CORRECTION: A Muslim has written in to tell me that sevenn-year-old girls are indeed required to wear the veil. I have seen other sources putting the beginning of this requirement at an older age. This story has girls aged 8 beginning to wear it.

Seven-year-old girls are not required to wear the veil in any case. In other words, some adults are using this girl to make a political point. And that political point is that Muslims will not conform to the mores of Spanish society.

....I can envision some clever student taking the school to court demanding a change in the dress code ( the student wants to wear those baggy pants that reveal the flowered underwear he is wearing, a teeshirt that is two sizes too big, tennis shoes without the laces and a baseball cap idolizing his favorite gangster rapper)...
