VIENNA, Oct 31 (KUNA) -- Head of the Green Party and National Spokesman Alexander Van der Bellen said he is against the attempts of some bodies to associate Islam with terrorism.Der Bellen told KUNA that it is in everybody's favor that 400,000 Moslems living in Austria do not turn into hostages as a result of the acts of a few extremist Moslems in the country.
He said the Austrian Green Party, the third largest party in Austria, has expressed its support for the Islamic community in many gatherings.
The eminent politician praised the initiative of the Austrian President Heinz Fischer to organize a reception for the representatives of the Islamic community in Austria and considered it an example to promote Inter-religious and cultural coexistence.

the left realise that to defeat conservatism and the right wing they need the jihadists. socialism is failing and i believe that with the rise of nationalsim the only stopping power that they have will be an incorporation of islam into socialism, such as galloway's "respect party". a merger of socialism and islam.

I think recent events confirm that it's all of them... not simply Green, Democrat, Socialist or any other variety of Leftist.
It's the Republicans and neo-cons and the Labor Party and every other person still in power that uses pre-9/11 models to explain the world.
The paradigm has shifted and leadership needs to be replaced with those who have a new model of the world in place.
No doubt Van der Bellen would be perfectly happy to associate Christianity with terrorism, that is, the Crusades, the Inquisition, witch-burnings, etc. Meanwhile, Islam, to the Greens, can't be anything but a "religion of peace."

I have to weigh in on this because for years now I have been trying to get the Greens to understand the concept of jihad. They just don't get it. All they care about is pressuring the government into opening all borders to (illegal) immigrants.

400,000 muslims? I went on holiday to Austria 20 years ago. Lovely country. Cheaper than Switzerland but with the same scenic beauty of the lakes and mountains. Not to mention, the historic cities of Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck.
Very homogenous back then. Not sure if it would be now. :-(

It is the story about the man who tried to enter the US Embassy in Vienna with a backpack bomb. Fortunately, the nails set off the metal detector. He also had a Koran in his backpack but the police have no idea of the Bosnian's religious persuasion.
The world MSM was largely silent on this story. I think the Greens in Austria are pandering to the Turk vote, just as Dhimmicrats in the USA pander to the Mexican vote.

I tried to link an article from a Vienna, Austria newspaper. The article referred to some Green Party leaders in Berlin, Germany, who accused several German archbishops of "hate speech". The bishops had been quoted on issues of family values and sexual cohabitation.

It´s just some 300 years ago the muslims couldn´t take Wiena by force. Not for lack of trying, mind you! Wonder what the wienans would have said if one of their leading politicians at that time would have said: "Hey! Let's live in cultural co-existance with these guy´s on the outside of our wall. They´re only trying to destroy us because of our islamophobia. I think we need some multi-culturalism here and we all can live in peace".
I guess green would have taken an un-voluntarily flight over the wall at that time.
To my knowledge no muslim has ever made an apology for the atempt at that time to conquer Wiena, or the other parts of Europe the muslims of that time took or given us an explanation why it was wrong then and will never happend today or ever again. Yet, the gates of Wiena are opend today to muslims.
I wonder when the powers-that-be, in Wiena and Austria, will see the irony in this? It migh be a prolonged waiting period, I fear. But not as long a waiting period as for a muslim declaration denouncing jihad to be forth-coming, 'cause the Austrians will be forced by reality to re-evaluate this farytale-policy in the near future. Like the rest of Europe.

I'm really quite disappointed in the appearance of this thread at this time. If Van der Bellen's position is represented accurately here by KUNA then it is absolutely deplorable, but KUNA - Kuwait News Agency (!) - has proven notoriously unreliable in the past. Have you forgotten this thread?

It seems to me also that there's been at least one other episode of misinformation from KUNA as well (although I can't recall specifics at the moment, and maybe I'm mistaken altogether about this. Perhaps other readers can fill in some of the blanks here).
In any case, I'm reminded, at this point, of one of my favourite George Dubya Bushisms:

Having done a Google news search for this story I can tell you that, as of the time of my posting this, no such information is being carried by any other news source. Until it is verified by a REPUTABLE news source, I will not give any credence to this story - and neither should you!

It is pretty obvious that the head of Austria's Green Party is ignorant of his country's history. Twice, the Turkish invaders were beaten back at Vienna - in 1529 and 1683. Had Vienna fallen in either siege, its citizens would have been slaughtered in the kind of sadistic orgy which had been seen at Constantinople in 1453 and every other city that had the misfortune to fall to these sadistic butchers, and furthermore, many more towns and cities in Central and Western Europe would have gone on to suffer that same fate. Even in both retreats from Vienna, the surviving Turks still tortured and massacred thousands of helpless Austrian townsfolk and villagers, who had the misfortune to live on the Turks' retreat routes.
