Bought and paid for: US officials sold sensitive military and nuke secrets to foreign agents

Hot on the heels of the Coughlin scandal comes more evidence of infiltration. "For sale: West’s deadly nuclear secrets," from the Sunday Times (thanks to all who sent this in):

A WHISTLEBLOWER has made a series of extraordinary claims about how corrupt government officials allowed Pakistan and other states to steal nuclear weapons secrets.

Sibel Edmonds, a 37-year-old former Turkish language translator for the FBI, listened into hundreds of sensitive intercepted conversations while based at the agency’s Washington field office.

She approached The Sunday Times last month after reading about an Al-Qaeda terrorist who had revealed his role in training some of the 9/11 hijackers while he was in Turkey.

Edmonds described how foreign intelligence agents had enlisted the support of US officials to acquire a network of moles in sensitive military and nuclear institutions.

Among the hours of covert tape recordings, she says she heard evidence that one well-known senior official in the US State Department was being paid by Turkish agents in Washington who were selling the information on to black market buyers, including Pakistan.

The name of the official – who has held a series of top government posts – is known to The Sunday Times. He strongly denies the claims.

However, Edmonds said: “He was aiding foreign operatives against US interests by passing them highly classified information, not only from the State Department but also from the Pentagon, in exchange for money, position and political objectives.”

She claims that the FBI was also gathering evidence against senior Pentagon officials – including household names – who were aiding foreign agents.

“If you made public all the information that the FBI have on this case, you will see very high-level people going through criminal trials,” she said.

In one conversation Edmonds heard the official arranging to pick up a $15,000 cash bribe. The package was to be dropped off at an agreed location by someone in the Turkish diplomatic community who was working for the network.

The Turks, she says, often acted as a conduit for the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan’s spy agency, because they were less likely to attract suspicion. Venues such as the American Turkish Council in Washington were used to drop off the cash, which was picked up by the official.

Edmonds said: “I heard at least three transactions like this over a period of 2½ years. There are almost certainly more.”

Does anyone have any idea of who that State Department official could be? I find it interesting that they have the goods on this guy, but nothing has been done to date. It is utterly amazing how people in our government now can get away with things that, many years ago, used to get you a date with the hangman.

Remember Mary O. McCarthy last year? The CIA official who was passing classified information to the New York Times. The Justice Department did nothing about it.

It's getting to where you just can't trust a household name. Is there anyone in the US gov that is not a crook on some level? It would be bad enough if muslims were forcing this on us, but they are not. They are taking advantage, but the way is made easy for them.

True, but most of these cases are unelected bureaucrats. They have lifetime careers in civil service and are unaffected by a change in the occupant of the White House. Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton(?), doesn't matter. They keep their jobs no matter who is elected.

We can throw out every member of the House and Senate on the ballot in November and we can elect an independent as President and the bureaucrats will remain in place. It's one of the arguments used by those who oppose term limits: the staff will gain more influence because the rookies will be dependent on them.

I agree on the "legacy" aspect of the bureaucrats we have now in part has nothing to do with the current elected leaders, but if those leaders had more aggression in removing (or moving) such bureaucrats from their current positions...things would improve.

The point I am making is we have too many holes in the dam..leaking every which way. We need to plug some of these holes and we should have been doing this 5-6 years ago after 9-11. This story is just another hole.

The State Department needs to be cleaned out from top to bottom. Every presidential candidate should weigh in on what he proposes to do about this den of inequity that is torpedoing America for their own personal gain. We could not be any worse off with a completely new cast of players.

If they cannot be fired, they can be retired with pensions and the requirement to never work for any foreign country or agent, with annual checkups by an inspector general. They should also be required to take up residency at least 1000 miles from Washington and disallowed to be ever be within 50 miles of Washington DC again. And monitor their phone calls for the rest of their lives. For the most dangerous ones make them wear a GPS boot.

State is no the only den of inequity in Washington. But it is the worst.

I've just been listening to a Heritage podcast by a former counter intelligence officer about Ana Montes and the infiltration by Cuban spies into the US government. He basically said it is complete. Any department they want to penetrate, they're there.

That's one of the reasons China is sidling up to Cuba - to get a feed from their intelligence sources.

Imagine if we had fought WWII in a context in which the government could not discriminate against Nazis or Japanese emperor worshipers, but had to, instead, try to distinguish between "fundamentalist" Nazis and "moderate" Nazis and then invite the moderates into the national intelligence hen-house. Imagine if the Cold War were fought with rules protecting "moderate" Communists seeking national security positions, rather than attempting to screen them all out.

We will continue to have this sort of problem until we change our laws concerning the employment of and granting rights to Muslims, and quit employing the fiction that every Muslim is "moderate" and should be trusted in the most sensitive national security positions until and unless we do something to piss him or her off, such as by actually looking at what they believe and have been indoctrinated to do, which is to defeat us infidels and establish Sharia.

And, we will not get to the point where anyone even dares talk about changing these laws until and unless an eloquent leader emerges, in a position of power (preferably a U.S. President and preferably real soon), who will take up that challenge.

People complain about the paranoid atmosphere of McCarthyism during the Cold War, but the attitudes of the 50's did lead to necessary corrections in our legal codes and the way our government did business. Without excusing the excesses to which Senator McCarthy went in throwing out damaging and baseless accusations at times, I must say that we need to define our enemy and then revive our Cold War paranoia and that Cold War drive to ferret out enemies. Our new enemies continue to emerge from a particular group and attack us based on an ideology posing as a "great religion", but we kid ourselves to try to trust the "moderates" among them when they all have the same playbook in which they are the X's and we are the O's. We currently suffer from the the opposite of paranoia (undeserving trust?) and as a result we are not only totally infiltrated by the enemy but we are just plain blind to the nature of the threats we are facing.

This type of espionage is nothing new. It's been going on since the beginning of civilization. Hell, the Soviets had the West so penetrated it was ridiculous. It's not that difficult. The first part is the hardest, identifying the target. Once you have that you can then make an offer of money, ideology, or blackmail. Having said all that, let's pop the cork on this baby and clean house. What isn't mentioned is whether or not the ring is still operating. The primary suspect is no longer at the State Department, but he would most likely have recruited other(s) to take his place. At least that is how it worked back in the day. Every administration has had it's big spy story. Even Reagan had the Walker ring(but it also spanned several decades). Then there were the McCarthy hearings. That flushed a lot of rats. The issue is not so much that it did happen, but why it happened for so long. Open the files, prosecute, and let the chips fall where they may.

Okay, I'm coming clean. I work for the federal government. One of those bureaucrats - not a manager or anything, relatively low man on the totem pole. One of the problems is that the background check process has become more a test to see if the employee seeking a prospective security clearance is a "team player." They're still asking questions about affiliation with communist organizations or others threatening the US, but that is not elaborated on as any religious, i,e., Muslim group. They're still asking if you're social drinker or not. The background process is still rooted in the 1950s and 1960s. They're not looking to root out Islamic sympathizers or moles.

the problem is the civil service system. How many candidates have promised to "clean up the bureaucracy"? They can't. They don't have the power. People are protected by rules guarding against firing people simply because a new party comes to power. You have to show gross incompetence (or maybe, withhold the money) or malfeasance. Unless you're a political appointee you can't be fired. The entire civil service system would need to be overhauled and it won't happen. Elect the most radical candidate and it won't matter. He's still bound by law.

Jimmy_Bones, you start by appointing John Bolton as the Secretary of State. He is the only one who has both the political savvy and strength of moral conviction, who can be counted on to wade into the cesspool, drain it, and disinfect it. I hope Pres. Romney seriously considers this.

Edmonds was later to see the scope of the Pakistani connections when it was revealed that one of her fellow translators at the FBI was the daughter of a Pakistani embassy official who worked for Ahmad. The translator was given top secret clearance despite protests from FBI investigators.

She is the daughter of an embassy official. Doesn't that mean she is not even a citizen?

HOV- when they do the security clearance and they ask your family and friends and (muslim) neighbors if you are a good person, what kind of answer could they expect when they know what answer must be given to infiltrate.

And as far as hiring contractors... penny wise, pound foolish. How would you like your air traffic controllers to be contractors? And your translators working on the enemies conversations. What are their sympathies? Who knows.

Saudi Arabia, top customer of U.S. weaponry. Well, Turkey only tails the Saudis slightly in that category; between 1992 and 1996, Turkey was the second largest importer of weaponry, spending more than $7 billion in four years. A report by the World Policy Institute shows that Turkey is the third largest recipient of U.S. military aid, behind Israel and Egypt. Between 1994 and 2003, Turkey took delivery of more than $6.8 billion in U.S. weaponry and services.

In fiscal year 1989, U.S. aid to Turkey was $563,500,000. According to a Multi National Monitor Report, in 1991, Turkey received more than $800 million in U.S. aid, “an exceptional return” on its $3.8 million investment in Washington lobbyists. At the time, International Advisors, INC. (Douglas Feith & Richard Perle lobbying firm as registered agents for Turkey) was paid more than $1 million for representing Turkey in the U.S. for the purpose of securing these types of deals. In 2003, Turkey received a $1 billion aid package. During this period their registered and known lobbyists were the Livingston Group, headed by the former Speaker of the House Bob Livingston, and Solarz Associates, headed by a formerly powerful Representative, Stephen Solarz. Turkey, from 2000 to 2004, for only four years, paid Livingston $9 million for his lobbying services. What did the Republic of Turkey get for its $2 million per year investment in Ex-Congressman Livingston’s services?

