Nigerian Islamic court bans satirical play on Sharia law

Islamic Tolerance Alert from AFP (thanks to Louis):

KANO, Nigeria (AFP) - An Islamic court in northern Nigeria has banned a play written by a civil rights activist which satirises the implementation of Sharia law in 12 mainly Muslim states, court papers show.

The upper Sharia court in the Tudun Wada neighbourhood of the northern city of Kaduna issued an order restraining Shehu Sani from selling or circulating his play, "Phantom Crescent".

The order, which also bans performances of the play, was issued October 3 in response to a motion filed by Concerned Sharia Forum, a pro-Sharia group based in Zaria, 70 kilometres (43 miles) north of Kaduna.

This court grants an order restraining the defendant "from selling or in any way circulating the book titled "Phantom Crescent," the order, received by AFP Sunday, read.

"I have received the court order which we will comply with but which we will challenge legally,", Sani told AFP on the telephone from Kaduna .

The play is a satire depicting how politicians, especially governors of the states implementing the Islamic Sharia legal system, use it "as a tool for looting the public treasury with impunity and for stifling opposition," Sani said.

"I have contacted my lawyers who are prepared to fight this infringement on my fundamental right to freedom of expression," he said.

Good luck with that.

So they've responded by, errrrr, stifling the opposition.

It's a bit like the other line "Don't dare say islam isn't peaceful, or we'll kill you"

"There is nothing funny in Islam." -Ayatollah Khomeini.

God's driest joke.

You might be an islamophobe if you believe in freedom of expression.

You might be an Islamophobe is your head is still attached to your shoulders.

(For the time being.)

Come on - Edinburgh Festival organisers, Adelaide Festival organisers...get in touch with Mr Shehu Sani ASAP. Book his play for the 'fringe' - sign him up, and a team of actors, no advance publicity, whisk them into the country, and wham! guerilla theatre.

(Hey, if you're really brave, put it on back to back with Voltaire's classic Mahomet: or, Fanaticism; or that other thing from Pakistan, Burqavaganza).

Come on, some avant-garde indy filmmaker with guts and brains - move heaven and earth to get Mr Shehu Sani's play and turn it into a film. Turn it loose on the net.

We need underground/ samizdat theatre and films. Guerilla theatre. Mock this Mohammedan madness uphill and downhill.

Dhimmiwatchers - how many of us know actors, playwrights, directors, theatre people, movie people? Those who do - send them this story and tell them: THIS is what Islam will do to YOU if it takes over.

I'd like a copy of that flick.

......the old one was just being honest.....

exstgbrown-

"...the old one was just being honest..."

And patently ridiculous.

His funeral procession, where his corpse was knocked out of its coffin, was as funny as anything from a Monty Python skit.

There is nothing but funny in Islam.

(As in funny in the head.)

I once had an English teacher who used to say, "not funny ha ha, but funny peculiar." That old demon was about as peculiar as they come. There was not a glimmer of humanity in that wicked man; his eyes were black pools of pure malevolence.
