The U.N. Insignia Emerges as a Global Target for Al-Qaeda Attacks

Al-Qaeda fails to recognize one of its greatest allies. By Colum Lynch for the Washington Post (thanks to all who sent this in):

UNITED NATIONS -- The suicide bombings that ripped apart the U.N. headquarters building in Algiers on Dec. 11 and killed at least 37 people, including 17 U.N. employees, provided a bloody demonstration of the United Nations' emergence as a key target in al-Qaeda's global war against the West.

This year, al-Qaeda and its affiliates have threatened or targeted U.N. officials and peacekeepers in conflict zones in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan and southern Lebanon, where six U.N. peacekeepers were killed in a bombing in June. Even before the Algiers attack, the United Nations was already investing millions of dollars in fortifying its facilities and convoys in response to threats in Afghanistan and Iraq.

But the Algiers attack -- the deadliest for the United Nations since insurgents bombed its Baghdad headquarters in August 2003 -- provided a blunt reminder of how vulnerable the international organization is, even in relatively peaceful locales. It also raised concerns that more than a decade of efforts by the U.N. Security Council to check the influence of al-Qaeda and other radical Islamic movements has exposed U.N. humanitarian agencies to new dangers.

"Al-Qaeda certainly regards the United Nations as inimical to its own interests," said Richard Barrett, head of a U.N. team that monitors the effectiveness of U.N. sanctions against al-Qaeda and the Taliban. "The more the United States and other countries protect themselves, the more the battle goes to the softest target, and the U.N. is always going to be a softer target."

While the United Nations is often accused in Washington of being anti-American and anti-Israeli, its image in the Middle East -- where it serves as the chief caregiver for Palestinian refugees -- has also been tattered. U.N. sanctions against Islamic countries, including Iraq and Iran, and the agency's refusal to engage in talks with elected Hamas officials have played into the hands of those who say the global body is an agent of U.S. and Israeli interests.

"Al-Qaeda fails to recognize one of its greatest allies."

Well, if you learn anything from Mark Stynes "America Alone," it's that Islamists do not consider anyone allied to them, but other Islamists. If you tell them you are on their side, but you are an "infidel," then there's still a target plastered on your chest (or head, or back, etc...).

Talk about biting the hand that feeds.

If al Qaeda is what it takes to end the UN, I'm all for it.

Note to the humor impaired: this ain't an endorsement of al Qaeda, Islam or terrorism (I know I'm being redundant here)

More than 98 Pct.of the countries of the world are members of the United nations.

Another words if you attack and kill members of the United nations, then you will be leaving no body of reconciliation, and support on your behalf.

So if you are Al Qaeda and you are murdering people who work for the UN, are you getting direct support from a Country that is a member of United Nations?

If any country is found to be complicit in the direct support of Al Qaeda and is also a member of The United nations, then what actions are being taken towards that country by the United Nations Security Counsel?

Interesting. UN is the prime symbol of international law, and thus a direct competitor to totalitarian Islam. What we're watching is just competition at work.

Now, if we can get our act together and rally behind the original UN principles (not the way they're being managed - that's different) and counter Al-Qaeda through this, it wouldn't be bad.

"...the United Nations was already investing millions of dollars in fortifying its facilities and convoys in response to threats in Afghanistan and Iraq..."

...how about using some of that UN firepower to actually attack something....I have an IQ of 4 and I can figure that one out....gee...

....Islam has drawn a line in the sand...

This highlights the Achilles' heel of the 'fast Jihadists' - their loopiness and fanaticism. Attacking the U.N. or planning a terror attack in Brussels could only hurt the wildly successful 'slow Jihad' and Eurabia project.

So far Al Qaeda has given the West just the right amount of terror in the 'Jihad recipe'. Enough to cow us into nervous chattering appeasement. But terror is like what the French call a 'sauce violent' - it's a ketsup or a soy that overpowers every other flavor in the recipe -in Islamic public relations just a bit more violence and we will 'taste' nothing else in Islam. Dismembered bodies in our streets tends to make on forget about Mevlevi dances or Persian miniatures.

