British universities are coming under the spotlight in the country's fight against terrorism, with critics calling them a hotbed of extremism while lecturers say any clampdown threatens their freedom of speech.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown highlighted universities as one of the key areas where the authorities needed to "act against extremist influences".
However, a row is brewing over how officials can clamp down on radical groups recruiting students for militant causes without infringing on genuine academic debate.

The issue of campus extremism came to the fore in the aftermath of the London suicide bombings by four young British Islamists which left 52 people dead in 2005.
That was followed by a report by Professor Anthony Glees, director of Brunel University's Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies, which suggested campuses were a breeding ground for extremists.
Glees caused a stir across the academic community by estimating that dozens of British universities had been infiltrated by fundamentalists, based on historical terrorism cases which had involved students or former students.
He now says the situation is even worse.
"What we have seen since 2005 has been an increase in the number of students and former students involved in terrorist crimes," he said in an interview.
"And we are even more entitled today to speak about there being a significant number being involved in Islamist terrorism. The evidence is even stronger and more compelling today than it was in 2005."
In the next few weeks, the government will meet with university chiefs to discuss "how we maintain academic freedom whilst ensuring that extremists can never stifle debate or impose their views."
"We are not asking and have never asked universities to spy on or monitor extremism," Rammell said.
"The guidance we issued to vice chancellors last year and are in the process of updating gives advice on how to ensure ... tolerance and open debate, protect vulnerable students, protect staff and students and tackle violent extremism where it may appear."
Glees is adamant that the softy-softly approach will not work. He said students should learn about radical ideas but the real issue is who teaches them and where.
"The people who are going around on campuses aren't learned professors and bright young dons - they are the same sort of people who go round radicalising people in prisons, madrassas and mosques," he said.
The simple reason for this state of affairs is that country is run by a government of cowards, who love nothing more than seeing Britain bashed. As long as you are not British then you can pretty much do as you like and the "powers that be" will back you all the way. That's multiculturalism for you, a system that gives preferentail treatment to minority groups and caused untold harm to the majority.

Well, I wouldn't worry too much about that. When New York, site of 9/11, lights up the Empire State Building in green for Eid your idea might actually be an improvement. It is not weakness, or cowardice, that prompts the foolishness of misplaced tolerance on UK universities. If you think it is that, go and try advocating for restrictions to immigration, or try arguing that men should have spaces to themselves as women do. I was at University in the UK in the 1980s - that was the time of the Anti-Fascist League, of which I was a supporter. The "extreme right" (as they were labeled) of the Federation of Conservative Students was shut down. So, action can be taken, and has been in the past. No, this tolerance of islamofascist propagandists in UK Universities is not about cowardice - it is a deep, ideological error, wrapped in ignorance of islam. One of the great things about the internet is that we can get information from people who are at "the sharp end" all over the world. I am dismayed to see how far Britain, which has given the US (and the whole world) so much (Magna Carta, the Glorious Revolution and the Englishman's Bill of Rights, Adam Smith, Locke, Blackstone, Shakespeare, Milton, Newton, Faraday, etc.,etc.) has deteriorated.

you're certainly right about our leaders, they are traitors.
However, we should not lose hope as we ARE the majority. My country is waking up at last to the threat from within. Although the extremists have done their best through the media to make everyone feel like there is no hope, and we, the 58 million, might as well give in to the 1.5 million muslims and their medieval religion, the tide is turning.
We in the west have done our best to accomodate others' in our enlightened and modern countries and have had it thrown in our faces. People would have us believe that if we don't do this, or bow to that, then we are doomed and will get what's coming to us. But that works both ways.
Islamists believe they are superior warriors because they are prepared to die for the sake of murdering those they hate. We are prepared to die for those we love, and that is a far more powerful incentive.
Don't give up the British just yet. If there's one thing we are good at, it's fighting. Especially on our home ground.

