KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — An ethnic Chinese man received a Muslim burial after a court ruled against the wishes of most of his family members, who maintained Friday he never converted to Islam.An Islamic Shariah High Court in the central Negeri Sembilan state ruled Thursday that Gan Eng Gor, 74, also identified in court documents as Amir Gan Abdullah, was a Muslim and should be buried according to Islamic rites. The burial took place late Thursday.
The dispute was the latest in an increasing number of interfaith conflicts that have raised tensions in multiethnic Malaysia, where minority non-Muslims feel their religious rights are under threat. [...]
The dead man's body was seized by police after a complaint by his eldest son, Abdul Rahman Gan, a Muslim convert. He claimed his father had changed his religion from Buddhism to Islam last July.
The rest of the family claimed otherwise, and the case was sent to the Shariah High Court.
The court's judge, Mohamad Nadzri Abdul Rahman, told The Associated Press he ruled in favor of the eldest son because the father's wife and seven other children, who had disputed the conversion, were not in court Thursday and he couldn't hear their arguments.
Gan Hock Sin, one of the sons of the dead man, said the family didn't go to the Shariah court because they felt it was unfair that the case was heard there.
"It's not fair for us. I don't know how they say he converted. My father couldn't even talk (before his death)," Gan told the AP.
"Unfortunately we feel the way they do (these conversions) is not fair for non-Muslim people. The government should be more transparent," he said....
One hopes this representative act receives widespread coverage among the those called the Overseas Chinese, all over southeast Asia, and in Taiwan, and in China itself. And perhaps it will even make it into the Epoch Times, an English-language paper distributed in English, for free, in this country, backed -- I gather from reading between its lines -- either by Taiwanese or even more likely Falun-Gong money.

Would it have mattered if the wife and children were in the courtroom? As I understand it, in a Sharia court non-Muslims can't testify because the Koran says unbelievers are liars.
To enlarge the scope, has any Sharia court anywhere ruled in favor of the non-Muslim when adjudicating a dispute between a Muslim and a non-Muslim?

If the deceased had property, the property can only be inherited by Muslims irregardless of any will written by the deceased, which makes the son who became a Muslim the sole heir to all the property/estate of the deceased. Something smells more than the dead here.

So eldest son having converted to Islam (under what circumstances, I wonder?) will get to inherit ALL his father's property, leaving mum and siblings out in the cold.
(What an incentive to convert to Islam. Be the first convert in your family; then as soon as some rich non-Muslim relative dies, declare [falsely] that said relative had converted, hurrah! and the Muslim authorities will back you up and what's more, decree that *you* and you alone, as the only other good Muslim in the family, must inherit ALL of said relative's property, cutting out all the other potential heirs. I wonder how many times some amoral person has been added to the Ummah by working on this sort of calculus?).
And as I understand from reading Bat Yeor on dhimmitude, had the wife and seven siblings turned up in that sharia court, the testimony of the Muslim son would have trumped anything and everything they said. Because all kafir are liars by definition and all Muslims always tell the truth...

Is anyone keeping track of precisely how many of these 'your dear departed wife/ husband/ son/daughter/ etc. was really a Muslim, surprise!' incidents have taken place in Malaysia (or anywhere else - e.g. Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, 'Palestine') in, say, the past three years? And, in each case, what has happened to the property of deceased?
Where is the film-maker who will lay bare this ugly trick?

....probably not...besides why would you dare to go...The Muslims have been attacking funeral processions and people at grave sites lately....probably seeking new converts....
Not sure the real reason behind the son's conversion but it's common knowledge in Malaysia that non-Muslims working in government departments or government linked companies have no chance of promotion above a certain level. Many non-Muslims have stated that they were told by their bosses that they only way to go up would be to convert. If he converted due to economic reasons, then surely saying that his father converted for his own personal gains would not be below him.
