Al-Libi was thought to have been involved in the February 2007 bombing at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan while Vice President Dick Cheney was visiting.
The knowledgeable Western official said al-Libi was "not far below the importance of the top two al Qaeda leaders" -- Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri....

This number also included several who died in the school fire in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, forced back into the flaming building because they fled the inferno without their abayas — and one whose left hand was amputated in a Kabul market by the Taleban after her burqa slipped down to her forearm as she reached for an orange.
Apparently, these women took him into custody in chains and marched him downstairs to the other place. Allah apparently felt these ladies had a bit of levity coming to them.

It's a complex era with complex problems and, once again, we're served up candidates more concerned with soundbites than reality. Hillary's health care plan looks to spiral out of control five or six seconds after it's signed into law. McCain's stock answer to questions about the economy is to talk about the war. Romney's not to be trusted; he's "seen the light" too many times. Obama is simply a total x-factor on foreign policy; I've yet to hear a coherent stance out of him aside from withdrawal from Iraq.
Kind of like the war: big problems, imperfect solutions. The talking heads tell us to take our toys and go home because no "real" Republicans are running. They tell us we have to remain ideologically pure.
In 2003 Bremer's boys chose ideological purity over utilitarianism and did a bang-up job making Iraq into a suburb of Hell. In 2007 Petraeus held his nose, put old enemies on the payroll and started to get some real progress made.
Funny how that works.

I've noticed that too, both still shots and video show this to be common. I was watching a Frontline repeat the other night, "Return of the Taliban" and I couldn't help but notice how dead-in-the-eye most of the Pakistanis seemed to be. Those of the tribal districts, that is.
The 'young, charismatic' leader in S. Waristan they focused on for a while was named Mehk Mohammed ( if I remember correctly). He was reported to be around 28 years old. They had video of him meeting with the Pakistani army while they negotiated the latest non-binding agreement, which Mehk Mohammed didn't honor for much longer than the meeting itself. Anyway, in all the footage I couldn't help but notice how old the dude looked for being 28 and also how dead in the eyes. He actually looked retarded to me. Like he was deficient in intelligence. It was obvious that he was not 'normal' as we understand the term, but the funny thing is that it's not a physical problem... it's a mental retardation that's belief-based and culture based. Wow.

You've hit the nail on the head. Read the following excerpt from Tawfiq Hamid's article about the formation of a jihadi, and you will understand where the 'dead-eye' comes from:
