DAMASCUS, Syria — A high-ranking Syrian official confirmed that Israel's airstrike last month in northern Syria hit a nuclear facility, according to a document obtained Wednesday by FOX News.
"Israel was the fourth-largest exporter of weapons of mass destruction and a violator of other nations' airspace, and it had taken action against nuclear facilities, including the 6 July attack in Syria," Syrian representative Bassam Darwish is quoted in the document as saying.
Diplomats familiar with the document cannot explain why July 6 was invoked, instead of Sept. 6, the date both countries say an incident occurred. A State Department source tells FOX News the best explanation is that Darwish misspoke.
The document, released by the General Assembly's Department of Public Information, recounted Tuesday's proceedings at the annual gathering of the U.N.'s Disarmament and International Security Committee.
What is clear is that this is the first time Syria has acknowledged its nuclear efforts.
One U.S. delegate told colleagues he could not believe his ears when the Syrian diplomat made his statement and that the resulting document was close to verbatim, and another source told FOX News the document reinforces what people heard [the Syrian representative] say in the actual debate.
Syria already has disowned the remarks, adding "such facilities do not exist in Syria."
The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency, SANA, quoting an unnamed Foreign Ministry source, said the U.N. press release misquoted the diplomat and that Syria had made it clear that there are no such facilities in Syria.
Syrian President Bashar Assad said earlier this month that the target is an "unused military building."

Since Assad verifys that this was an 'unused military' building, then Assad will have no problem allowing in British and American inspectors to inspect this site.

Found, un-found WMD, in some place that never exhisted, from a place it never was. So a risk was taken to destroy something that never was, at a place that isn't there. Something seems to have happened, but no one seems to know how something could have happened to, something that isn't there, at a place no one seems sure where.
How could this be from N.Korea? Surplus from a Reactor that hasn't been dismantled yet???
Is it possible that No Nuclear Material was found at this place nothing was at? Were some shown some other location that does not exhist?

I read in jpost.com that the State Department put the brakes on the raid for months, until the Israelis finally did it on their own initiative. It was feared that the raid would be destabilizing, as though Syrian nuclear weapons wouldn't be.
Israel should bomb this facility before it is too late. Hopefully, the Syrians have not yet prepared for an attack on it.
jewdog: It was actually the Bush Administration and not the State Department (unfortunately two very different things) that asked Israel to hold off for a while until there was absolute, incontrovertible evidence of Syrian culpability here. This is the direct result of the unrealistic expectation that now exists that free and democratic countries cannot take action against the tyrannies of the world until they are 100% certain of misdeeds by the thugs that run still way too many nations.
President Bush assumed some five years ago, quite correctly I would argue, that Saddam Hussein was highly likely still in possession of WMDs. No major intelligence agency even remotely contradicted this assumption before March of 2003. Well, no WMDs have as of yet shown up in Iraq and all the Bush and American haters out there have now made it a requirement that no action against the brutes of the earth can be taken until certain knowledge is existent. The Bush Administration was only too aware of how badly it was burned by faulty intelligence and wanted absolute knowledge this time. That's why Israel struck in September rather than two months earlier. Thank all the kick-American-firsters in the West for this delay. Bush just didn't want to get burned again and told the Israelis as much. I for one don't blame him. And kudos to the IDF for a job well done.

The only reason the Muslim World is not outraged by Israel destroying Syria's nuclear facility is because there were no reports of Qur'ans burning in the aftermath.
