"Costa Rica hoped to encourage peace talks on Feb. 5 when it recognized a Palestinian state - a key demand on the part of the Palestinians."
Sure. Just give them everything they want and maybe there will be peace. To recognize a "state" that has not renounced territorial claims on the rest of Israel, and cannot or simply will not control its militias or those of other groups is to start down a slippery slope, with no assurance, and no reasonable expectation given the track record, of a lasting peace. And while one Central American country's recognition may not amount to much by itself, it does set an undesirable precedent.
From the Associated Press:
Israel has postponed a planned meeting with Costa Rican officials over the Central American nation's decision to formally recognize a Palestinian state.
The meeting between President Oscar Arias and an Israeli diplomat, scheduled for Wednesday, "was postponed, but we are looking to reschedule," Costa Rican Foreign Minister Bruno Stagno said Monday.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Arye Mekel said Israel had summoned the Costa Rican charge d'affaires and instructed its ambassador to convey a message to San Jose.
"We would like to express our disappointment over this regretful decision of the government of Costa Rica to establish full diplomatic relations with the 'state of Palestine,' " Mekel said. "This act of Costa Rica totally contradicts the traditional friendship that characterized its relations with Israel since its establishment."
Stagno has said Costa Rica hoped to encourage peace talks on Feb. 5 when it recognized a Palestinian state - a key demand on the part of the Palestinians.
"We thought it was necessary to send a message to both sides about the need to sit down and negotiate on the key issues in the conflict," he said then.
In August 2006, Arias' administration announced that Costa Rica would move its embassy to Tel Aviv from the hotly disputed city of Jerusalem.
Israel claims all of Jerusalem as its capital, but most nations don't formally recognize that claim. Post-1982 Costa Rica and El Salvador had been the only two countries with embassies there until announcing in the same month that they would relocate.
I would love to know how Costa Rica can recognize Palestine, a country that does not exist except in the minds of the Arab refugees. That had been kept squatting in refugee camps by their Muslim brethren
They were probably afraid of being suicide bombed.
Where the f;;; is Costra Rica anyway ?
Doglover got it right
I smell Sowdi petro-dollars...
"...establish full diplomatic relations with the 'state of Palestine...'"
I hope this guy realises that they'll be establishing relations with a group of murderers.
Nice. You know humanity has taken a step for better when things like this happen.
Costa Rica isn't aware of history. Granting the "Palestinians" statehood recognition hasn't help them become any more giving to their own people or prevent them from sending their own children as suicide bombers to blow up Israelis.
"We thought it was necessary to send a message to both sides about the need to sit down and negotiate on the key issues in the conflict," he said then.

Both sides? The only side who's been doing any negotiations or anything else is Israel.
So let's see: the Jews have been kicked around by the Muslims for 13 centuries, and they finally throw off their chains and come back to their land. They're STILL being kicked around by the Muslims.
So tell me, who is it who is holding up the negotiations?
The Palestinians could go a long way by offering an apology to Israel.
Person of the book,
I would like to see any Muslim kick around an Israeli !
I know who I would put money on.
Costa Rica has always been well-disposed toward Israel, and its press --at least the press I read 20 years ago -- included well-known columnists acutely aware, not so much of Islam, but of the horrifically unfair presentation by much of the world, of the Arab war on Israel. The once-celebrated narrative of Jose Figueres, the one in which he arrives as a poor student, engages in menial labor so as to attend college, and learns about liberty by reading the works of Jeffreson and Lincoln, the Monteverde Cloud Forest and eco-tourism, the absence of an army in a region used to strutting colonels of right and left, always on the verge of a coup or counter-coup -- all this was of a piece with Costa Rica's intelligent political stance in its refusal to abandon Israel, and its bravery in, for a while, maintaingin its embassy in Jerusalem (for note that the move described above is out of Jerusalem).
Perhaps someone in the Costa Rican government was persuaded to move the Embassy, and what is much worse, to reify ("in the interests of peace" of course) this "Palestine" which is not meant by Arabs to exist permanently side-by-side peacefully with, but to be an eventual substitute for, the existing state of Israel, through the offers that the Arabs have traditionally used, with such success, as when in sub-Saharan Africa they persuaded Africans, who had enjoyed such good relations with Israel and had benefitted from intelligently-conceived Israeli aid programs, to break relations with Israel, or in the capitals of the Western world, where Arab money pays, directly or indirectly, for small armies of Western hirelings (see Raymond Close, see John Esposito, see Fred Dutton, see all kinds of former ambassadors to the Arab countries), who not only undercut Israel at every turn, but have also prevented, for decades, a clear understanding of Islam that might have enabled the American government to avoid the squandering and waste in Iraq, and also, several decades ago, to have come up with an energy policy a bit more realistic than relying on "our staunch ally Saudi Arabia" to "moderate" oil prices.
