Another honor killing in Jordan

...where penalties for this sort of killing remain light -- on Islamic grounds.

"Teenage girl strangled in 'honour killing,'" from Gulfnews (thanks to Sr. Soph):

Jordan: A 17-year-old girl died after being strangled to death by her brother in a Palestinian refugee camp near the Jordanian town of Jerash .

He was apparently angered by her absence from home.

The woman, who had been married for eight months, was accused of shaming her family and killed in a so-called "honour" crime.

This is the second murder of its kind in a month.

A Jordanian prosecutor has charged the victim’s brother, a 20-year-old man, with premeditated murder.

Local newspapers reported that he had stuffed a scarf in his sister's mouth, choked her with an electric cable and smoked a pack of cigarettes before turning himself in.

Maybe he was trying to commit suicide by nicotine overdose because he felt so sorry and guilty for his evil deed.

Yeah right.

"Local newspapers reported that he had stuffed a scarf in his sister's mouth, choked her with an electric cable and smoked a pack of cigarettes before turning himself in."

Smoking a pack before spilling the beans.

That's so classy.

Uber cool.

Positively Humphrey Bogartesque.

Pity his sister wasn't on hand to witness this display of urbane chicness.

Ah well.

"He was apparently angered by her absence from home."

He was apparently angered by her absence from home?

Uh, doesn't the article say she was married? Isn't that a proper reason for the girl to be away from home, forever?

A client of mine who is a marine and did three stints in Iraq told me that when our soldiers go on house to house searches, they usually encounter about twenty or more females and no males. Because the females aren't allowed to speak to men, they will have a five year old male child act as the go between. He will direct the soldiers to different rooms in the house and answer any questions. Can you imagine?

Boys and young men have been indulged under Islam for way too long. Time to help them grow up.

At least the perpetrator is being tried for premeditated murder, though it remains to be seen whether this will stick.

In Jordan, there are still three penal code articles on the books that offer leniency to the perpetrators. These crimes are treated as misdemeanors; the average sentence is six months, though too many perpetrators serve no time at all.

The punishments for being critical of the king or the royal family are greater than this.

"The punishments for being critical of the king or the royal family are greater than this."

Thus the King of Jordan could with the snap of his fingers change the law and stiffen the penalties of honor crimes to the level of the 21st century, if he wanted to. He doesn't want to, probably for Islamic reasons.

...Islam is looking more and more like a religion of premeditated murder...

We shouldn't judge Muslim customs. They're just different, you see...

Yet another young woman slaughtered by a male relative for marrying a man of her own choosing.
Thank you for speaking out for her and too many others like her...so far, reports don't even give her the dignity of a name.
