Ehsan Jami sees himself as the legendary Dutch boy who used his finger to plug a leaking dike.Jami, a Dutch politician, is trying to prevent a flood of what he views as intolerant Muslim immigrants threatening to overrun the Netherlands and all of Europe.
He's not alone. In France, Germany and across Western Europe, a vigorous public debate is under way over preservation of national identities, the assimilation of minorities and tolerance of different cultures.
A former Muslim who was born in Iran, Jami is a right-wing member of the Dutch parliament who has used his position to issue strong criticism of Islam.
He's especially critical of "radical" Muslims but he also takes issue with Islam's treatment of women and homosexuals.
The harsh rhetoric has made him the most talked-about public figure in Holland and provoked physical attacks and death threats, forcing him into hiding.
"I don't mind if people are Muslim, but I do mind when their values go against Western values," Jami said in a recent interview, under the watchful eye of his bodyguards. "We have to be very clear with Muslim immigrants that we will not negotiate our values."
The Netherlands has one of the largest populations of Muslims in Western Europe — about 1 million, roughly 6 percent of the population, second only to France. The largest groups are people with origins in Morocco or Turkey.
The country has long taken pride in its religious, political and social tolerance, as well as its acceptance of ethnic minorities. And many in the Netherlands' new coalition government boast a pro-immigrant stance.
But the threats of terrorism and sheer demographics are challenging traditional Dutch open-mindedness. Studies estimate that Muslims will form the majorities in the Netherlands' four biggest cities by 2020.
Many Muslims say they don't feel at home here.

"I've lived here for 40 years and I still don't feel welcome," said Atel Alireza, a taxi driver from Turkey. "But I would say things have gotten a lot worse since 9/11."People around here look at you more suspiciously then they used to," he said. "People look at all Muslims like they are about to do something bad."
Where do people get these crazy ideas?
The tensions have spawned legislative proposals to ban the Quran, make it illegal for women to wear burkas in public and create more legal options for closing mosques known to be hotbeds of radicalism.So far none of the proposals has gained traction. And Jami's Dutch Labor Party has distanced itself from Jami and his statements on Islam.

Gregory Maniatis, an expert on immigrant integration issues at the Migration Policy Institute in Washington, D.C., said the coalition government formed earlier this year has signaled it will take a softer approach to immigration than the previous government.
Softer? One would have thought "marshmellow" was soft enough.
For example, Maniatis pointed to the amnesty for illegal immigrants approved in June by the Dutch government that will benefit up to 30,000 people."I think this is a sign that they're moving from a fortress Europe mentality to a more pro-immigrant sentiment," he said. "There is still a backdrop of outspokenness that exists in the Netherlands. But they are realizing that immigration is an important part of Europe's future."
"Fortress Europe" -- you will recall -- was Hitler's Europe, bristling with artillery, Panzers, and machine guns. To equate the anti-immigrant sentiments expressed in Holland with the German occupation of Western Europe is just another example of the hysteria that grips the media when anybody breaths a word out of step with the multicultural party line. One wonders where the rhetorical hyperbole will end.
Somewhere in all this mess French nuclear weapons change hands to jihadis. That's a critical point.

Indeed, we should all note with great consternation that the demographic conquest of Europe is very far along in both England and France, and both England and France have fully developed and ready to use NUCLEAR ARSENALS with sophisticated delivery systems. Today, we fear what might happen if "terrorists" ( in other words: MUSLIMS ) might get their hands on one or two or three nuclear weapons.
What do you think will happen when they have at their disposal HUNDREDRS of NUCLEAR WEAPONS mounted on missles or carried by bombers? Do you think they will hesitate to use them??
When I think of Europe today I think of the Europe my grandfather fled with his wife and kids in 1933. He returned with Patton just a few years later to crush a fascist regime that came to power while Europe slept.
It's absolutely appalling to see it happening all over again and seeing the Europeans allowing it to happen with all the alarms being given is mind blowing to say the least.
Changes of attitude are going to have to happen, and now that Islam has gotten such a strong foothold there those changes are going to be have to made with the resulting bloody, violent riots sure to happen.
The fears written above are true enough.. so there is cause for great concern, but the Europeans--at the least the ones I talk with, are waking up. That is a step in the right direction. Now we need them to take action....

Greg, I think you mean "marshmallow." Anyway, the "marshmallow approach" to immigration in Western Europe is the end of the fabulous Europe we have known. I'm glad I've already visited Paris, Lyon, Florence, Rome and many smaller towns in both France and Italy. Without being beseiged by beards and burqas.

Are Europeans actually waking up to the Muslim threat to their way of life? I don't thing they are, not yet. The political movement to stop Muslim immigration still holds not sway on the overall public sentiment.
How much tolerance must they show to their intolerant immigrants? If Muslims can show tolerance for their host countries, that would be great. But the reverse is taking place where the children of immigrants become MORE radicalized, not less. Why is that? Have Europeans been exposed to the teachings of Mohammed, the Koran and Hadiths? Look under the covers of deceit.

