Saudi defends 200 lashes for gang-rape victim

How could they not defend it? They're just applying Islamic law. "Saudi defends verdict against gang-rape victim," from Reuters (thanks to John):

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia defended on Tuesday a court's decision to sentence a woman who was gang-raped to 200 lashes of the whip, after the United States described the verdict as "astonishing".

The 19-year-old Shi'ite woman from the town of Qatif in the Eastern Province and an unrelated male companion were abducted and raped by seven men in 2006.

Ruling according to Saudi Arabia's strict reading of Islamic law, a court had originally sentenced the woman to 90 lashes and the rapists to jail terms of between 10 months and five years. It blamed the woman for being alone with an unrelated man.

Last week the Supreme Judicial Council increased the sentence to 200 lashes and six months in prison and ordered the rapists to serve between two and nine years in jail.

The ruling provoked rare criticism from the United States, which is trying to persuade Saudi Arabia to attend a Middle East peace conference in Annapolis, Maryland next week.

A State Department spokesman told reporters on Monday that "most (people) would find this relatively astonishing that something like this happens".

Nothing astonishing about it at all. It's just Islamic law, but why would the State Department know or care about that?

American leaders waking up to their bed fellows finally?

Well, they are only decades late.

Isn't it strange that often these people say "In the name of Allah the benevolent and the merciful" yet this same god demands a punishment like this? Then they wonder why we think such a god is more demonic than anything else.

did you hear the response from nancy pelosi? god it was amazing, pelosi really ripped into the saudis and islamic law, stating that the American women are against female repression in saudi arabia and it must end. and shes sending a delegation to sauid arabia and demanding that women are set free there or aid will end.

and then hillary clinton totally went crazy shouting that this is an outrage to women all over the world. great CNN coverage of this with hillary taking on a saudi delegation, storming their conference with hundreds of women wearing burkahs, disrobing and setting fire to them in front of scared saudi business men.

my favourite was rosie odonnell burning the burkah, the video is on youtube, its amazing, she douses a burkah in petrol and screams "WOMEN OF THE WORLD UNITE AND BURN YOUR BURKAH, END ISLAMIC MALE DOMINANCE!! FREE MUSLIM WOMEN!!"

i love our powerful, strong women in the west who are outraged and united in their hatred for the saudi repressive anti women islamic regime.

Rosie O'Donnell doesn't remember saying that fundamentalist Christians are more dangerous that islamic fundamentalists? Trying to think of the last time I heard of a fundamentalist Christian giving lashings to a female because she was a rape victim . . . . nah, sorry I've got nothing.

Just about every time Muslim unacceptable behavior is exposed and rationalized, I think to myself, this is just more proof that our leaders and corporate ceos are actually Saudi pawns. These spineless bastards are living proof that Saudi money can buy ANYTHING. Our state department, educational system, legislature, judiciary, and executive branch has been purchased by Saudi money. WAKE UP AMERICA!

Sorry about repeat postings-please delete.

Tairq Ramadan would propose a Moratorium for the Muslims to discuss the matter, as he did on stoning.

See the Discussion with Sarkozy (in french) here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjqs57uEsGs

Again, 200 lashes immediately for everyone at Guantanamo..and 200 lashes for the slightest muslim male infraction here in the West..even 200 lashes for a false criminal report against a muslim male would work for me...televised, until they all leave.

Bullies only understand pain and horror. Lets give them some more.

Did I say 200...? I meant 200 warm-up lashes, then the real 200, then 200 warm-down lashes, so the bull-whipper doesn't pull a muscle.

From this version of the story:

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack avoided directly criticizing the Saudi judiciary over the case, but said the verdict "causes a fair degree of surprise and astonishment."

It does? After 230+ years of existence, and with the most sophisticated intelligence-gathering network in the world, the U.S. government is unaware of the treatment of rape victims under sharia law? They are surprised and astonished at something that has been going on for 1350+ years?

