Sharia Alert: Dumb laws, especially those with draconian penalties, can cause additional rash, desperate, and costly behavior. "Young Muslim Couple Causes Five Car Pileup While Fleeing Police for Making Out," from the Associated Press:
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — A young Muslim couple tried to speed off when Malaysian police caught them making out in their car but got into an accident, causing a five-car pile up, a report said Wednesday.
A police patrol car spotted the couple locked in an intimate embrace late Monday in their car parked at a hypermarket in Muar town in southern Johor state, The Star newspaper said.
As the patrol car neared them, the couple sped out of the car park onto a main road and collided with a passing car, causing three other vehicles to crash, the report said.
The unidentified couple, both in their 20s, have been detained and the man has been booked for reckless driving, it said.
Muar traffic police officer Lim Aik Sin told the daily that the couple have been referred to the district Islamic religious department. The man is a factory worker in nearby Malacca state while the woman, from Johor, studies in a college in Kuala Lumpur, Lim was quoted as saying.
Lim couldn't be reached for further details and other Muar police officers declined to comment.
Unmarried Muslim couples found alone together in a private place can be charged for "khalwat," or "close proximity," which is a crime under Malaysia's Islamic laws and carries a jail sentence of up to two months.
And that's what makes this story newsworthy: It's not clear from the article exactly how "intimate" the couple was, but their simply being alone together was, under Sharia law, all the police needed to pursue them.
Malaysia is the example of "moderate Islam" some people trot out over and over again. But it already (religious police are new on the job) appears the Malaysian muttawa/basij lite is just as bad as the real thing.
The Islamic Reformation is well under way, Talibanish regimes springing up everywhere. But I don't think this is what the advocates of reformation have in mind.
It is good thing no one was seriously hurt, otherwise this event could have been deemed as another incident of Islamic terrorism.
Coming soon to a country nearest you.
Unless people give up the delusion.
That all "religions" are the same.
Close proximity, I remember that. Never got arrested for it, but got caught a few times. Of course back in those days, we had no religious police, but if you were out on some dark road, practicing close proximity, you would get checked out.
It's really not a good idea to try and outrun the cops, as this couple found out. Now they will probably have charges piled on them and rougher sentences...

....of course, if they were just stabbing each other, screaming ALllllaaaaahhhh Akkkbaaarrrrr, all would have been ok.....

Better to run from the cops than to be stoned to death I suppose.
More incidents like this will continue to occur if Sharia Law is adopted everywhere else in the world. I hope the rest of the world stops this from happening while there is still time to do so.
"A police patrol car spotted the couple locked in an intimate embrace"
I don't know how "intimate" the embrace was but it is not recommended to drive while being sexually "intimate"!
CTYankee: Their car was parked, not in motion.
'practicing close proximity'
Funny.
Gee, I can't wait for the next episode of "Islam's Wildest Police Videos."
Islamic sharia kills love.

...should be a "riot"...
Ah, what sweet memories this episode stirs. I can recall being at a dance in the social hall at Our Lady of the Snows in Queens. The dance was patrolled by two nuns. Periodically you hear one of the good Sisters say loudly: "Johnny, Betty, break it up now!"
That meant they were in close proximity.
If they kept it up, one of them would be thrown out. The Catholic Talibanettes were smart cookies back in 1965: they knew if you threw them both out, they might get in even closer proximity in the parking lot!"
If they knew you personally, they might call your parents. Then Dad would get in very close proximity to little Johnny's rear end.
Of course, while we were engaged in such relative innocence, people were being stoned half-way around the world. REALLY stoned.
By the way: sincere and deep apologies for associating those great, marvellous, devoted nuns with the Taleban. EEEECH!

Yes, but were they?
Sansantiago - while we're on 'cultural contrasts' you might be amused by a story I read some time this year (not sure if it was in Jerusalem Post, of all places, or on some Israeli blog, sorry I can't give the precise reference). If it's an urban myth, it still tells us a lot about the difference between Israel and the Ummah.
Seems there was a massive traffic jam somewhere in Israel. Turned out it was caused by a young Jewish couple who - ahem! - while driving together had been overcome by passion (presumably while waiting at the lights, or an intersection) and forgot themselves and the world entirely, being far too busy obeying some of the hotter verses in the Song of Solomon.
Of course, a car mysteriously stopped dead in the middle of traffic in Israel sets off all kinds of alarm bells. As I understand it, once the police worked out that the car contained people making love, not war, the couple concerned got off with a hefty fine (for obstructing traffic, whatever) and a caution.
Compare that with the experience of those two poor young lovers in Malaysia. I think we can all see which society is the more human-friendly....