In His last 7 years of his life he sadly fell to the weak human vices of power and became the same as a Ghenghis Khan, or an Attila the Hun. It is the Seven years that changed the world from what millions had known before.
His teachings in Mecca were even compromised by Mohammed himself as he chose to make compromises with the Arab pagan religion that prayed to over 200 rocks in the Kaaba. So even under Mohammed he was changing, and compromising what the Angel Gabriel had apparently told him was the word of Allah and could not be changed for all time. It of course is quite clear that he drew from the new and the old testaments of the Bible for his religion.
I can relate--I'm in SOAS (not one of Hugh's favorite places) at the moment, and there are some shady characters around. The SOAS Israeli Society (I think that's what it's called) has been more active recently in trying to stem the tide. Hopefully it'll work.

Given who her husband is, this doesn't surprise me one bit.
Many people in Britain are too distracted by all the toys and amusements that Western society provides and remain oblivious to the Islamic threat. The rest of us are angry about it but we have also been fairly well-trained to sit quietly and wait for our institutions to do something about it. Every civil society has its institutions which are there to educate, protect and govern. The trouble is that most of ours have already been infiltrated to some degree, if not directly by supporters or Islam, then by those who willingly accomodate and appease them.
Whenever the law or the government does appear to counter Islam it usually amounts to little more than attempting to put a sticking plaster on an advanced cancer. It does nothing to deter the progress of islamification and probably only serves to try and convince the majority that something is being done. None of those who currently wield power and influence are ever going too change because they are too persuaded by their own dogmas and self-interest. Perhaps nothing can change until there is a genuine threat of mass civil unrest. Or at least strident demands by enough people who refuse to be cowed by accusations of racism and fascism. We still have a long way to go to convince people that they going to have to take some personal responsibilty in resisting Islam.

In the analysis and discussion of Islam we often hear assertions like the one made by professor Glees above that "students should learn about extremism". I have also often encountered a similar thread that "in the marketplace of ideas all theories and philosophies must rise and fall on their merits".
These two variants fail to grasp something fundamental about the corruption of today's academy: it can no longer be trusted as a citadel of free thought and honest inquiry into ideas. Our schools of higher learning have become radical fortresses, safe pulpits where extremists are the norm, and remain unfettered to spread their poisons and indoctrinate without any impedance.
Perhaps this theoretical farce once worked when our society imagined it was the proper role of the young to dabble with "extremism" in the exuberance of their youth -- understanding that such dabbling yields later to more mature outlooks. Perhaps this was assumed to be the proper state of affairs, but things have now run amok.
To magnify my point, if "students should learn about extremism", is it fitting in any sane outlook that they should do so under the tutelage of extremists themselves? Do we permit, for illustration, that system wide our universities employ practicing Nazis to 'teach' about the "extremism" of Hitler's Third Reich? Of course not -- it's an absurd notion on its face. And yet in the cases of Marxist communism and supremacist Islam we see armies of apologists and full blown practitioners of those respective "extremist" ideologies fully embedded into the very fabric of the university setting. They are free to indoctrinate, more -- they are PROTECTED aggressively so they can continue to indoctrinate -- they have achieved full membership in the academy with all the privileges and protections and esteem such a thing was designed to offer.
Never mind that both of these radical ideologies exhibit complete contempt for these very rights and privileges when they ascend to power -- never mind the fact that they are the first to violate these precepts in order to protect their sinecure, never mind the fact that these false academics have parasitized these rights and privileges in order to promulgate theories and beliefs which destroy those same rights and privileges. They freely spread their cancerous sedition from high perches in our most esteemed institutions of higher learning across the entire West.
These two vile ideologies, Islam and communism, have been responsible for more bloodshed and more cultural destruction than Nazism ever was, yet both remain protected and unassailed in our universities. Both forms of extremism provide ready-made excuses for their failures in practice ( das kapital in the case of communism, and the reviled "infidel" and Jew within Islam) guaranteeing they will forever remain intractable theories of failure. Both seek world domination -- and actively set about the subversion and eventual destruction of any system they find themselves in which is at odds with their goals of domination.
And yet 'professors' of these damaging and grotesque forms of "extremism" are free to spread the poisons, and have obtained a near stranglehold on the institutions of higher learning within the West. It's absurd. It's obscene.
