worse, etc and that "Middle Easterners, especially Muslims" get such a bad and unfair rep in ths country. I was incredulous and replied that kosher and halal are pretty much the same and haven't you watched any of the videos of hostages having their heads sawed off by Muslims? There are just too many clueless people in this country. No matter how much the obvious is presented to these people, they just refuse to accept it.
We are doomed.

Not to nitpick, but: hijab is the scarf alone. Niquab is the scarf with the facial covering. Burqa is the revolting outer garment, that makes it's wearer a dark ghost (during Hajj, women are allowed to wear white burqa).
So, a burqa might be worn over a niquab, another facial covering, but not necessarily.
I'm familiar with this crap only because I once worked for someone who had no respect for women. As a protest, I wore hijab (to show my condition as a slave), for several months. I was in my mid thirties at the time, proving one is never to old to be an idiot.