The UN hierarchy must be keep in a permanent mental state of insecurity and terror, so they will submissively produce a continuous stream of jizya payments (drained from the Infidel West and, primarily, from the United States) to the Muslim world. Moreover, the international bureaucrats at the UN must be kept ever mindful of their dhimmi obligations never to protest or balk at these payments and never to dare criticize, or otherwise anger, their Islamic masters.

It looks to me that violent attacks on UN facilities and people are consistent with Islamic supremacist dogma. Terror pays. Spectacular terror, the more gruesome the better, pays handsomely.

Frankly, I'm with the islamists on this one, the U.N. is the enemy. With the small exception that they don't give anything to the U.S., they just take and take and take.

Maybe if the U.N. quit giving money to the muslims, the muslims would either starve or kill each other fighting over the few scraps they produce themselves.

Oh wait, this is the U.N. we're talking about. . . never mind.

... We could send Al Quaeda a comprehensive list of UN facilities, their addresses, and associated high-resolution satellite imagery ... but, as Nixon said in another context, "That would be wrong" ...

On the other hand, I was never a big Nixon fan (Wasn't he impeached, or something?)... just why, exactly, would my idea be wrong? The UN really isn't on our side, is it?

The Useless Nations need to end its activities in these Muslim Country's. They are just enablers.

...we have many AL-QAEDA Addresses and we refuse to attack....might offend some host country'S pride or something.....

I think it highly improbable that the UN will learn from this recent attack against it in Algeria. The UN being the UN will react in Susan Sarandon mode: "Oh, why do they hate us so?" It will then proceed to redouble its efforts to try and figure out how to make Al Qaeda and its ilk understand that the UN wants to have dialogue with those in the Muslim world who feel alienated from so much of the rest of mankind, especially the imperial, avaricious, insensitive West. Count on it.

What was it Churchill said about appeasers and appeasing? Something to the effect that it only made you the last meal eaten by the enemy?

"The more the United States and other countries protect themselves, the more the battle goes to the softest target, and the U.N. is always going to be a softer target."

Oh, those brave jihadists. Hitting the UN only because they can, in the same spirit with which they attack their own women and children.

Islamic fighters? Talk about a sense of humor!

Would the UN be less of a target if the US withdrew from that august organization? In addition to getting the US out of the UN, we should get the UN out of the US.

@DavePA:

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last." ... Sir Winston Churchill

I have been reading a book over Christmas written by a Hampden medium bomber pilot who was shot down on a mine laying mission against the Germans. His plane hit the ground hard, but in a landing position. He was lucky to survive intact, but his crew were less fortunate. Two died instantly, in his words “There was enough left of them to see they where dead.” The third was carried away on a stretcher bloodied and unrecognizable while muttering incoherently. He is brave enough to admit his cowardice and terror after such an event, and he did help his navigator away from the plane wreckage and the huge mine they were carrying.

His book is an account of his time at the mercy of the Luftwaffe (RAF prisoners fell under their jurisdiction). In it he describes them as being very much like us. Even to the point of being asked about why the English bombed the little houses (as opposed to the factories I presume). And the Germans and English are brothers while their allies on both sides where not. I hear time and again that the Germans didn’t want to fight us and his memoirs support this.

Of course things changed as the bombing of Germany intensified and more allied pilots fell into German hands.

What I took away from this book is the overwhelming feeling that as individuals we were actually close to our enemy in many ways, but we still had to make them stop. Nothing but their total defeat would do. They set the benchmark for their defeat at the Rhine; all we had to do was cross it.

It’s different with this enemy. Ken Bigley’s family knows there is no compassion or understanding in Al Qaeda. In truth they are feral beasts bent on destruction, and they are happy to die for small gains.

And they will always die for small gains because we outclass them in every aspect of warfare, civilization and higher thinking. We fought a carbon copy of ourselves and won.

The Jawas are doomed, but where is their line of defeat?

...the officials at the Target stores are relieved...

God's messengers in the British Army are asking for the right to carry side arms because the Taleban like to shoot Crusading vicars etc. Not that a side arm is any use in combat, maybe they would rather drop themselves first.

The target stores are doing great business.

The truth is that an Avro Lancaster with added targeting toys could drop a 10,000lb bomb on the Taleban from a height of 15,000ft today without receiving anything back in return. Technologically we are light years ahead of them.

