That would be siding with the occupier. But the Muslim Scholars' Association doesn't seem to have noticed all of Al-Qaeda's Islamic heresies -- you know, the ones that every Western non-Muslim TV talking head knows all about. "We reject their ideas," says Al-Dhari, but that is not quite the same thing as saying that they've betrayed or "hijacked" Islam. Indeed, if he really thought they have done so, it's doubtful he'd be urging cooperation with them. From AFP (thanks to Twostellas):
BAGHDAD (AFP) - Leading Iraqi Sunni cleric Harith al-Dhari has urged Iraqis not to join US forces in fighting al-Qaeda, arguing that by doing so they are siding with the occupier."A decision to stand beside the occupying enemy in order to achieve a wish to stay in Iraq under the pretext of destroying al-Qaeda is neither accepted legally nor on patriotic or rational grounds," said Dhari, head of the influential Muslim Scholars' Association.
"We do not accept the acts of al-Qaeda," Dhari said in an interview with Qatari-based television channel al-Jazeera posted Tuesday on the website of the Muslim Scholars' Association, Iraq's main Sunni clerics' organisation.
"We reject their ideas but al-Qaeda remains part of us and we are part of it. Ninety per cent of al-Qaeda members are now Iraqis," he added. "We can talk to them. We can reform them." Dhari is living in exile in Amman.
"We can talk to them. We can reform them."
Sure-keep on thinking that as the blade cuts into your neck. This idiot sounds like a lot of infidels in the West who think the Koran is all peace and beauty. I guess such stupidity is truly universal.
"We reject their ideas but al-Qaeda remains part of us and we are part of it."
This is the attitude of most so-called Muslim moderates, and moderate groups.
But Western leaders just don't seem to get it.
"We reject their ideas but al-Qaeda remains part of us and we are part of it."
He rejects al-Qaeda but it's still a part of him. Which part is still a part of him? Which ideas does he reject?
This man is head of the "Muslim Scholars(?) Association". Has he ever heard Mohammed's edict that "the ink of the scholar is worth more than the blood of the martyr"? What are Muslim scholars doing to further the cause of peace?
Looks like the ummah is in dire need of a "No Madrassa Left Behind" policy if this fool really believes what he says and is considered a scholar.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
(something Bush never understood)
The head of the Muslim Scholars
A decision to stand by the forces that deposed the murderous and rapacious despot Saddam Hussein; and the forces that are fighting the al-Qaeda foreign invaders from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Syria, et al; and the forces that are busy building new roads, schools, and electric power grids for the grateful and peaceful Iraqi public, is neither accepted on patriotic or rational grounds.
Al Qaeda is drilling into the eyesockets and sawing off the heads of Iraqis on a daily basis, but to stand against them would be unpatriotic and irrational.
When delineating between those horrendous and literal practitioners of their vile blood stained religion, and those who are not members of Islam but who are nevertheless proving their willingness to sacrifice their lives and pay staggering heaps of treasure to save Muslims from themselves and those horrors which always are attendant on Islam, the Muslims always seem to find it a very difficult choice to make. Muslims tend to side with the Muslims when push comes to shove.
By my lights -- Muslims are welcome to the horrors their sinister worship encourages. Better them than us. But this equation only works by severely curtailing their access to and freedom within "Dar ul Harb" -- the land of the "infidels" - our homelands which they consider to be Islam's war fields and killing fields.
If we largely restrict the loutish animals on the farm from trampling in those clean places prepared and maintained for the benefit of the humans, then problems like mud being smeared around by pigs, or feces on Grandma's carpet, or cattle trampling the well maintained gardens are largely non-existent.
It is the sheer fact that Muslims reside here in the West that lends such vicious weight to their Islamic Jihad.
Restrict Muslims to their respective cess pools of origin and those kennels and stables of degradation from which they emerge, and Jihad becomes a mostly meaningless tantrum by Islamic maniacs against other inmates in the asylum.
It is not our fight to fix their unfixable religion. It is not our fight to fix their heinous societies. It is not our lot in the universe to continue to suffer their insults, their betrayals, their sedition, and their hatred, for it is Islam and not we who make them live like animals. Why even permit them to lash out at us for their utter and complete failure to thrive???
Muslim scholars. Oxymoron.

Bravo - well said!
"what about all those sunni towns we freed from the al qaeda reign of terror over the past few years? at the cost of scores of American soldiers' lives, I might add. You'd think that this sacrifice would have bought us some sunni goodwill. Dang, but this iraqi situation is a lot less clear-cut than I was led to believe before the invasioin, and a lot more complex than I can deal with. Enough of reality! Time to re-enter Mister Roger's Land of Make-Believe. National reconciliation in iraq is just around the corner."
GWB
....lately, Al-Qaeda sure is concerned about the new American allies....something must be working.....yep...something must be working...

Keith Ellison needs to hear your words. He thinks jihad is a good thing and that those who go against Allah are "misguided".
He also thinks the answer is to bring more Muslims here and let them see how Americans live and that we aren't the savages their media portrays.
Which of these exchange students will become the next Qutb? Sayyid Qutb came to the US to study American teaching methods at the Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley, Colorado.
The attention Americans paid to their lawns convinced him that we were selfish and materialistic. He was scandalized by the "seductive atmosphere" at a church dance. He must have been left apoplectic at the sight of women's legs. Football and boxing told him Americans were violent, explaining why the US was brutal and aggressive abroad.
If Qutb drew these conclusions about American society in 1948, imagine the new exchange student dealing with Britney Spears, the Playboy Channel and the heightened individualism of American society six decades later.
Why are we allowing our presumed ally Jordan to hurt our interests by not snapping this a hole who is hurting us ?
For that matter, why do we tolerate these 'allies' permitting our flag burnings.
islam is truly evil.
Let me see if I got this straight. My brother is a homicidal maniac and has repeatedly killed and tortured others including members of my family because they were siding with non-family members trying to stop him. My Uncle Habib, who is living in another country safe from my killer brother says, "Hey, what's up with you guys! The famiy is supposed to stick together no matter what. Don't look for help outside the family, join him in his killing spree of those trying to help you and he will quit killing the family.
As Soupy Sales once said, "Blood is thicker than water. But so is toothpaste!" Harith al-Dhari and other like him make about as much sense as Soupy.
Why is this sage and intrepid "leader" in exile? Why isn't he in Iraq, offering spiritual guidance to the oppressed, minority Sunnis? Because he is a typical islamic coward and a quintessential islamic cleric; one who incites the masses to hysteria with fatwas and other assorted islamic invective. The CIA should track him down and do what they do to dangerous enemies of civilization. When they get through with him, they should pursue hundreds more islamic firebrands who encourage rabid muslim fanatics to pursue jihad, terrorism, and martyrdom. The Saudi cleric who sanctioned the murder of millions of American children should be first on their list.
This cowardly cleric, hiding in Jordan, is essentially telling Iraqi Sunnis that they should fight with al Qaeda against the coalition or sit back and allow Iraqi al Qaeda members to wreak as much death and destruction as they see fit. AFter all, al Qaeda might kill innocent muslims but they're far superior to infidel occupiers and should be supported by their fellow Sunnis. This is typical islamic logic---muslims must stick together and defeat the evil crusaders, even if it means the deaths of thousands of muslim bystanders. I won't call them "innocent muslims", because that would be an oxymoron.
Silence these clerics and half the battle will be won.
