"Abdullah Al-Morai, a lecturer at the Um Al-Qura University in Makkah, said that chaining one’s children in such a demeaning way is against the teachings of Islam. He described it as an act of 'ignorance.'”
All right, Al-Morai, but in a world where some Muslim parents consider honor killings fully justified, and the Jordanian Parliament rejects on Islamic grounds a law stiffening penalties for honor killings, chains seem positively...moderate.
"Parents Chain Young Woman at Makkah Home," by Badea Abu Al-Naja for Arab News (thanks to all who sent this in):
JEDDAH, 5 December 2007 — Authorities in Makkah are investigating the case of a 19-year-old girl who left her home yesterday and climbed into a taxi with her feet in chains. The driver of the taxi reported the girl to police after noticing the chains.
On questioning, the girl told the police that she was heading to meet her boyfriend, who had proposed to marry her but had been refused by her family....
Makkah Police spokesman Maj. Abdul Muhsin Al-Mayman said that the Community Protection Office has been notified. “Parents should be more cautious about the safety of their children’s mental and physical health,” he added.

Im surprised they treated this girl as nice as they did.

Where's Naseem? Another case of "poor parenting skills" here? Or a pervasive struggle for the ultimate state of control?
Boy, Islam really does mean "submission."
The cabbie must have been an infidel- I can't see an Islamaniac giving this a second thought with this happening in the ummah.
Of course if the cabbie was indeed an infidel he'd have to be killed, Mecca being an infidel-free "holy" city.
It is however acceptable for muslim males to bar all the windows and lock all the doors before they go out, imprisoning the women. The Religious Policeman mentions this in his (now, sadly, defunct) site.
I thought women are not allowed to go anywhere in Sowdi Arabia without a minder?

It's OK-the "dog was curbed" in a sense by those chains. Must be a special deal in that holiest of the holy cities.
"chaining one’s children in such a demeaning way is against the teachings of Islam."
So there must be a non-demeaning way?
" . . .chains seem positively...moderate."
Hooray, we found that moderate Muslim. Is this a trend? The cab driver is obviously an unrepentant Islamophobe.
Call it in the air - heads it's chains; tails it's death.
I anxiously await learning how al-Murai, the Mekkan scholar, proposes a less demeaning way to chain ones children. Perhaps it's just the translation, but he doesn't appear to condemn chaining itself, just the "demeaning" way it's done by these parents. Is it demeaning to him primarily because she got away and was seen? Given the humiliation basis for Islam, I suspect being seen in chains is infinitely more "demeaning" to a Muslim scholar than being chained is of itself. What a hideous society.
Also, take note of the way the report provides some cover for the parental act of chaining: The daughter is depicted running to her boyfriend/lover. We now know that this is sufficient, even in small unassuming seeming Islamic communities in the West, to be sufficient grounds to murder one's daughter. Perhaps her parents are actually the moderate Muslims we've been seeking for so long?

...oh Islam ....feel the love....
MORE ISLAMIC VALUES THAT D'SOUZA LIKES.
The story says "The daughter is depicted running to her boyfriend/lover"
now are those the words from her or from her parents or moral police? her words in muslim lands means nothing so it's obviously the parent's. they are putting all the blame on her for this. typical of islamic family values of blaming the victims/girls.
I don't think the taxi driver did her any favors,Islamsforlosers. As I read it, she didn't make it to her boyfriend's house, and, instead, had a talk with the police. I would like to know with whom she is currently residing.
So, when is the girl to be tried for being in public without a male family member?
The only good thing about islam is the ease at which it lends itself to sarcasm. Unfortunately the events that lead to such sarcasm exist. I hope some commentator from here will be able to post a question to the candidates about what they plan to do about islam and what they believe islam is cuz I ain't seeing anyone speak about it.
Islamic family values - the family is one big chain gang.
I suspect that the chains were to readily insure that the girl would be ready to be raped/killed with a minimum of trouble when the time was right. It is so much harder to rape or kill a woman when she can run away. Islamic serial killers/rapists hard at work demonstrating to us infidels how peaceful they are!
