HOGANAS, Sweden (CNN) -- Swedish artist Lars Vilks says all he's doing is taking a stand in the name of artistic expression. But because of that stand, on this afternoon he's lying low -- on the ground, in fact -- looking for bombs under his car.
Al Qaeda has put a $100,000 price on his head and offered an extra $50,000 for anyone who murders him by slitting his throat after the eccentric artist and sculptor drew a cartoon depicting the Prophet Mohammed as a dog.
"I don't think it should not be a problem to insult a religion, because it should be possible to insult all religions in a democratic way, " says Vilks from his home in rural Sweden.
"If you insult one, then you should insult the other ones."
His crude, sketched caricature shows the head of Prophet Mohammed on the body of a dog. Dogs are considered unclean by conservative Muslims, and any depiction of the prophet is strictly forbidden.
Vilks, who has been a controversial artist for more than three decades in Sweden, says his drawing was a calculated move, and he wanted it to elicit a reaction.
"That's a way of expressing things. If you don't like it, don't look at it. And if you look at it, don't take it too seriously. No harm done, really," he says.
When it's suggested that might prove an arrogant -- if not insulting -- way to engage Muslims, he is unrelenting, even defiant.
"No one actually loves the truth, but someone has to say it," he says.
Vilks, a self-described atheist, points out he's an equal opportunity offender who in the past sketched a depiction of Jesus as a pedophile.
Obviously, that's appalling, to say the least. But if nothing else, it offers an instructive basis for comparison of how the two religions' respective followers handle being offended. Not to mention that the cartoon of Jesus (whom CNN afforded no honorifics, unlike Muhammad) is far worse.
Still one could argue Vilks should have known better because of what happened in Denmark in 2005, when a cartoonist's depictions of the prophet sparked violent protests in the Muslim world and prompted death threats against that cartoonist's life.
Vilks' cartoon, which was published in August by the Swedish newspaper Nerikes Allehanda, hasn't reached that level of global protests, although it has stoked plenty of outrage.
Muslims in Sweden demanded an apology from the newspaper, which has stood by Vilks on his freedom of expression stand. Pakistan and Iran also lodged formal protests with Sweden.
One Swedish Muslim woman who lives just an hour-and-a-half drive from Vilks said she hopes to make good on the al Qaeda threat and slaughter Vilks like a lamb.
"I can do this in the name of Allah, and I will not fail. I could slaughter him in the name of Allah," says the woman who identified herself only as Amatullah.
She adds, "If I get the opportunity."
Dressed in a black burqa from head to toe and uttering death threat after death threat, the woman -- a wife and mother -- says she is defending her religion and her prophet if she manages to kill Vilks.
Amatullah has already been fined for issuing death threats. Still, she claims she will never stop taunting him.
Swedish police, who declined CNN's request for an interview, have advised Vilks to abandon his home.
But the artist still works there by day and travels to a safe house by night. Vilks knows his defiance could get him killed, but he says his art is worth dying for.
As he sits at his computer, his phone buzzes with a text message. Another death threat has just come in, this one from Pakistan.
"I will kill you, you son a bitch," he reads.

Swedish laws obviously are lacking. The behavior of this woman, and what it reveals about her attitudes and beliefs, show that she cannot possibly be a loyal citizen of the Infidel nation-state of Sweden, nor can she possibly understand its legal and political institutions. By mistake, she was awarded citizenship. It need not be forever. This Amatullah, and all others who reveal that they do not accept the laws of Sweden, the individual rights, including freedom of speech and similar rights, and who engage in death threats for which there is good reason to take seriously, have no business being citizens of Sweden. The legal mechanism whereby such people can be stripped of their citizenship (her single name makes me think that place is Afghanistan or Bangladesh), and then shipped back to country of origin, needs to be put in place by intelligent Swedes. There must be some.

Perhaps you could use these interviews to say that the Muslim world's inability to open itself to free inquiry is the reason that so many countries are unable to prosper outside of the oil spigot. You might note that the embrace of outer-directed jihad is a tenet of mainstream Islam and that people -- especially leaders -- should stop imagining otherwise.
You might say true things and be arrested, though, given the madness of Europe in general, Sweden in particular.

It may be in part that print journalists are always trying to condense their headlines. But this is somehing I have noticed more and more, also--the idea that Mohammed is "the Prophet", rather than "the Islamic Prophet"--the idea that we all should treat Islam not just with the respect most of us would proffer to any religion, but that we should conform to all of its proscriptions and niceties. Clearly, this is the road to Dhimmitude. That is something that Lars Viks is trying to prevent.

Slightly off-topic: in San Fransico a few days ago the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a campy Gay activist group, showed up at the church where the Archbishop was giving communion. The Archbishop seemed flustered by their appearance (they were all in full outrageous make-up and "nun" drag) and gave each of them communion.

Well, Bill O'Reilly covered the incident yesterday. It was ugly, but I think overstated things by refering to the act as an "atrocity" (after all, there was no violence). But the comments he and his fellow pundits made are telling --he said that whatever one thought of Orthodox Jews and Muslims, at least they stood up for their religions. Then several pundits chimed in with the opinion that if they had tried a similar stunt in a Mosque that we would not even be having this conversation, because they would have been set upon by the Muslim congregation and murdered.
I imagine in most cases they would be correct. I don't believe these are tactics the rest of us really would want to emulate, no matter what the provocation.

The writer is missing several points, not just one. Such as, what happened to freedom of speech? What happened to artistic expression? Why does one have to fear a religion? Why would a reporter admit (certainly implied) to cowarding to that religion
The reporter is admitting in his comment 'he should have known better', because 'last year it sparked violent protests and death threats' that the reporter is biased to suppress free speech because he fears retribution.
The reporter then goes further by implying that the muslim that he interviewed has a 'right and will carry through' on the death threats.
This reporter is showing and admitting that he would never report the truth if his own safety was at risk.
The reporter shows that he himself is a Islama-phobe, he really fears Islam.
Shouldn't this have been a learning moment?

Yes, the site of Mohammed images is interesting. One page purports to display notes sent from detractors and supporters. I say "purports" because... well, it's hard to believe that all the Muslims upset about the image of their Poobah cannot express themselves with even a modicum of intelligence.

When most Christians read this slander against Christ they feel sad for Vilks and pray for him, worrying about his eternal soul. When Vilks attacks Muhammed in a far less insulting way, he has to go into hiding from death threats. Only the blind or willfully ignorant will not see this.

As a Canadian, I am reassured by the fact that for every 10 or so americans I contact online at least 5 or 6 of them see Islam as the problem and the threat. When I contact Swedes on the online forum I have never met only one out of over twenty who would agree with that belief. Most of them called me a 'racist'. The Swedes as most of western europe need to wake up and demonstrate this 'intellgence' (common sense really)! Sweden should be ashamed of itself that it lets so many gang rapes of nonmuslim women on its street without really trying to stop them more than just telling the citizens not to travel in certain areas. Ridiculous.