Certain spectators and Americans complain that the Typhoon is a relic of the Cold War and unsuitable for the war . But a Lancaster bomber could still drop ten 1000lb JDAM bombs

And if anybody says you can’t fit the associated tools to a sixty year old airframe your taking the Health and Safety route to self buggerment.

Not that it matters to Terry when his dusty hole is destroyed by a bomb. He should think himself lucky. We sent miners under the enemy and rattled windows in London once over. Terry is getting the BEF, not Kitcheners Army. Imagine two million Brits kicking off. We’d chase the Taleban into the long grass and then turn on Pakistan for tea with India fetching the scones.

Yeah Muslims want Sharia Law not U.N. law or Democracy. Extrapolation ... Islam and therefore Muslims mean to undermine our societies for their own purposes, yet they are still here, and we still allow them entry. Why?

Blast from the past. Invade Deerborne.

Feck em, nobody gets out of their bed and jumps around for the UN. A (GLOBAL BUNCH) of bad things and me and my Doberman will continue to ignore them.

Viva the day I have to drag my hound over to Kofi's house.

Islam is a declaration of war against all non-Muslims ... Americans, the U.N., white, black, Hindu, Atheist, Serb we are all allies.

1. "Surely the worst of beasts in God's sight are the unbelievers." (The Spoils: VIII: 55)

2. " Certainly, God is an enemy to the unbelievers . " (The Cow: II: 90)

3. "Oh ye who believe! fight those of the unbelievers and let them find in you harshness." (Repentance: IX: 123)

4. "Humiliate the non-Muslims to such an extent that they surrender and pay tribute." ( Repentance IX: 29 )

We are winning. And we will continue to win when the Tories gain power. On the other hand you lot are going to vote left next time in contrary to Britain.

You need us more than we need you.

The Tories had to go to George Bush cap in hand cos George and Tony like to play together. Tony is on a mission to rule Europe. You honestly think that the Tories are going to let that evil little swine run the all of Europe? If George Bush backs him I will attack you as a member of the Axis of Evil.

The Other Mert -

you ask - where is Islam's 'line of defeat'? (by analogy with the Rhine being Nazi Germany's 'line of defeat', or perhaps, the Rhine and then the capital, Berlin).

I would hazard, there are two.

The outer line - the 'Rhine', so to speak - is set, I think, today, at Eretz Israel, and the Temple Mount. The Arab Muslims want the Holy Land, and in particular, Jerusalem, as a trophy, like a hunter whacks off the head of a tiger and tacks it to the wall; so's they can sneer at Jews and Christians whose holy books, holy persons and Holy One they have usurped by a combination of foefic and identity fraud. To steadfastly deny them that trophy, which they once held, is to weaken them.

Quite possibly Hagia Sophia, and Constantinople, also lie on that outer line, the 'Rhine' of Islam.

The inner line, the 'Berlin', so to speak, is Mecca and Medina.

Christianity could survive, if St Peter's were flattened. After all, we spent the first four centuries in the catacombs, and have survived the loss of Hagia Sophia. Judaism survived the Hebrews' slavery in Egypt, the Jews' exile in Babylon and Persia, and the destruction - not once, but twice - of their holiest place; it survived both Dhimmitude and the Shoah.

But a religio-political ideology like Islam, based on shame/ honor, on geopolitical dominance and the singleminded pursuit of power, on boasts and threats and a wholly counter-factual belief in its own perfection, lacking any theology of humility, would be dealt a deadly blow by 1. the implacable removal, from its control, of its most vaunted/ coveted conquest/s and 2. the destruction of its inmost physical centres of power.

"But a Lancaster bomber could still drop ten 1000lb JDAM bombs"

...The US still employs the B-52....a plane that is around 60 years old....it is a remarkable plane....it has a 70,000 pound payload and is nuclear capable......it can refuel in midair and can reach any spot on the globe....

....one place you do not want to be is in the target area of a Lancaster or a B-52.....

....if only the Gods of War would unleash them....The Muslims keep pushing all the right buttons....

....looks like things are going to get real ugly before they get better.....that is the way it has always been.....

....until things get better...arm yourselves and practice often....
