Anti-dhimmitude -- and a rare step for Ebadi in protesting against something that is specifically prescribed by the Qur'an. An update on this story. "Ebadi protests amputation punishment in Iran," from AFP (thanks to Morgaan Sinclair):
TEHRAN (AFP) — Nobel peace prize winner Shirin Ebadi's rights group on Wednesday protested against the amputation of hands and feet as a punishment in Iran, warning of "new dimensions" in rights violations."Unfortunately, the violation of human rights in Iran has not only been expanded in some fields, it has also found new dimensions," the group of human rights lawyers led by Ebadi said in a statement.
"In the past days, several criminals in the province of Sistan-Baluchestan were sentenced to the amputation of hands and legs for actions against security," it said. "And the verdict has also been carried out."
Iran amputated the right hand and left foot of five criminals convicted of armed robbery and hostage-taking in the southeastern city of Zahedan, capital of the restive Sistan-Baluchestan province, the ISNA news agency reported Sunday.
"Punishments including flogging, amputation of fingers, hands and legs, stoning and execution existing in the penal laws contradict international human rights principles," the group said.
Iran's judiciary is allowed to employ such punishments under Islamic Sharia law.
Even though amputation, flogging and stoning are rare in Iran, reports show that they are still used by the conservative judicial system especially at a local level....
WTF is this person?

"She presented a book entitled, 'Democracy, human rights, and Islam in modern Iran: Psychological, social and cultural perspectives' (2003,Bergen: Fagbokforlaget), to the Nobel Committee. The volume documents the historical and cultural basis of democracy and human rights from Cyrus and Darius..."
historical and cultural basis of democracy and human rights from Cyrus and Darius...
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
No, seriously,
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA
--------------------------
Cyrus and Darius are the archtypes for "barbarian tyrant."
Sa'id Raja'i-Khorassani, the Permanent Delegate to the United Nations from the Islamic Republic of Iran, declared, according to Amir Taheri, that "the very concept of human rights was 'a Judeo-Christian invention' and inadmissible in Islam. . . . According to Ayatollah Khomeini, one of the Shah's 'most despicable sins' was the fact that Iran was one of the original group of nations that drafted and approved the Universal Declaration of Human Rights."
Allowed by whom? What does this statement mean? The Iranians can employ whatever punishments they want within their country, unless and until some outside force comes in and forcibly stops them. Is this some reference to "International Law" or some such nonsense? Or a reference to the fact that human rights groups overlook these punishements in the name of "religious tolerance"?
A better way to put this, possibly, is to say "Iran employs such punishments in accordance with Islamic sharia law", or "Iran uses mainstream, core Islamic beliefs to justify these punishments".
As a Muslim living in Iran, Ebadi is putting her life on the line. She is a brave person to criticise Islamic jurisprudence and risk being labeled an "apostate".
It would be interesting to hear her answers to that Rand Corp. survey.
""Punishments including flogging, amputation of fingers, hands and legs, stoning and execution existing in the penal laws contradict international human rights principles," the group said."
....hmmmmm, armed robbery and kidnapping would probably get you 10-20 years in prision in America....and very few people have accused Iran of honoring international human rights or even the rights of the Iranian people (not that the Iranian government gives its people any rights)....
This punishment (amputation of the opposite hand and foot) is described in the Qur'an.
Are we engaging in more "misunderstanding" of Islam?
Is there anyone willing to push the delete key for this particular sura?
There are a whole bunch that the Qur'an could do without.
Islamic rage boy obviously believes in aconservative judicial system especially at a local level