A Joint Report by the Federation of American Scientists and the World Policy Institute found that the vast majority of U.S. arms transfers to Turkey were subsidized by U.S. taxpayers. In many cases, these taxpayer funds are supporting military production and employment in Turkey, not in the United States. Of the $10.5 billion in U.S. weaponry delivered to Turkey since 1984, $8 billion in all has been directly or indirectly financed by grants and subsidized loans provided by the U.S. government. Many of the largest deals - such as Lockheed Martin's sale of 240 F-16s to the Turkish air force and the FMC Corporation's provision of 1,698 armored vehicles to the Turkish army - involve co-production and offset provisions which steer investments, jobs, and production to Turkey as a condition of the sale. For example, Turkey's F-16 assembly plant in Ankara - a joint venture of Lockheed Martin and Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) - employs 2,000 production workers, almost entirely paid for with U.S. tax dollars.

Let’s recap the above data: Not only does our government, actually, our taxpayers, subsidize $8 billion of Turkey’s $10 billion weapons purchases; the production of this weaponry and the associated employment occurs not in the U.S., but overseas, in Turkey. We, the taxpayers, are subsidizing these purchases; our nation readily transfers its technology to a country that ranks high in global narcotics, terrorist and WMD related activities; while a select few MIC related firms such as Lockheed and the pimping middlemen, the lobbyists, get fatter and richer.

One Stop Shop: The Cohen Group

Like many other former statesmen, William Cohen, former Secretary of Defense, dived into the business of lobbying and consulting, and created his own Washington firm, The Cohen Group, which works for some of the largest companies in the defense industry, such as Lockheed Martin, and serves numerous foreign players. The Cohen Group is one of the primary and most active members of the American Turkish Council (ATC). Cohen’s client, Lockheed Martin, happens to be on the board of ATC, in addition to being listed as ATC’s top paying client.

The group claims on its Website that its principals have "a century and a half of combined experience in the Congress, the Defense Department, the State Department, the White House, and state and local governments" and that they “have developed extensive expertise and relationships with key international political, economic, and business leaders and acquired invaluable experiences with the individuals and institutions that affect our clients' success abroad.” Abroad indeed. With a few ‘dime a dozen generals’ and former statesmen, the firm owes its phenomenal speedy success to interests ‘abroad’ and of course, the MIC! Let’s look, with great amazement, I hope, at how this ingenious lobby venture serves as foreign agent for several influences without having to register as such; with complete immunity against any scrutiny.

According to Intelligence Online, in its March 27, 2006 issue, Cohen accompanied Bush on his trip to India and Pakistan in March 2006. The Cohen Group is very active in India; Joseph Ralston, Cohen’s Vice Chairman, led two delegations of U.S. Defense Chiefs to India the previous year. The trips were organized in conjunction with the U.S. India Business Council; among the participants were Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Boeing.

On June 9, 2006, Intelligence Online reports ‘already operating in India, the Cohen Group headed by William Cohen, has just opened an office in Beijing... Since 2003 the Cohen Group has equally been employing Christine Vick. She is a former Vice President of Kissinger Associates; the consultancy founded by former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and had been in charge of the firm’s Chinese business.’

Prior to the October 2005 release of Paul Volcker's report on violations of the United Nations' Iraq oil-for-food program, the Australian wheat exporter AWB Limited hired Cohen’s firm. AWB paid approximately $A300 million in trucking fees on its wheat contracts to a Jordanian company, Alia, which owns no trucks! The funds were funnelled to Saddam’s regime. AWB hired Cohen Group as part of its ‘strategy, ’ code-named ‘Project Rose’, to deal with the UN inquiry headed by Paul Volcker and corruption allegations made against it by U.S. wheat farmers and ‘hostile US politicians.’ Cohen Group is not a law firm; what kind of services and representation is it providing for this criminal case?

So who are the key players at Cohen’s lobby firm, giving it its value? Well of course, a handful of powerful formers; in addition to Cohen as the top principal we have former Undersecretary of State Mark Grossman, and two formerly high-level ‘dime a dozen generals:’ General Joseph Ralston and General Paul Kern;

The AWB scandal was a classic. On the Howard government's watch, we Aussies got neatly shafted by a bunch of Muslim con artists. Same thing happened years ago, under a Labor government - we got taken for a ride by some crooked middle eastern financier.

So, my own conclusion is that both sides of politics in Australia still haven't grasped that in dealing with Muslim regimes and entities one requires a long, loooong spoon, and a heavy dose of suspicion.

Not a comforting thought, seeing as we have rapidly sharia-ising Indonesia right on our back doorstep.

I would feel a whole lot safer if I knew that the Australian Ministers for Defence, Trade and Foreign Affairs, and Immigration, and their Shadows on the opposition bench, along with all our diplomatic reps to Muslim-majority countries,the top brass of our military and police, and the head of ASIO, had all read Spencer's books and were taking them seriously.

If America has been 'bought' as thoroughly as it appears, God alone only knows what has been happening here in Australia.

Apparently refusing to control the border, selling out to the Saudis, and purposefully obscuring the nature of Islam isn't enough for some of our "public servants". They have to engage in outright treason too.
