I thought it was spot on, too, and had to check it twice.

My initial reaction? - Lost Souls. Lost Souls.

Big gap in the story: where they went to school, where they went to high school, how they did. I'd have liked to hear more about what their brothers and sisters think. Surely the ABC could have tracked down an old schoolmate or two, as well.

I wonder if this program will flush out anyone who remembers Hutchensen from her hippy days?

Nothing much about where they picked up salable work skills, if any. I don't recall hearing for example, where 'Rabiah' picked up nursing skills/ midwifery, since she was claiming she ran a clinic in Afghanistan and delivered babies. (And did you hear the pure BS about the plans for the wonderful 'hospital for women' that the Taliban planned to set up in Afghanistan?)

I'll have to watch the recording and see if I can work anything out.

(If the program makers had had any brains they might have asked Rabiah some questions about how old the birthing mothers were...12? 13? 14? We know for a fact that most girls in rural Afghanistan, where Rabiah was swanning around, are married off at 9 or 10 or 12 and are bred right away.

Likewise: one of them has a taste for Somali men. I can't recall if she has a daughter. If she does, someone should have asked her point blank - is your daughter genitally mutilated? She wants to go to Afghanistan, or Somalia, to experience 'pure' Islam. Yeah - maybe she gets off on public stonings and floggings and headchoppings. My husband's reaction? - he doesn't think they have any real grounds for complaint against the ABC. He thought it was a reasonably sympathetic presentation, all things considered, and that they were able to speak freely and at length.

WTF moment - when one of them was whingeing about how non-Muslim Aussies, when they saw her in the street, would tell her to 'go back where she came from' (i.e. people were assuming she was a foreign Muslim). I thought to myself - you nitwit, if you weren't wearing that stupid mask on your face and that big black bag [she wears full niqab, just the eye slits] people would be able to SEE that you were a blonde freckly-faced blue-eyed Anglo-Scot Aussie! Set people up to draw certain conclusions and then get all pzzed off when they do exactly that? No, Rabid, you don't get any sympathy from *me*.

You know who I think the ABC should have hired to interview those two females? A certain cheerful besuited slightly portly bearded gentleman that we all know, who knows the Quran, Hadith and Sira back to front, and Arabic to boot.

They could have cut out all the silly dramatisations and home movie style clips, which just used up space and didn't explain anything.

I'd have preferred straight talking heads. A loungeroom, a tray of coffee, the camera crew, sound crew, Rabiah, Raisa and...Robert. Quran, Hadith and Sira, Arabic and translations, Reliance of the Traveller, Ibn Kathir, Ibn Khaldun, right there on the shelf, ready to be consulted.

Now THAT would have been gripping television.

Alternatively, the ABC could have hired Phyllis Chesler to conduct the interview. Female; once married to a Muslim; lived in Afghanistan; trained psychologist; a mind like a razor.

Yes I agree , this has less to do about Islam and more about damaged rudderless people who seek order in their lives by outsourcing their own agency. I watched it as well last night , well bits- as I do have a life ( yes I am aware of the irony of me saying this while I am placing comment on this site).

After the ex-hippie divorced first Africa Muslim husband an before she married second African husband as a second wife.She had this bonding with 5 other woman converts where she stayed - her mother commented on the fact that all of these women had major personnal trauma in their lives. You sense that her mother was alluding to missing untold traumatic episode with Rabiah. One suspects that Islam gave her a place to avoid intimacy , her husbands selected for her , the marriage and her place in it well defined. After 5 husbands it seems like she is continuing the journey she started with her becoming a 'Hippie' , only by other means.

When one of the 'Shelias' praises Osama for following the "correct" and "undiluted" version of Islam but insists the only thing she and Osama have in common is being a Muslim ..you are left thinking is she being coy or just dumb.

One of the 'Shelias' tell of people coming up to her ,(she's dressed in the Burqa) and saying to her " you must be hot in there luv" she thinks , 'but its hotter in hell'....probably gleefully imagining the ghastly fate of those who dont subscribe to the religion of peace and wear the all covering uniform. As a counterpoint , I saw a doco on Yusuf Islam AKA Cat Stevens recently , he was much more articulate , thoughtful , at peace , soulful...rational! He made you want to get a Koran and give it a read and change your life!

I highly recommend watching this, as there is some confusion amongst the commenters here. I think the similarity between the names 'Raisa' and 'Rabia' is the cause for that.

eg. Raisa is the one who has a tendency to marry african muslims. She's got 8 children to 5 different husbands. I guess we could call her a serial monogamist.

It should turn up on the net eventually. Also: ABC TV tends to post full transcripts of major programs, so just keep checking their website. Unless you're a professional face/ body language reader and want to check out how the women's expression (if visible) relates to what they're saying, you won't miss much by relying on the transcript. The segments of the women talking were fine but there were a lot of purely visual sequences that were staged 'dramatisations' of this or that part of the story. Distracting, time-wasting and uninformative.

What I'm waiting for is the fallout as the ordinary punters, having viewed the thing itself rather than the advance reviews, start discussing it.

As I said above, I just wish the ABC had had the wit to put these two women in the same room as either Phyllis Chesler or Robert Spencer, both of whom would have asked them *much* more interesting questions!

I might email Chesler anyway and ask her if anyone's sent her a copy for viewing. I'd *love* to hear her professional 'reading' of Rabiah and Raisah, since - besides her own personal experience as wife of a Muslim man in Afghanistan - she is a trained psychologist specialising in work with abused women and children.
