I think I am a pretty average american, I believe in live and let live, I tend to think that pretty much everyone in the world has a lot in common.
Where I have my doubts about Islam is that they tend to think that the world is divided between Islamics and everyone else. Which I am sure that especially in majority mahomed countries each one of them would have some mahomed neighbor that they detest. IOW in reality every mahomedan would have some other mahomedans that they do not like.
It looks like to me that many of the things that they do are opposite of what I learned about in Sunday school, turn the other cheek, do good even to your enemies, in that case the mahomets are more like the atheist than an "abrahamic religion".
But being a man, I do appreciate the masculine nature of Islam, though being a Christian I can recognize that nature as fallen into sin, multiple wives, warfare as a religious duty, the importance of "honor".
If Islam is important to those who say they practice it, it is about time that they seperate themselves from being mindless drones of their clergy and if they cannot reconcile the religion to what they know is right opt for another religion that is more in line with morality and truth, wether that is the flying spaghetti monster or druidism, or something else. But to insist that people that have already rejected Islam as being less than ideal to not voice why they reject Islam and its prophet is if not the heighth of arrogance, somewhere near the acme of arrogance.
Mr. Muhammad Djabir, and the rest of the Islamic world, deserves an answer, and every media outlet in the Western world shoud be courageous enough to give it to him.
All newspapers, TV news programs and magazines should begin by printing and airing the Mohammad cartoons, prominently -- all on the same day.

I live not far from Surabaya, and these demos have been going on for a fews days now, so here is a little insight as to how really screwed up these morons are.
There was a time when I drove from where I live to Surabaya. In the good old days BC (Before Crisis) the trip took about 90 minutes using a toll road that goes about one third of the way.
Now up to five hours can be the norm.

I would never in a million years have dreamed of insulting Islam...just as I never insult Buddhism, Hinduism, Mormonism and all the rest...except that the Islamists themselves have no qualms about insulting everyone and everything else in the known world. Respect and tolerance goes both ways. Islamists will get as good (or bad) as they give. It's that simple. It's that whole "glass houses and stones" thing. They can't seem to grasp this. Basically, Congress needs to pass a law requiring that all cars sold in America be flex fuel cars; and then give tax incentives on alternative fuels.
These two steps would cause car makers all over the world to make their cars use flex fuel, and then make flex fuel viable.
This would cause the world to shift to fuels other than petroleum, which would greatly reduce the stranglehold that the muslims have over the rest of the world.

Indonesia is an interesting place. I spent the better part of 10 years there off and on - mostly in South Sulawesi. While there are some areas with very radicalized folks, the vast majority of the 80% muslim population (180 million plus) are fairly nominal - much like a lot of Christians in the US.
Still, a lot has changed since '98 when Suharto was forced out and the current administration is walking a fine line trying to maintain it's national secular government. It's certainly better for all if it can maintain it, but if it starts radicalizing or the military starts taking sides again, it'll be like Aceh, Irian Jaya and East Timor on a grand scale.