This is either stupidity or mendacity. Neither is acceptable.

"This is either stupidity or mendacity. Neither is acceptable."

I dont know which is worse.

Special_guest; sure it's acceptable...it's GOVERNMENT were talking about here! Mendacity is what they do.

The entire world will remember the Qatif Girl case as the high water mark of Saudi Arabia's barbaric and draconian system of "justice." In civilized societies, victims of gang rape receive sympathy and compassion. In KSA they receive double punishment -- 200 lashes -- for just sitting in a car with a man (for whom, by the way, she feels no affection) ?????

Let's count the number of ways this poor young woman has been victimized: 1) Her ex-boyfriends was apparently trying to blackmail her with a photo; 2) To punish her for leaving him, the ex-boyfriend apparently allowed (or arranged for) seven men to rape her multiple times; 3) To add insult to injury, she was arrested for being alone with another man; 4) To punish her and her lawyer for a rigorous defense (something lawyers are supposed to do for their clients), her penalty was doubled and her lawyer stripped of his license is revoked. Even ONE of these injustices would be an outrage.

While KSA's judges argue about whether the crime was "khalwa" or "hiraba," the standard for the rest of the word is "humanitarian." This case is proof positive that there is little that is humanitarian about Sharia Law. It's about time people in KSA and around the world begin thinking and writing about that.

The Toronto Star today has an editorial entitled "Brutal Saudi sentence." I'm glad to see the main stream media paying attention to the real injustices of this world instead of the sob stories we usually get about hijab-wearing girls being refused a place on sports teams, or security guards suspended from jobs because they refused to wear the two "un-Islamic" choices of uniform, etc.

The Star reports that "Ottawa has rightly denounced this ruling as 'barbaric'" but other than Internet sites such as Dhimmiwatch I've not seen or heard a word about this case. But I'll email my MP today and urge him to keep pressure on the Saudis.

I twice emailed the Saudi embassy in Washington (couldn't find any email contact for the Ottawa embassy) but not surprisingly they didn't reply to me. It's important that the Saudis know that this time the eyes of the world are upon them. I urge you to email any and every Saudi Embassy you can find on the Internet, and also your government representative.

Your email could say something along the line of what the Toronto Star says today:

"This ruling ... reeks of reprisal, not justice.
Ottawa should urge King Abdullah, who claims to be reforming the legal system, where judicial whim trumps natural justice, to void the ruling and drop all charges against the victim."

By the way, the Star refers to the victim as "the Qatif girl."

There are so many horrors wrapped up in this story that one tends to be immobilized by the enormity of the injustices. For the sake of this girl,I urge you to do what you can to help publicize this case in the hope that she can be spared.

"Ruling according to Saudi Arabia's strict reading of Islamic law."

For "strict" read, twisted, woman hating, child molesting and retarded.

Check it out:

"As for the woman's lawyer ... the court is taking disciplinary procedures against him for having talked about the case to the media. The Ministry of Justice says that the lawyer had "spoken insolently about the judicial system and challenged laws and regulations." So now if you challenge the legal system in Saudi Arabia, you are taken off your case and who knows what the else they will do to this man.

Lashes for the lawyer! (Hey, that has a rather nice ring to it!)

Right now let's pause for a moment to contemplate the wonderful, serene, peaceful, loving, compassionate, user-friendly (if you're a man) religion of Islam"

...and I still say Ban Muslim Immigration.....

" relatively astonishing" is about as limp as it gets. I'd say the state department stinks. Looks like the whole US administration, left and right, has no moral compass.

FBI & CIA is also a mess. What the hell is happening to America?

She has bought shame to the Kingdom and the to the judiciary by exposing their system [Islam, sharia], therefore she has to be punished.
Deterring others at the same time to speak out.

