Taking him seriously would require us to take action to counter his threat. It's much easier to dismiss him as a madman and his words as bluster, or insist to ourselves that his comments were meant solely for "internal consumption".

The Iranian's and their allies are cunning. With the occupation of North Sinai, they have accomplished many objectives:
1. Have the other major oil route, i.e., Suez Canal, within reach. They don't have to take control of the Canal but only disrupt operations like their capable of doing with the Hormuz.
2. Have a "temporary" airbase in N Sinai for Iranian planes.
3. Establish a regular flight route from Iran to N. Sinai that is ver close to Israel borders. The Israeli military will have to accept these regular flights for "humanitarian" reasons because the plane manifest will list food and medicine.
Who knows? Maybe someday they'll pack a few "humanitarian" planes full of conventional explosives or nuclear waste and hit southern targets in Israel by shifting course a little.
4. Further surround Israel for the time when the noose around Israel's neck will be pulled.

3. Proxy Hamas in North Sinai/Gaza.

They are taking him seriously. They know Iran and all Islamic ME countries want to wipe out Israel,of course they know this. (They being the polical masters of the west).

Maybe the Washington calculation is that if there is going to be a global recession (which Washington doesn't want but is going to get anyway) then the global economy won't need as much oil during the recessionary period.
Taking Iran oil off the market, i.e., with an attack, during this period won't be felt as much. China won't need as much oil during the recession (the principal importer of oil from Iran). So they can tap other sources.
Don't worry they take him seriously, in exactly the same way they took Syria seriously on September 5th last year. Reading between the lines Syria was planing a surprise for Israel with a surprise rocket attack. We don't know what that surprise entailed whether it was Atomic, Bacteriological or Chemical. The Syrians got a bloody nose and were humiliated. You can be certain that America and Israel are planning ways to neutralize Iran's nuclear arsenal when and if it becomes operational. Israel is spending some serious money on updating their Arrow ballistic defense rocket batteries. You can bet your life if Iran tries anything they will regret it, and they will regret it even more if they do fire a ballistic missile at Israel with an Atomic warhead they will regret it even more whether it is shot down or not. It wont matter a dam how much America pulls on Israel's chain. Israel will be entitled under the right of Self Defense under the U.N. Charter to retaliate and they will use that right. You don't buy three super subs from Germany with enlarged torpedo tubes capable of firing their Popeye cruise missile. Which the Israelis have certainly fitted with Atomic warheads.