We are spearheading a popular movement which resists the imposition of Sharia Law on this continent.

It is a shame, really. I certainly can understand why people are called to be so, "RELIGIOUSLY CORRECT". After all, many innocent groups were persecuted unjustly, and it is only natural that we all feel so sorry about it! But that does not mean that there does not exist a mainstream religion and pseudo national identity, which are either psychotic, or evil, and, in any case, unfixable! Look! The Koran and all those densely populated main-stream religions that operate solely by claiming that every word in the Koran is from God and so is perfect and can not be changed no matter what, even though said book commands the murder of totally innocent persons (anyone can see this, it is in the book! Take a look!)- are intrinsically and unchangeably psychotic or evil or both - totally unfixable! So, why doesn't someone somewhere besides me, write this truth so many people can read it, or at least post it so that this life saving truth has a chance of getting out of it's prison named, "Religious correctness!" The whole world has already tried to make peace with another Political/religious system called National Socialism, and it was only half as stupid and mean as Islam. Our life, and that of our families depend on it - everyone is silent, but no one dare disagree with me publically - the truth is the truth and you know it!

I assume you take a somewhat anti-British tone as a hangover from the Age of Imperialism: that was over two generations ago and is not a phase of history likely to repeat itself. I suggest you forget old antagonisms in the face of the shared problems that the UK and India (along with most of the rest of the world)have, concerning Islam.

Thats a shame, a lot of places would be better off if they were still under British rule. Look at Zimbabwe for example. Too bad imperialism had to end.
This shows that Europe (as well as the US, Canada and Australia) must adopt a two-pronged approach. 1: Ban Muslim immigration while 2: welcoming ex-Muslims like Jami and Hirsi-Ali who are willing to speak out.
These ex-Muslims are one of our greatest resources. During the Cold War, it was ex-Communists who woke the US up to real nature of the Red threat. Former Communist operatives such as Whittaker Chambers revealed how deep the Soviet penetration of the US actually was. We have an identical situation now with Islam. For this reason alone, we must support ex-Muslims like Jami in every way possible.
As the people of Europe slowly awaken to the nightmare that their elites have created, it will be interesting to see how those European, governing elites will handle the imminent crisis. I've heard that despite the rejection of the E.U. constitution by the countries in which referendums were held, it is about to be ratified anyway. Is that democracy? It appears to me that the E.U. is probably the most egregious culprit in the immigration mess in Europe, led by perfidious E.U. advocates from various European nations whose support for supreme E.U. rule far outweigh their loyalty to their own countries.
It certainly would appear that influential Eurocrats are creating a new Europe to comply with provisions agreed upon between the E.U. and Middle Eastern, muslim countries. They have sold out their people and their nations to islamic tyrants and it would appear that nothing and nobody is going to stop them. It would be fascinating to know what price the OIC paid for the European continent, and exactly who collected the proceeds.

I don't think you really know your history. Gladstone and the Liberal party was virtually apoplexy over the vile Turk. Unfortunately reality if we can call it so with hindsight had the upper hand and Disraeli fearing the threat of a Russian presence in Constantinople on our trade routes to India scotched Russias hopes. You must remember that poor peasants christian as well as muslim usually have very little to offer in terms of trade, Gibraltar Malta and the Suez canal were not in British hands for nothing. If I remember Disraeli pick up Cyprus to ensure that we had control of the eastern Mediterranean as well during the peace deal. Now as for brown nosing we the British were fairly indiscriminate who we hung or shot if it got in the way of trade. With a name like Shiva I assume that you are Indian and Hindu, during the Indian Mutiny 1857 we shot Bahadur Shah's the last king of Delhis Children in cold blood, and shipped him off to a ignomous exile in Burma and stabled our horses in the grand mosque. Kitchener was certainly not brown nosing when he machine gunned 15,000 muslims at Omdurman dug up the Mahdi and shipped his head back to Egypt for further research. I never did find out what happened to it. He also to exacerbate his criminal act laid out Khartoum in the shape of the Union Jack. Check it out on Google Earth. Brown nosing I don't think so. There are quite a few errors in this article. To start with, Jami isn't a "right-wing" member of the Dutch parliament. He was a member of the Dutch Social-Democratic Party.
And "heroyalwhyness", that illegal immigrants issue wasn't Balkenende's idea. He opposed it, but under pressure of the Dutch Social-Democratic Party (PvdA) he wend ahead with it.
Well, the PvdA got their illegal immigrants, but in the opinion polls support for them is evaporated. If were elections now, the PvdA would get 19 of the 150 seats in parliament. This is huge, considering the fact that the PvdA was the biggest party in the Netherlands taking about 50 of the 150 seats.
The Christian-Democrats and the anti-immigration minister Rita Verdonk with her to-be-founded party "Proud of Holland" are leading the polls now and when this government collapses over a raging conflict on a labor-related subject, the days of the pro-immigration parties in Holland will be over.