The western media is just making token noises, but in reality, they are not that interested.
In about a day it will be buried, forgotten.
I am surprised they mentioned it at all.
Probably it could not be hushed up, like most other things that go unreported.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack avoided directly criticizing the Saudi judiciary over the case, but said the verdict "causes a fair degree of surprise and astonishment."

It should cause a huge degree of disgust and abhorrence, to be followed by sanctions against repressive islamic regimes by all western nations, a ban on muslim immigration, and a deportation program for those already here!

Saudi Arabia - "Primitive and Proud"

Hi. New here.

I actually came across this site while looking for resources regarding women who were victims of violence. Even though it wasn't what I was looking for, I kept reading, and I cant help but say that some of the things I've read here has turned my stomach more times that I can count.

I can't imagine the hopelessness and despair that that woman, and undoubtedly countless others have experienced. Even after her sentence is over, her life is probably finished since her family will probably kill her as a matter of "honor".

Welcome ixysi!

My husband introduced me to Jihad Watch/Dhimmi Watch about two years ago, and the information posted here is still a stomach turner & eye opener for me too. Most of what you will read on this website you won't hear about on CBS/NBC/ABC or other news stations; so stick around, because there's no better place to get informed about current issues surrounding Islam/Muhammad, the Qur'an -- and sadly -- violence towards women.

Can't we get that woman out of Saudi Arabia into the west where she can be free?

What can we do to help?

Chris, where did you hear that the ex boyfriend instigated the gang rape for revenge? I don't see how that can be true, because the 7 men raped HIM TOO. The news just doesn't cover that angle much at all.

Also, this is not Sha'aria law, to my understanding. Sha'aria law makes it virtually impossible to achieve a conviction of rape in the first place, but, once the judges agree that a rape took place (which they did, in this case) then Sha'aria law demands that the rapist be stoned to death.

This is clearly a case of something even worse than Sha'aria law prevailing, which I know is very difficult to imagine!

Interesting discussion of this case here at the muslim village.

I've yet to read the whole discussion, but it is interesting to see what muslims outside of Saudi Arabia think.

(apologies in advance if the tags don't work)

ixysi,

You'll find here that Islam is not violent just to women, but to everyone who doesn't toe the line.

Women; just because they're women.
All non-Musilims (though some more than others).
Muslims deemed not Islamic enough.

Essentially, it's violent to everyone except Muslim fundamentalists.

Here's the first thing you need to know about Islam. It doesn't mean peace. It means submission.

Here's the second. Islam has NOT been hijacked by a tiny minority of 'extremists'.

The list goes on.

ixysi,

P.S. See also Jihadwatch.org.

Why are we surprised? What does Islam teach about rape? The sister was in a car with boys. This is like asking for it like an infidel, like a piece of raw meat. My favorite teaching of the prophet concerning rape and prostitution is as follows:

But force not your maids to prostitution when they desire chastity, in order that ye may make a gain in the goods of this life. But if anyone compels them, yet, after such compulsion, is God, Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful (to them)." (Mohammed's law as set out in his Wicked Quran, 24:33). Allah will forgive you if after you have forced your chaste slave into prostitution to make yourself money, you thereafter will allow her to be chaste.

"Chaste"?! Chased down and stoned I'll believe...

trying again

Blast. Sorry about that. Try this link. I'll get it working one day.

What aussie muslims think of this.

Even NZ's prime minister, Helen Clark, who is usually to PC and afraid of offending these large consumers of NZ lamb and dairy exports has offered the following damp squib:
"I hope that justice will prevail and that the young woman, who is the victim in this case, will be shown leniency by the Saudi judiciary..."
read it at
http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PA0711/S00418.htm

This case seems like a classic example of "blame the victim" of rape. How dare this young woman let herself get put into a situation where she could be gang raped by well meaning and pious muslim men who were only trying to show the young woman the error of her ways. We in the west simply do not understand the "superior moral virtue" of sharia law. How uncivlized and unsophisticated of us infidels!
