San Jose man sent weapons to his brother, a jihadist in the Philippines

Fraternal charity. "Judge: No bail for San Jose man charged with aiding terror plot," from The Associated Press (thanks to Dav):

SAN JOSE, California: A judge agreed with federal prosecutors Tuesday that a California man with alleged ties to terrorists in the Philippines must remain jailed pending his trial.

U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel ruled that San Jose resident Rahmat Abdhir poses a threat to the community where he has spent 17 years with a wife and four children who are all U.S. citizens because he knowingly sent money and military gear to his brother, a high-ranking member of an al-Qaida off-shoot.

"There are no conditions or combinations of conditions that reasonably will assure the safety of the community" if Abdhir is released on bail, Fogel wrote in a 5-page ruling.

Abdhir, 43, a computer engineer, was arrested Aug. 2 after a federal grand jury indicted him for allegedly sending his brother weapons, camouflage clothing and nearly 30 radios — parts of which were discovered to be timing devices for a bomb that killed five people in the Philippines last year.

His brother, Zulkifli Abdhir, 41, is considered a "specially designated global terrorist" by the U.S. government for his role with Jemaah Islamiyah, an al-Qaida affiliate in the Philippines'. he remains at large and a $5 million (€3.53 million) reward has been offered for his arrest.

This story should, should should send another of thousands of wake-up calls about Islam, but it probably won't. This man came to the US for a better life and found it, as a computer engineer. I presume that he lived in nice home in a safe, ordered neighborhood with his wife and family, his children went to good schools, he enjoyed an abundance of food, recreations and vacations of his choosing..the good life. Despite that, he hates America and aids death and destruction. Look closer..he was probably also funding jihadists in the US too. I can hope that he will get a long sentence, but I am doubtful. I am sure that his religion of peace will be brought into the equation, and how he has been victimized because of it.

"Abdhir, 43, a computer engineer, ..."

.....proverty , no education, leading a boring life, et al...do not come into play....they are valid Muslims practicising Islam....

I guess the American Civil Liberties Union will be defending this man in court.

According to the indictment, Rahmat Abdhir is a software engineer who work(ed) in Sunnyvale, California. According to LinkedIn, a member of that name works for a company called "Applied Identity." http://www.linkedin.com/ppl/webprofile?action=vmi&id=6843809&authToken=njfi&authType=name&trk=ppro_viewmore

Applied Identity has an office in Sunnyvale. http://www.appliedidentity.com/company/contact-us.shtml

It's a startup making information security products. This type of product, if successful, gets used by global businesses and, perhaps, governement agencies, including the military.

Muslims are all over the hi-tech industry. It is illegal to ask about religious beliefs in a job interview.

Treason and terrorism deserve execution.

Or we deserve what we get for not acting.

This is the sort of thing that frustrates me no end.

i can understant that I am likely to miss all but the most major jihad-related stories from Thailand, or Nigeria, or the Gran Chaco triangle of Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentine.

But Rahmat Abdhir lives just a few miles away from me. I Googled his name--the story was covered in the local San Jose Mercury, but not in the much larger San Francisco Chronicle or the Oakland Tribune, or any of the other regional papers. Likewise, I saw nothing on the local news broadcasts.

I've had this happen over and over, where I have gotten a story here on JW that has not been covered by local press, or only in the most cursory fashion.

Have other readers of JW found this to be the case?
