MADRID - Spanish police have smashed a suspected Islamist terror cell, arresting 14 people and recovering bomb-making equipment in overnight raids in Barcelona, the interior minister said on Saturday.
‘During our searches, we found various materials which could be explosives or be used to make explosives,’ Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba told a press conference in Madrid.
Those arrested included 12 Pakistanis and two Indians, he said. Four timing devices as well as computer equipment which was still being examined were also recovered.
He said that the group could be characterised as ‘radical Islamist’, was ‘highly organised’ and was preparing to carry out an attack in the north-eastern Spanish city.
The operation, which saw five homes raided by police, was carried out on the basis of information gathered by Spain’s domestic and foreign intelligence agencies.
The intelligence suggested ‘the possibility that a terrorist action was being prepared on Spanish soil, in Barcelona to be precise,’ Rubalcaba said.
Police then ‘detected an organised group suspected of gathering materials used to make explosives,’ and decided immediately to swoop, he said.
He added that it was ‘probable’ that some of the 14 were innocent.
Private radio station Cadena Ser reported that the suspects were believed to have links to a financial network for certain branches of Al Qaeda.
All the arrests took place in the Raval neighborhood of Barcelona, home to a large Muslim immigrant population, media reports said.

Newspaper El Pais reported on its website that Spanish authorities have warned France, Portugal and Britain of the possibility of attacks on Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf during a visit to Europe next week.
Small groups composed principally of Pakistanis were preparing to carry out attacks ‘imminently,’ the report cited Spanish intelligence agency sources as saying.
Musharraf begins a European tour on Sunday that will see him visit Brussels, France, Britain and the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, speaking in Portugal, praised the intelligence services for the raids but said not to jump to conclusions about those arrested.

I live 10 minutes from an education institution which has a room where MSA jihadis preach Muslim defense against what they claim is a "war on islam." There is no civilized world equivalent of MSA subversives in the Muslim pig pens, because their perverse ideology limits exercise of freedom of conscience.
So why do we allow these animals to subvert our schools and plot jihad terror? Because the leader of the Free World believes - conditioned on his expectations of Saudi millions after he leaves office - that "islam is peace." Public opinion polls reveal less that 30% distrust for the mortal muslim enemy. In that context, our own neighborhoods have been turned into salients on the Muslim-Dhimmi war against Western Civilization.

Is it possible for a 'good' muslim to worship Allah in moderation?
Is it possible for a 'good' muslim to follow Allah's directions,(Quran), in moderation.
Is it possible for a 'good' muslim to emulate the Prophet in moderation?
Is it possible for a 'good' muslim to obey Shari'a in moderation?
I don't think we would find too many muslim's willing to admit to these moderations...

When this story broke I was watching the BBC. The special was about some secular cultural Muslim that was considering the calls for Sharia law in Britian to hadle civil cases. She wore jeans and no hijab, and had no clue about islam. She traveled to Nigeria to see how it would work in practice. What a shody dishonest piece of journalism!! She threw nothing but soft balls when asking questions. She was a little ucomfortable with lashings and stonings, but went out of her way to minimize them and make excuses for them. There is almost nothing but praise for how northren Nigeria is transformed. One is left with the impression is not that bad, and only islamaphobes would oppose it.
Can you imagine if someone suggested christian or hindu civil law courts to operate in conjuction secular european ones? No one would stand for it. I can't believe sharia would even be suggested or that the BBC would take it serious enough to have an investigative journalist do puff piece on it. I'm still so shocked I can't make sense of it.
Not Telling...It illustrates that no moderate muslims exist, unless you can find one who will admit to worshiping Allah moderately. But no muslim will admit to that. Allah is watching and knows all. And yes, worshiping Allah moderately could be seen as apostasy by other 'good' muslims...If I was a muslim, I would never admit to that out loud...
Spain knows how to defend itself, And so do we, and so does all other Western nations. They need only stop all Muslim immigration, padlock all Mosques and Islamic schools, deport all Imams and Mullahs, and expel any Muslems that show the slightest reluctance to conform to the laws of their host country.
There is no alternative to these measures, except to continue with the same self- destructive policies they operate under now: continue to allow Muslim immigration to their countries, Allow them to continue to build Mosques and schools, and permit Imams to operate freely undermining the culture and laws of their host countries.
There is no other way, and, the longer we wait, the more difficult it's going to be.