The bold act by Costa Rica in moving its Embassy to Jerusalem ought to have been applauded and emulated by other Western governments. Instead, they cravenly did nothing, and it would be unfair, I suppose, to criticize Costa Rica for no longer being braver than the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and all the Western government that should have firmly demonstrated that they recognized that Jerusalem was the historic capital of the Jews, that its religions freedom for all had been scrupulously observed only under Israeli rule, never under Arab or other Muslim rule, and that they were no longer prepared to hel the Arabs to delegitimize or undercut Israel's legal, historic, and moral claims to that city, claims which are intimately tied up with, though few seem to realize it, the survival of Christians as non-dhimmis in that city, and hence with the health, and even survival, not only of Israel, the main victim of the Lesser Jihad in that sliver of western Asia on the Mediterranean, but also of the faith that helped in significant part to form the West, and which, if that West were properly understood by its own inhabitants, is threatened along with Israel by that denying of Israel's overwhelming claim to Jerusalem, the only claim that guarantees the continued Western presence, other than that of submissive islamochristians eager to curry favor with Muslim overlords, in Jerusalem and hence in the Holy Land.

I doubt you'll see it. Muslims are cowards when it comes to jihad. They prefer to attack women and children, and old men in wheel chairs. And they launch attacks from hospitals and schools -- i.e. they hide behind their mother's skirts.
Israel, on the other hand, is made up largely of people who suffered in dhimmitude for 13 centuries, and who threw off their chains and founded a country. They're not about to back down again in the face of the cowardly and despicable Muslims.
I'm sure that most Israeli *women* could beat any Muslim in a straight-up fight.
God Bless Costa Rica.
It is time for these Israeli's to dismantle their wall; retreat back to the borders which were illegally given them in the first place; knock down all their settlements, stop saying 'we killed Jesus and we're proud of it'; stop their racist immigration policy; stop their cowardly attacks on civilians and call it self-defence and then apologise for decades of war crimes and genocide against the Palestinians.
Till then I don't recognise them as anything
other than a terrorist state. The same thing you accuse the Palestinians of.
Muslims attack woman and children is it? All I see is dead Palestinian woman and children at the hands of a country, which has high-tech weaponry but would much rather use 'precision' guided bombs. Whose the coward?
Why not go on the ground with your soldiers and get these people your looking for, if you are nothing other than cowards?
I doubt they will want to go back into Southern Lebanon anytime soon.
"thesaracen"
You are an idiot. War crimes and genocide is a preposterous claim to make. Israel has killed fewer Palestinians and Arabs in 60 years than Syria killed in one day at Hama in the 1980s. But of course you won't accuse Syria of war crimes will you?
Israel's actions have been in defense against an enemy that would love to push her into the Mediterranean. This is as clear as daylight once you read the Arabs media and watch their television. Have you done this?
The IDF also does go on the ground when fighting Palestinian terrorists. It is one of their ways to fight terrorists who hide amongst the civilian population, which is a war crime. In other instances, they use sophisticated technology to explicitly kill terrorist leaders who are thoroughly embedded amidst a civilian population as this is easier and will produce fewer civilian casualties.
By the way, the Jews have never said that they killed Jesus and are proud of it. This is nothing more than hate and fantasies spewing out of your mouth. Clearly you haven't read Jewish history or mixed with Jewish people. Judging by your comment, you seriously have a lot of things to learn.
Also, Israel doesn't have a racist immigration policy. People of all religions and races live in Israel. That is why you can find a European Jew and an African Jew there. Different races living in the same country. There are also Christians, Muslims and other religious minorities that live there. Get with the program and perhaps take a trip to Israel: you'll be surprised to see how wrong your hate-filled assumptions are.
Little does Costa Rica realize that the Palestinian 'state' it's officially recognizing would blow their country to smithereens in a nanosecond regardless of the goodwill gesture!
Expressing goodwill gestures towards Muslims by any "unbeliever" does not result in ANY slack in the brutality Islam wages against all "unbelievers." Or, put another way: when an "unbeliever" does a good deed for Muslims, as far as Islam is concerned the "unbeliever" may as well have not bothered with the good deed because the "unbeliever" is STILL an "unbeliever" in the eyes of Islam and is still programmed to be rubbed out!
A lesson to be learned in "The TWILIGHT ZONE."
the saracen:
Too bad the Palestinian Authority continues to knowingly use "Palestinians" as human shields in violation of the Geneva Convention while the world turns a blind anti-Semitic eye.
You still haven't shown any legitimacy to Islamic claims to Jewish territory. I see a formula here: just invade, squat on someone else'e territory, fire away with on the unbelievers, use your Muslim squatters as human shields, pay off some crooks at the UN and viola!
It's the same thing going in Chechnya, Lebanon, Kosovo, the Philippines, southern Thailand, Sudan, etc. Everybody is stealing Islamic territory and has to be killed... ad nauseum.
But is there ever any valid reason to to recognize Islam or any Islamic state? Like all good serial killers, Islam will continue to kill and kill and kill with or without any official "recognition."
Without recognition is better I think. Serial killers do not deserve any.
pythagoras- Your history is full of the words kill, kill, kill, without reason. No valid reason to recognise you is there?
