Now I'm still not quite sure what to make of this article, but, I think you'll agree, that the headline is curious if nothing else.
By Sheila Musaji in the American Muslim:
The American Muslim has supported the Jewish Voices for Peace Petition against intolerance and Islamophobia, and encouraged our readers to sign. This petition initiated by JVP and signed by individuals from many faith groups denounces the current Islamo Fascism Awareness Week being held on 200 college campuses in the U.S. On October 19th we put a note in the Editors Column reminding Muslims that this is their issue and they need to get involved and support this petition.
This morning I checked the petition site to see if there were many more signatures and was pleased to see that the number of signatures is increasing, and then took a quick glance through some of the comments, and went from feeling hopeful that there were more bridge building people in the world than there were extremists to feeling dismayed and hopeless.
Signatory #1534 had left a comment: This plea is a joke!! Look at what the Muslims say: a call for murder on a plea against bigotry and intolerance?? If anything it only shows Muslims don’t deserve that rights. Geez… You people are oblivious. Respect is earned. This is not how you earn it. Why should we tolerate an intolerant religion with intolerant bigoted followers who are bent to kill us??
I wondered what this was referring to, and then scanned backwards a few pages on the list and saw a rash of supposed Muslims or pseudo-Muslims (at least they have Muslim names) using the petition site as a means to leave derogatory comments about Jews, Christians, America, etc.
Here is what these Pseudo-Muslims said:
#1513 Bahr Ahmad Bahr Gaza Palestine, As acting Palestinian Legislative Council Speaker (appointed by the elected Pslestinian government) please note my speech on Palestinian TV from April 13, 2007: “Oh Allah, vanquish the Jews and their supporters. Oh Allah, vanquish the Americans and their supporters. Oh Allah, count their numbers, and kill them all, down to the very last one”
#1525 Mahmoud Al Hasan Pakistan, Of course there is no such thing such thing as Islamo Fascism. By the way,in my position as leader of the Hezb-ul-Mujahedeen, a group aligned to the Jamaat-e-Islami party, I was quoted yesterday as saying “Benazir Bhutto was totally talking like an infidel. What should be the reaction of jihadis? They should definitely kill her. She is an enemy of Islam. She is an enemy of jihadis.”
#1527 Dr. Ismail Radwan Gaza Palestine, Yes, these terrible bigotd seek to spread hatred instead of peace. I hope you have seen me on official Palesitian TV on March 30,2007 when I said:. “The Hour – the Islamic Resurrection and End of Time– is literally dependent on the killing of Jews by Muslims. The remaining Jews will unsuccessfully attempt to hide, as the rocks and trees will expose them, calling out “there is a Jew behind me, kill him!” 3. “Palestine… will be liberated through the rifle”
#1528 Anjem Choudary, Attorney London, UK, Islam is a Religion of Peace. The racists of Islamo Fascism Awareness week will pay the price. Those who insult it should be beheaded. In my press release of October 2000 (after a shahid elminated a local Jew youngster) I stated “We would like to make it abundantly clear that it is an Islamic obligation upon Muslims everywhere to support the Jihad against those who fight Muslims anywhere in the world or who occupy Muslim land and that this support must be financial, physical, military or verbal”
#1530 Ahmad Bahar Palestine, Allah, take hold of the Jews and their allies, Allah, take hold of the Americans and their allies… Allah, count them and kill them to the last one and don’t leave even one.
These criminals do not represent me, they do not represent any Muslims I know, and they certainly don’t represent Islam. As an American Muslim I am deeply ashamed that anyone calling themselves a Muslim could show such disrespect to the very people who are holding out the hand of friendship, and allying themselves with Muslims in a common cause against intolerance. I am also angry at whoever did this.
I'll leave it at that.
